Haven’t seen this posted yet. An actual highlight reel of Malone. Obviously it’s highlights, but there’s some instructive stuff. Best thing here for me, by far, are his hands. He doesn’t fight the ball in any way, even in traffic. That’s very nice. Also looks to have pretty decent feet in tight quarters That’ll play. Not explosive, but given his big frame and how soft he is right now Marshall could do him some serious good in about 90 days. Don’t love the stroke, but he takes it confidently so I assume it goes in. Hard to tell much past that, but at 1st blush he doesn’t look like he would be out of place on a high major roster, though speed of play might take some time. But in a limited viewing I’m not opposed to the idea.

Not sure why so many think this is true. 5th year senior and most trusted player of the HC is most likely starting imo. I could be wrong, for sure, but I don't see a scenario where Galloway is coming off the bench with the current roster projection.

If you look at Woodson's history, he does seem to favor experienced guys.  See Miller Kopp.

Last season IU's freshmen and sophomores played more minutes than their juniors and seniors.

I mean Mbagko and Reneau vs Walker and Leal? Yeah of course. That's not really an apples to apples when discussing Galloway vs an incoming Fr or So

Personally I wouldn’t say needs to play, but he’s really talented. Question is all about his health, not ability. If he’s full go he will definitely challenge for minutes. He has a major injury to overcome but he was dressed at end of season and has an entire summer of conditioning coming. I hope he’s ready to play, he’ll make us better if he is

Is Rice "better" than X?  Probably, has more upside.  But he did what he did and the fact is he doesn't shoot the three as good (not saying he can't improve).  

Is Ballo "better" than Ware?  They are different players, with similar numbers.  I am really concerned we end up with two bigs under the basket clogging everything up (like Race and TJD did).    

So like I said, net net it looks like a push to me right now.  We lost 2 good players and replaced them with 2 good players. If we had to take the floor tonight we have:  Rice, Gallo, MM, Malik and Ballo.  How many wins is that better than X, Gallo, MM, Malik and Ware?  Does that lead to more blowouts in non-conference to improve the tournament resume?  These are the big questions.  

Tucker and the next two players are the ones who can potentially make a difference.  If we can upgrade those players that left, maybe we have something.  Maybe one pushed Gallo out of the starting lineup?   Maybe one can shoot?  Maybe one doesn't drop off the big man play when someone is in foul trouble?   Like I said, there is still a lot of work to do.  Am I happy we landed these guys, yes I am.  But I am not falling for the hype.  Call me cautiously optimistic.  

Gonna have to say if I look back at your post history, you weren’t calling X a good player.  And you are trying to compare first season Myles Rice after two years of cancer to sixth year Xavier Johnson.  Would you really go on record saying that you’ wouldn’t rather have second year Myles rice over ANY year if X?

If that's the case then you have Gallo, Rice, Carlyle, MgBako and Baso .... where's Reneau? I cannot see those two guards from the Pac12 agreeing to come off the bench when they could start anywhere else. Baso at a $1.2M is starting. With MbBako's late improvement in shooting the 3 and getting to the basket he is starting.

Like @Chris007 mentioned a few days ago, not enough basketballs to go around ... to me that is a good thing. Competition for playing time is a good thing. How many times has IU fans complained about lack of a bench? Well next year it looks like IU should have a really good bench and they still have scholarships to give.

I am taking projections out of the equation and just going on simplistic blind numbers — past performance.  It’s not advanced by any means.  I am just not seeing how these two moves, and these two moves only, make us a championship contender.   They may be some of the better players available, but their stats don’t jump off the charts compared with what we lost.    With these two additions are we really significantly better than we have been the past three years?  Or will we be back here in November saying the things we did the past three years.  
 

Plus we need to pass the time until the next visits this weekend. :)

With just Ballo and Rice? No. But I think Rice could be significantly better than X. And given that we had to replace Ware and X, it’s hard to imagine doing better than these two going into the portal.

And adding in Carlyle, Tucker and whoever else does make us significantly better than we have been in terms of talent.

That doesn’t mean Woodson will win at a high level. But he is certainly building a roster better than it has been. As long as we get a shooter or two with remaining spots.

Question regarding a signed letter of intent.  With the portal is there really a need anymore?  It seems that everyone who asks out gets a pass and allowed to move to another school.

Good point. I am not sure what an LOI even does anymore in the 'Wild West' of college athletics.
