I loved him in Days of Thunder. "Rubbin', son, is racin."

Rumor has it that he turned down Silence of the Lambs to do Days of Thunder. I also liked him in Jack Reacher who ran the shooting range Reacher went to.  RIP to one of the greats.

Sgt. Pendergrast was his best role in Falling Down other than the Godfather

Got to confess, despite him being in 2 of probably my 5 favorite movies ever, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Godfather, and knowing that he was objectively great, never felt like I was really a fan of Duvall specifically. But then you look at the filmography in print and it’s just nuts and you realize that he wasn’t just great, he was GREAT.

DoT isn’t a great movie by any means, although I find it fun, but his portrayal of Harry Hogg is an all time great role. He just nails it and goes toe to toe with Cruise in every scene.

Agree. He probably has a better filmography than someone like Nicholson but wasn’t considered as big of a Hollywood star. Very underrated career.

He had a lot of great roles and elevated a lot of characters but if ever there was an actor and a character made for each other, Robert Duval as Augustus McCrae in Lonesome Dove was it.
