I think this is one that the NCAA can actually win. Typically when they've lost, it's been because they were trying to restrict students who happened to be athletes (which is and has been the NCAA's view for a long time) from having the same rights as students who aren't athletes. Basically, by not wanting to make athletes employees, the NCAA and the schools created this situation.

However, I don't think another year of eligibility because of not playing falls into that category.

I guess it would really depend on how the NCAA worded it when they gave players another year of eligibility.

I like Ant a lot. He may even be right. But, man, there are so many pieces to incorporate and get acquainted here that in November they may look like the ‘76 team some moments and the ‘09 team other moments in the same games. This will be an undeniably interesting season.

Agree. That’s the danger of the portal, I guess. But we have all season to sort it out. I’ll say, one thing I’ll give Woody credit for is he seems to generally have brought in solid dudes who like to compete. Even Ware really had very little issues in that regard.

Here's what he said.

I didn’t see his follow up post. The first one made it sound like he thought top 5 or pretty close to it.

He’s historically defended Woody too—and he was defending him in the comments to that first tweet—so it’s not like he’s throwing that out to place unrealistic expectations on him.

Ahhh ... never mind.

Fair point, but even by portal standards this is gonna be pretty fluid. Would think the 2 big things early will be how long does it take Rice to figure where to get the ball to guys and where not to and do they communicate defensively well enough not to put Ballo in foul trouble every game.

I have no problem with Ant's posts... and he keeps receipts and has been right A LOT. He's a good follow.

Illinois says "hold my beer."

Their current starting lineup:

  • Ty Rodgers,
  • Carey Booth,
  • Tre White,
  • Kylan Boswell,
  • Drayvn Gibbs-Langhorn.

Very true. And even with the respect I have for Underwood there is no universe where I’m giving my team to Gibbs-Lawhorn. No, no, no, no, no.

Underwood gets a ton of love, but he took over an arguably similar situation to that of Woody, and did far, far, FAR worse than Woody did in his first three years. Only when he added 5* Kofi Cockburn to Trent Frazier and Ayo Dosunmu (whom he already was losing with) did he get to a 21-10 record. Had a couple of good years with Kofi and then fell off to 20-13, 11-9 last year before having another good year this past year.

In seven years at Illinois he has had exactly one player stay for four years.

I see how his teams are effective, but I guess I'm not a fan of Illinois under Underwood being some "successful without any discussion" program.

Would it help if I told you that the entire rest of their roster is: 4* freshman PF Morez Johnson, 2* freshman C Jason Jakstys, and portalist SF Jake Davis, who averaged 9ppg at Mercer?

There is time, but those eight are their entire current roster. Dainja, Harris, Moretti, Hansberry, and Goode walked away. Lots of kids leave Illinois who would have had significant roles if they stayed, because Underwood just may be, ahem ... "difficult."

Might be difficult, but he wins. Wouldn't be surprised if Illinois still finishes Top 5 in the B1G next season... And still be a 7 seed or less. Big Ten is going to be down..

He didn't his first two seasons at Illinois.

But he was pretty good at SFA going 89-14 over 3 seasons.

20-13 his single season at Oklahoma State.

At Illinois...

14-18

12-21

21-10(was told they'd continue sucking and Ayo Dosunmu wasn't that good)

24-7

23-10

20-13

29-9 and finally made the Elite 8.

So his first three years at Illinois were significantly worse than Mike Woodson’s first three seasons at IU. The jury is out to see if Woodson can get to 24 wins in year four.

And you’re OK with that and think Underwood is a good coach.

Got it.

Well I'm sure his first 2 seasons would have been different with the transfer portal and NIL. It's a whole new world now.

Very true!

But a coach is judged ultimately on results. And those results are dependent on the national rules/situation that the coach is placed into. Illinois is certainly not hurting for NIL $$. Woody also has been good at player retention, which works in any era.

Makes me wonder what Crean could have done with NIL and the portal to help that Zeller team or how things would have changed. We did have a couple transfers help that 2016 team. Maybe we could have gotten Zeller to stay another year. Maybe could have gotten Troy Williams to stay another year.

Either way, Underwood was on a good trajectory for Illinois. Took 3 years to get the tourney and that isn't bad.

Maybe Crean could have hired someone to help him figure out a zone defense.
