I am curious what the theft and fraud was related to this time around.

He did the image rehab thing after he got of jail and he was working at some logistics company.  Sad to see him implode again.

In summary? Fraud scheme to amass investors for an opportunity that did not exist.

It's a pretty short money financial crime - borderline coulda been a civil suit. Financial crimes of under $50k that take investigative work usually do not get much traction - there are so many of them and not enough local detectives with financial crimes investigative experience to cover all of those ones that exist. Leary's likely got more attention because he has a financial crimes conviction record, and recidivists likely get a much longer sentence under Indiana sentencing guidelines.

But generally? In my 35+ years of seeing this stuff a financial crime with a loss of under about $250,000 is all but a zero chance of ever getting a federal prosecutive look. And if someone lies to get money but the deal hasn't yet created a loss? That's been quite literally a zero chance of prosecutorial attention from federal or even the newest rookie detective.

Wow... déjà vu all over again... there's obviously more to this story.

Probably not all that much complexity to the story.

Occam's Razor - the most likely explanation is the one that makes the most sense. In this case; the most likely explanation is fairly simple; he needed money for some bad habit like gambling, and lied to get it.

He had a pretty good grift going on if it is all is true, but sooner or later, if he didn't have a facility or equipment or even a team, he had to know that he would get found out.

Yeah - so in other words he had a terrible grift; just had some name recognition.

If only Leary took that last shot instead of Jamal Meeks we might have hung another banner.  Stupid TV teddy.  That game still pisses me off royally.

Oh and this thing sucks too.

I wouldn’t hand 500 dollars to somebody without googling them. This is mind boggling

Agreed. One can argue that people (the “victims”) must be ignorant, but guys like Leary prey on the gullible. I have no sympathy for repeat offenders, especially in financial fraud cases. Can’t help but think that Leary knew exactly what he was doing. It's truly a shame that he was ever a part of the Indiana basketball program.

My thoughts exactly.  My guess is a gambling problem.
