I was watching the game and got a call with Indiana State up 77-70.  Mid call I looked and saw that Seton Hall had won 79-77.  Worse was that I couldn't even rewind on youtube tv because it had switched to the slam dunk program.

What happened??

Dawes hit a couple of threes and ISU missed a couple of wide open threes, Davis went to the basket strong to give them the lead!

Around 2:57 to go in the game it was 77-70.  Indiana State had just made back to back 3 balls.
Seton Hall called T.O.  Coach Swertz should have had team to milk clock and go to the bucket for layup or kick out for 3 ball.  Instead Indiana State simply came down and shot 3 ball way to early in shot clock and did not score and was out scored 9-0 to end the game.

Both respectable coaches.

That 3 attempt up 77-70 with 16 left on the shot clock turned the tide. Not saying they couldnt or shouldn’t have overcame it, but I had the feeling as soon as he clanked it, it might go that way as the basketball gods punishing a low IQ play.

Great run by a fun team. Shame they didn’t finish. But respect either way.

Can't really change who you are with 2min in the season left. Space and open 3's drive those offenses and the analytics don't really tell you to pass up open 3's from good shooters.  They were basically the same shots that put them up 7 with 3 to go.

That's not to say I disagree with you guys.  My previous post made that clear I hope. But all those shot charts of Alabama that show literally only 3's and layups attempted don't happen by accident.  It's what the players are taught to hunt all season.

Great game. Sad for the trees fans. Still a good story.

That’s the problem with the “money ball” stats game.  Over a large sample size it “works.”  But every possession is independent and IQ/talent will win when it counts.  You need to do both. Adjust at the end — either a layup anytime or a three with less than 5 on the clock.  Otherwise you’ll win 30 some games, but loose the last one.

You do realize that over 99% of all division 1 teams lose their last game of the season?

Indiana State didn’t lose because of any ‘analytics’ reason.  They lost because they had 77 points and Seton Hall had 79 at the end of the game.

Well that’s kind of a simplistic analysis.  How did they get there — missed threes early in the shot clock.  That is the equivalent of a turnover.  That gave SH the time to score those last 9 points.  With time winding down, a 50-60% layup is a better shot than a 30-40% three.

Up 7. Milk the clock. Get something going towards basket and either layup (force ref to make a call) or kick out for mid range or 3 ball on closing possessions. Clock was becoming your friend.  Has nothing to do with changing who you are. Indiana State has done that before.  Taking 3 ball shots early in clock at that point in game = turnovers.  However, excellent game by both teams and great season for Indiana State.

(overall Seton Hall controlled the game just a bit more than in a home crowd Indiana State and physically a little better team)

Between the poor defense v Utah, and frankly their season long metrics weren't so good, and the disastrous end of game last night, I would want to see more and better coaching from Schertz to ever consider him as the head coach at IU.

All that and maybe make it into the Dance once.

Schertz just led Indiana St to a 30 win season and another season of more than 20 wins.   I don’t think some of you on the outside looking in realize how ridiculous that is.   ISU is probably the worst job to have in MVC and he just did something that only a team with Larry Bird had more wins in a season.   What an absolute joy it was to follow this team all year or the last 2 years for that matter.   He might not be good enough for some of you however I can guarantee you a program can do way worse.  The team most of you are invested in are living through that right now.

Back to the game. What an absolute showing by ISU fans and alumni last night.   Went to the Bulldog pregame and the place was packed.  Ran into some old friends and old bartenders that I paid a lot of money to back in the day at the Bally.   The spotlight Terre Haute and the program got during this run was nice to see and deserving.  Isu alumni know this was a once in a lifetime run and more then likely won’t see another for a long minute which is why the ending was heartbreaking however if Schertz decided to play stall ball at the end and do something this team hasn’t done all year as someone on the inside who watched every single game this year I would of been more pissed.  Seton Hall had to be perfect and they were.   Down 7 they get a 50/50 ball that bounces right to a guy for an open layup.  Down 5 they get gifted 2 FTs after Swope got called for a foul on a swipe.   Down 3 they get a 50/50 tap out and they drain a 3 to tie it.   Isu missed the shots that they needed to hit to keep the pressure on.  Biggest play for me was Kent getting offensive rebound and trying to hit a leaning left handed shot at the rim.  Probably could of brought that one back out.   Hate to see it end like that but thankful for the ride they allowed me to go on.

+1 to all and it wouldn't be fair to not shoutout the winning coach. Shaheen Holloway impressed the absolute hell out of me last night. Don't know if he's a SHU lifer or what, but he's got a classic, east coast, hard nosed team that didn't blink at any point and he'll either keep making Pirates fans happy or he'll end up doing it somewhere else. That game was so high quality and a joy to experience live.

ETA: Legend has it, I'm still driving around looking for a parking spot at Butler.
