Crean will not be fired before the end of the year unless they line up a successor. This would allow recruits to follow Crean or the new coach here. Not sure that's going to happen

+1.  It's simple:  if we make the tourney and there are no more off-court incidents, then I strongly suspect he'll be back.

To stay in Bloomington, I don't think Crean has to do anything.  Unless exile is still a state sanctioned punishment.  Any legal experts out there want to clarify whether we still exile people?

I think Coach has lost a lot of support over the last year. Some of it amongst us fans (I was a supporter last year at this point) and some amongst the trustees but more importantly some with the donors.

Many if those who supported are not necessarily adamantly against him but we have jumped off the bandwagon and are considering things closely. I think the group who have jumped can be won back but it goes beyond a winning season this year.

It starts with on court performance though. I thought prior to the Davis injury that we should end the year in the top 25 (20-25 range). I think it is very important that this team be playing very well by the end of the year (a lot of talented youth that will get better as they play). This is step 1. Without this we are coach shopping.

Then comes the tournaments. We must not only make it into the tourney but play well there. What does that mean. The year we played UK and lost is a good comparison. We played well at the end of the year and represented well in the NCAA. We also should do well in the BT tourney. In both tourneys we really need to play above our seeding. Yep that is tough but things are sort of stacked against Coach and he needs to exceed in the tournaments to help knock those things down.

Still it does not stop there. We need to see that we have very strong talent coming back and we need a balanced and talented group of high end kids to Commit. Not be high on Indiana but to commit. The future needs to be exciting not questionable.

I think things are stacked against coach and there are possibly some trustees thinking a change is imminent. Because of that, I think the above list, though challenging, is where we need to find ourselves in April.

I did not mention off court issues. Those obviously need to end as well.

Some of you guys are surprising me with how much of a chance you think he has. IMO, it's just about guaranteed that this will be his last year at IU. People have been underselling this team and think that making the tournament would be nice....This team has a ton of talent and making the tournament should be the bare minimum of expectations. Crean making the tournament this year isn't a sigh of relief, and thinking that is an actual accomplishment speaks to how little this fanbase thinks of his coaching ability. This team has the backcourt talent to make a serious run if they click. Anything short of a suprise NCAAT run (beyond the SW16) and we have a new coach next year. And that's not even factoring in any additional off the court issues that hopefully don't arise.

I said before the season the only way he will get any faith back from me is go to the Elite 8 at minimum.  Now he has to be tougher on these players, the slap on the wrist he gave them is a friggin' joke; he has to actually hold them accountable instead of just saying don't do it again.

It shouldn't just for making the tournament.  That should be an absolute bare minimum expectation no exceptions.

We're not talk about what he has to do to earn back our trust, we're talk about what he has to do to keep his job. I don't think the likelihood of him being fired is that high if there aren't any more issues and the team gets to the tournament.

The absolute bare minimum is IU must make the tourney with 2 McDonald AA's in the backcourt.

I can safely say that no search or successor is happening or being lines up. That I know. I thought they would be using this season to set that up but they are not. I was told that as long as glass is supporting crean, there is no search behind the scenes etc

Off the court:  there can be no more lapses.  I think one more incident seals his fate.  

 

On the court:  I don't think we can just base it on if we make the NCAA tournament.  If we start like a house of fire and then trail off and slide into the tourney a la Wake Forest a few years ago, that probably won't cut it.  If we start slow, then come on strong and get in with a record that might not look as pretty....?????  At that point it might be about what we are looking like for the next year.  IF (capitals on purpose) we land Bryant, Zimmereman, or a reclassified Thon, he isn't going anywhere under the second scenario I listed.  

 

In all reality, I have no idea what he needs to do or even if he can do it.  However, in spite of all the concerns I have, I like the guy and I am going to pull like heck for him to figure it out.
