(2016) C Thon Maker

Recommended Posts

I don't see why anyone would go overseas. Look at Emmanuel Mudiay, he is almost forgotten now. Sure he'll be a high pick because of his HS career, but if you wanna go overseas and get paid, you'll get paid a lot more in one year if you go to college. My point, Thon go to IU.

He will be a high pick bc he backed up his high school hype with a tremendous showing in a tough pro league. He made a $1.2 Million for the 1 season in China and signed a multi million dollar deal with under armour a year before he would have been able to had he went to college. I'm not trying to start an argument, but the statement that these players would earn more by going to college for a year is flat out incorrect. Mudiay could have torn his ACL this season at SMU and not made a penny. Sure he could have purchased an insurance policy, but it was pretty clear his family was flat broke and wouldn't be able to afford the outrageous down payment for this type of policy. I'd love to see Thon come to IU next season but if the opportunity presented itself to become a multi millionaire a year earlier, I would jump on that deal without a sceond guess.

I don't know how tough of competition he really played in China though. The team he signed with was already one of the top teams in the league there and was already favorites to win the championship there. They had China's best big man on their squad. Plus Mudiay did get hurt while there and the team released him. He missed a good portion of the season over there because of it. He ended up coming back to their team for the playoffs and Im pretty sure his team won the championship there.

The thing is that most of these kids that go to play overseas end up playing in lower leagues. None of them have really played top European competition.

But on the Thon Maker front, I just don't see why he would pick going to a prep school for a 5th year in comparison to the competition he would see if he went to college for a year. He has seen the prep school competition already. I feel pretty confident that he will go to college, can't say I'm confident about where he will go though.

Even though Ive hated this trend of kids going to play for certain sponsored schools, Thon's connection to Adidas helps us out a lot as well.

His team lost in the finals. He lost to stephon marbury's team. The league he was in is a top 5 league in the world by far. So to say there was no real compition is false.

So what does Thon's decision timeline look like?

If he is going to come to the first summer session, he will have to announce by when?

If he is going to come to the second summer session, he will have to announce by when?

Looks like Holt signed in late August, so I would think he could always hold off until then. Doesn't leave much time for our scholarship situation to "work itself out".

I didn't say there was no real competition.
But comparing the Chinese basketball league to leagues in Europe is not a fair comparison. Its definitely an up and coming league though

If thon commits to iu, do we expect him to be a 1 or 2+ year player? He has some skills shooting and handling the ball, yet I still think he is very raw, sort of like hanner Perea, and not to mention that he needs to fill out before going to the nba. I think if he committed to iu, he would have a greater chance of staying 2 yrs than being a one and done.

There's been a lot of negativity any time a highly-touted, hyped recruit is in IU's spotlight (some of it for very good reason) and I've been extra-guilty of that. But for some reason I find myself saying "why not us?" with this one.

Nice avatar.
