Might be difficult, but he wins. Wouldn't be surprised if Illinois still finishes Top 5 in the B1G next season... And still be a 7 seed or less. Big Ten is going to be down..

He doesn’t always win all that much

He didn't his first two seasons at Illinois.

But he was pretty good at SFA going 89-14 over 3 seasons.

20-13 his single season at Oklahoma State.

At Illinois...

14-18

12-21

21-10(was told they'd continue sucking and Ayo Dosunmu wasn't that good)

24-7

23-10

20-13

29-9 and finally made the Elite 8.

So his first three years at Illinois were significantly worse than Mike Woodson’s first three seasons at IU. The jury is out to see if Woodson can get to 24 wins in year four.

And you’re OK with that and think Underwood is a good coach.

Got it.

Well I'm sure his first 2 seasons would have been different with the transfer portal and NIL. It's a whole new world now.

Very true!

But a coach is judged ultimately on results. And those results are dependent on the national rules/situation that the coach is placed into. Illinois is certainly not hurting for NIL $$. Woody also has been good at player retention, which works in any era.

Makes me wonder what Crean could have done with NIL and the portal to help that Zeller team or how things would have changed. We did have a couple transfers help that 2016 team. Maybe we could have gotten Zeller to stay another year. Maybe could have gotten Troy Williams to stay another year.

Either way, Underwood was on a good trajectory for Illinois. Took 3 years to get the tourney and that isn't bad.

Maybe Crean could have hired someone to help him figure out a zone defense.

A lot of people should have hired someone that year to figure out that zone defense.  They had a top 6 defense with that particular 2/3 zone

This might be more football but I imagine it would affect basketball as well. Looks like big changes will probably continue coming in college sports, though many of these have already been predicted.

That and Hulls’ shoulder was basically separated, he couldn’t shoot to spread the zone and Cody was unable to capitalize in the middle of the zone. People ignore all of that when just criticizing Crean in that game, Cuse had a heck of a team too.

I count 7 guys in that game that at least had a cup of coffee in the NBA and 4 of them played for Syracuse. Crazy amount of talent on the floor that night.

i remember when Purdue fans used to make fun of Crean for over signing.

painter oversigned this year by four players and even with Edey going pro and Morton and Gillis going into the portal, he is over the allotment by 1….which means he’ll have to ‘persuade’ an incoming freshman to go the prep school route or force someone to give up their scholly.  So someone is getting Paintered.

True but yet many continue to act as though we lost to UE that night.
The tall Cuse guards shut down smaller guards all year and we featured 5’11”/6’0 Yogi and injured shoulder Hulls who combined for a total of 0-8 from the field.  And in the following game Syracuse held 3 seed Marquette to 39 points. They were on a roll.
Yes, Crean was not good (sucked) vs zones but it was a terrible match-up which is one of the challenges of the tourney.

Don't know how important the conference tourneys were in 2013 compared to now with the NET and other metrics; if it was important the real issue was crapping the bed in the BTT and letting Uof6 into the Indy regional and having to go east and play Cuse in the Sweet 16 to begin with.

Yep that was the killer not getting the path through Indy.  To make it worse Cuse was up big on Louisville in the Big east championship game only to get completely destroyed in the second half.  Louisville loses that one and IU is probably playing in Indy.     People also forget IUs stretch at the end of the year moved them all the way down to the 3rd overall 1 seed where most of the year they were projected as the top 1 seed
