His first option just got shut  down by the NBA. Really had nothing to do with being smart just unlucky his original plan got shut down

He knew this a long time ago. It's been speculated since last spring that the G-League team would no longer be a thing.

You totally glossed over my first point about Tucker.  BTW, Tamar Bates was a high ranked incoming freshman at IU and he wasn’t a starter and he was here two years.

...who very specifically said he liked the fact that he wasn't promised anything from Woody, that if he'd have to earn playing time.

100%. The only way to compete is to have financial support these days. This kid was smart! He waited until the spring to commit to hold out for the highest dollar amount possible. Now, Indiana, needing a big splash and some positive news offers this kid money others wouldn't. Good for this kid.

Tucker really didn't wait.  Initially, Tucker had agreed to play for the Ignite in the G league.  The NBA announced recently that they were not continuing the Ignite, so Tucker had to scramble and find a home.  Fortunately, for us and Tucker there was a mutual need, and we have a large NIL pool.

Per 24/7 Storr has committed to Illinois already.

Pharrell Payne from Minnesota is in the portal.

Makes sense.  He wants that alpha Terrence Shannon role.

I think he was likely just waiting on the official word because there's been talks for almost a year of the G-League team being discontinued. I heard this back in spring in 2023 from scouts.

For all of you who are upset that IU's money resources are allowing us to "buy a team:"

LOTS OF TEAMS HAVE LOTS OF MONEY and to a certain extent, most every P5 team is now bought and paid.

Sure but I think you're missing the intent of the concern.  Everyone gets paid -- no problem.  Question become whether money is the overriding factor.  If your just doing it "for the money" then you're really just going thru the motions.  There is no connection.  There is no glue.

Outside of just having a distaste for what NIL (and that is a joke of a name, this is pay for play) has done to college in general, I think when people talk about Woodson "buying a team" it is a frustration with the idea that he is a mediocre coach with an outdated approach to the game who was thrown a lifeline to go buy players by a few big donors who are as out of touch as he is.  Also, is this a permanent commitment to actually compete by these people or was this a shot in the dark to save their guy from himself?

We specialize in recruiting scramblers.

I’m not disputing you but asking if you really know that he makes all these “I guarantee you will start” promises.
By your calculation, if we land those guys, Gallo is definitely on the bench and if we also land Connell he would  automatically join Gallo on the bench due to other promises ?

I really hope that is not what is happening.

Does Woodson even know we’re recruiting these guys? I’m not even a bit joking. There is no way he can possibly keep track of all the names being thrown at him. I really don’t think he wants anything to do with roster construction which is why IU is talking about the GM role. I guess my point is Woodson isn’t telling these kids they’ll be starting because he doesn’t even know who he’s talking to

I agree that a team of nothing but guys that only joined because it was the absolute highest bid is not optimal.
These days a program has to have the NIL $$$$ to compete for players but hopefully you don’t have a team of guys that literally don’t care about anything other than who is the highest bidder.

So money guys like Perkins, Conwell, Leland Walker, and Hickman that are from Indiana and if they come, will do so in real part to be in front of family and at their state's flagship school?

Also inferring that paying Mullins and Sisley would be a winner.

Agree with you on the principle. Of all of our leading incoming candidates, the out of state five star is the only obvious outlier.

Grab 3/4 (sorry Leland) and Bradshaw please. Then maybe one more big and Blazi as the 13th spot.
