(2017) PG Paul Scruggs to Xavier

Recommended Posts

I regret to inform you that like 11 of the last 13 folks Scruggs has followed on twitter are affiliated with Xavier hoops. He only follows 78 folks and none are IU-hoops related.

I have no info but I don't think this means he's necessarily Xavier's, especially given pap's comments here. I can't imagine it's good, though.

Eh, maybe but that stuff is always overrated.  When guys go on OVs they make friends, then they follow them on social media.  I don't put much stock into who recruits follow anymore.

Ok so Scruggs likely to Xavier and Waters likely headed to B-Town. Based on reading all the comments it seems like most would prefer Scruggs. I get the in-state thing (and the connection to Wilkes) but is that all it is or is he actually a clear cut better player? I know they're both 4 stars and Scruggs is rated a little higher and he also has a size advantage on Waters. But hey, I want the guy who wants to wear the Cream and Crimson. And if that's an out-of-state guy then so be it. We saw a senior class last year with several guys who genuinely got what it meant to be a Hoosier, and two of them were from Illinois. In-state guys are fine but I just want guys who want to be here.

Not a big difference in skill, if at all. Waters averaged 25 ppg at a power prep school last year. Aside from height and LENGTH, Waters likely the MUCH better PG prospect.

Waters interviews like a complete class act. I can't say on Scruggs one way or another but Waters would be easy to root for and another quality kid.

I've been quoted saying I wanted Scruggs more, but merely based on size and I think Rojo and Newkirk can play PG.

That's fair enough, I usually tend to prefer the bigger pg's myself. I'm sure if this were to happen people would be fine with Waters, I was just curious as to if Scruggs was viewed as that much better of a prospect or if it was more of in-state pride.

Sounds like Waters to IU is more and more likely. I can live with this. My only gripe is height in the Scruggs/Waters debate. I otherwise like Waters.

Like both players but I do understand the want for Scruggs because it helps with Wilkes. I'm still confident on Wilkes but I'd feel like we locked him up if Scruggs were to commit.

The thing is Scruggs isn't a point guard. Waters is a point guard. Scruggs wants to be a point guard (for legitimate reasons) but that doesn't make him one and there are some questions about how his game translates at PG at the collegiate level.

See to me, it comes down to who can play point guard in 2018 and beyond: a sophomore Scruggs or a sophomore Waters.  Rojo and Newkirk should be able to split PG duties for 2017 no problem barring injury or NBA draft, so neither Scruggs nor Waters would need to run the offense their freshman season.

I just like the idea of Waters, a true point guard, practicing against Robert Johnson and Newkirk every day and getting 12 mpg as a backup, and assuming the role of lead PG for 2018 because he's definitely more of a point guard than Scruggs is.

I get the argument for Scruggs, and I'd take him, but I want Waters more.

All things being equal, I would prefer an Indiana kid WANTING to play for Indiana University. However, that doesn't seem to happen too often these days.

It's easy to say take Scruggs over Waters because of height. I agree having a 6-4 PG would have advantages on defense, especially in some of Crean's schemes with switching.

The advantage with Waters is he's less likely to leave early for the NBA. I wouldn't mind having the PG position solidified from 2018-2021 with a really good PG.

In the end, we have little to do with their decisions. If Scruggs is determined to go to X because he'll have the ball in his hand from day one without competition for playing time that's his decision and best of luck. Didn't X sign a good to great PG this season...?
