I'm rolling with TJ baby. Anyone thinking we're going to simply get Kurtis Rourke out of the portal again is setting up for disappointment. A phenomenal football player and more likely than not a total anomaly. We'll see who else pops up in the portal, but my expectation will be to see TJ (or hey, maybe even Cherry) next fall until further notice. Let Tino and hopefully Shanahan cook during development season.

Let's not overlook that those 2 have been coached by these guys all year. Those coaches have enough experience to have a good idea whether they can get them to the level they want (or if they're already there) before next season.

Regardless, I think the coaching staff will evaluate players in the transfer portal to see if there is another potential home run like Rourke there. Someone that is a multi-year starter that is a proven winner.

To be fair, I would prefer he be the guy.  These stats help make the case that he could be.  I am not auto-thinking he isn't the guy but rather challenging the auto-think idea that he is the guy.  I think your post indicating we did not have a portal need at QB initiated this thought but that may not have been your intent.  

IF he can be the guy, bump up his completion % a little more, hit some of those tough throws that Rourke made all year AND combine that with his mobility I think he can be an incredible QB.

At what has just happened in the 2024-25 IU football season no thoughts nor suggestions are needed for the IU coach and staff about 2025-26.  They are way ahead of any comments from earth as the IU football program has recently just landed on the moon.  Don’t try to help and mess them up now.

I don't have a problem adding a portal... that probably means we will have 5 QBs on scholly next year.

Not overlooked, there just aren’t many meaningful reps for those guys throughout a season. Especially Cherry. The real development comes from January-July.

Our portal activity at that position will be telling. It might be the only position where the level of need is a grey area.

That’s an important take.

I think if we’re rolling with Tayven as the likely starter, we are telegraphing that we have confidence that either Cherry or Mendoza would be good enough to take over the team.

If we bring in serious portal competition? That can mean that Tayven would have been our only functional option otherwise.

I would also Imagine Tayvon might transfer if IU brings in a portal QB.

 

I'm betting they’ll transfer in a project QB and roll with Jackson. I’m happy to be wrong though.

Does the recruitment of Julian Lewis shed any light on what the staff might be thinking?  Would Lewis have likely started next year?  

I think that a top portal QB pushed Tayven to consider a transfer more than the freshman.  We will likely need more than 1 QB next year and it seems the coaches are able to stack talent so maybe they land a strong portal QB but Tayven still wins the job.

Now this is the sort of transfer I can get next to. The 1 position group that felt somewhat out-talented was the o-line in the UM and OSU games and imagine that will be an issue in a playoff game.

Great question, and I dont want to speak for Taylor (he's active on X if you would like to reach out), but using West as an example: He redshirted (R-FR) in '20, played from '21 to '24 R-Sr year., and would have his extra 'COVID Year' remaining if he chooses to use it.

Understandably there is a lot that goes into players sticking around or leaving, so the graph is a bit subjective based on known variables.

CJ has played 10+ games in 4 seasons that weren't 2020. He's no different than Jailin.

Jailin's freshman season was 2021 though so he doesn't fall under the COVID rule at all. My read was that any kid in school in 2020 basically gets 6 years to play 5 seasons. The read could be wrong, but he is different than Walker.

 If he had only played 4 games in 21-24, then he could RS that year and still play. 

One of those 5 seasons in 6 years is the 2020 season.
