(2016) C Thon Maker

Recommended Posts

Remember reading an article on Brandon Jennings and he was saying he had a Brand new Volvo given to him a Flat (apartment) and he received per diem for food. Plus his entire salary was tax-free. If all of this is true then Emmanuel, Jennings, Thon or whomever would be essentially putting entire income into savings account. (minus a few bottles of Crystal) sp?

This is why I wonder why more kids do not do this more often. Specifially kids that need to make money soon to support family.

I think we will start to see more of that.

I had a teacher the other day make a great point on this (djsalway can back this up).

He looked at the entire class and said (paraphrasing): "Think back to when you were graduating high school. Would you have been able to leave your family/friends/country and go live on your own in a completely foreign country with a 100% language barrier between most of the people you would meet? That's what these guys are looking at when they consider playing overseas for a year."

Makes college sound pretty appealing if you ask me.

I just can't stop thinking about the mis match possibilities with this cat in our lineup

Yeah, you try to double Yogi or Thon, then they move it. You try to run a 2-3. We've got too many shooters. Try to run a 3-2. We get it to Thomas. We have a beast at every position pretty much if Thon were to come to IU. JBJ could be a beast if his new role were to be, catch and shot the open shot.

Is it just me or does Tom Crean recruit foreigners better than most coaches? This might be a reason he got thon to consider iu. For example Dante exum, hanner Perea, Peter jurkin. Also I think Indiana university is an extraordinary attraction for foreign students in general for a Midwestern school , because it offers unique opportunities for foreigners. I'm pretty sure iu gets a lot of Africans in particular for some reason.

They generally don't do it alone though. They have a parent, sibling, cousin friends etc go with them. Never go alone. Believe Jennings had his stuff paid for and one guest the whole time he was there.

^^

A guy like Thon has been thru a lot as well. I feel like this wouldn't be a huge transition for him to make.

Also some young guys that live in very bad situations in inner cities might be looking for that type of change. Could end up being a huge culture shock, but the part where they get out of their current situation and are making large sums of money could be enough to push them to make a decision.

This kid handles the ball like a point guard shoots like a shooting guard and can block and play the post like the 4/5 positions

Only downside is he won't be able to bump and bruise down low in the big ten. That's what TB is for though.

Id say a lot of smaller schools and schools out west both do it better. Gonzaga, for example, had Pangos, Sabonis, and Karnowski were all major players on their team and were all foreign players. Gonzaga actually travels to Canada and Europe to recruit. The foreigners that IU has recruited have all been people that played in the US for a few years (minus Exum)

The truth is it doesn't make any sense in the long term for these top prospects to go overseas. Mudiay didn't want to go but wasn't going to qualify due to Prime Prep. Jennings couldn't get into Arizona after 2 failing test scores. Not only does the NBA prefer a year in college because they have a better grasp of the competition, but the shoe companies can build your brand here in the US which equates to plenty more money than a year at 1.2 mil or whatever Mudiay's contract was.

For Mudiay, it shouldn't matter as much in terms of draft stock. He is a top 4 pick regardless, but think of Mudiay's brand right now compared to Okafor, Russell, Towns...on the radio they still butcher the kids name. He is such a question mark to most who don't follow recruiting.

I'm not sure it's off the table for Thon, but it makes sense to stay as relevant as possible here in the US. Ed Smith will go where the money goes, long term imo.
