Transfer Portal w IU Interest

I don’t pay enough attention to coaching searches to know how common it is, but none of his WVU players/recruits following him stuck out to me too. You’d think at least one guy would. The Whiz Kid has several guys following him to Iowa. Idk, I guess I just expected to hear more news at this point than we’ve heard.

Well his best player is following him so there's that.

Have lived in both states they are not the same at all .

Yea.  I actually think WVU and the state have some endearing qualities and people rag on them too much.  But, Bloomington has a lot more going for it.  Especially if you're a basketball player.

We were told to be patient with our last 5 coaches, and proceeded to watch them all fail for one reason or other.

The first few weeks, even months, of a coach's tenure is very much the honeymoon period. Getting lapped in the portal by programs who need less than you is a good way reach the end of that phase faster.

Wouldn’t say we’re being “lapped” just yet but aside from his very highly rated son, who should not be overlooked, he hasn’t made the big splashy move yet that gets fans to say “whoaaa.”  It’s also what, week 3?

Tohnje or however you spell it at Wisconsin was rated like 260 or something in the portal. I’m excited to have a staff that identifies and develops talent again.

You have to have a strategy and stick to it. I know a lot of college fans don’t watch the pros, but for those of us who do we are pretty familiar with salary caps and letting good players walk that are too expensive.

If CDD isn’t good at that he will fail. If he is he will have success. At this point, I don’t even know how you would begin to assess that until he has a roster. I like Dix as a player, but he’s far from make or break. Hell, i like Conwell more, but if CDD thought he was too expensive then you have to stand firm and rely on your judgement.

This. A huge part of a coach's job now is to handle each school's recruiting "cap." Unless you're a school that can keep going back to boosters over and over again for specific recruits, you've got to be able to manage your recruiting resources in smart Bill Belicheck kind of way. That means letting players go if they're either not producing or too expensive.

This is going to be especially tricky for someone in DDV's situation, given that he's got to fill the entire roster and that the player's salaries seem to have grown quite a bit this year. I don't envy him...

Dumb question maybe, but something I have wondered about with this portal deal.   Does IU give DRock a set amount of money and then it is completely his call as to how much he is willing to give each player?  Or does he have to approval from anyone for how he divides it up?

I’m extremely impatient right now and am starved for some encouraging recruiting wins, especially considering the entire roster is being reconstructed, but yeah, it’s early. I would hope to see some wins in the next couple of weeks

I don’t think it needs to be flashy.  It needs to be well spent and constructed.  5 of the top 8 teams in last years portal rankings underperformed during the season.  One of them redeemed itself in the tourney.  Louisvilles highest ranked kid in the portal was Edwards at 77.

And if IU has the year that WVU just had then no one will be happy this time next year.

Except if you're beating what was it, 3 top ten teams AND playing in the Big Ten? You're in the tournament and that's something for a complete overhaul on a dead blue blood.

Here is a different perspective. Maybe Devries is great and he is dealing with systematic issues within IU that other schools are not facing.

Some potential thoughts although I have ZERO insight here:

1. Maybe IU does not have enough NIL (I know what is reported but no one really knows).

2. Maybe Woodson and his minions are badmouthing Hoosiers behind the scenes to important people making Devries' job harder which I could absolutely see. Most fired coaches would not do this but Woodson seems like a petty enough person who would.

3. Maybe the notion of IU fans hurting the program with 'unrealistic expectations' is turning prospects off. Note I don't think this is the case but sometimes perception is reality and that may have an impact on prospective recruits.

My point is we don't really know what is going on behind the scenes and any of the following could be true:

1. Things could be great and a slew of prospects commit in next week or two.

2. Devries may have challenges others are not facing that he may or may not overcome in next week or two as described above.

3. He has no idea how to handle this and is in over his head.

My point is lets judge at the end of the month when we see where state of the roster is at and it is to early to say. In election terms "race is to early to call" and needs more info before we start analyzing 'returns'.

I agree but many IUBB fans want the big flashy “we’re back” moment… and I just don’t think we get that in this transfer portal cycle. That’s okay. He’s building. Has a good formula that works. Gonna be a totally new team and program next year. Watching it grow from nothing will be very gratifying. A lot of fans think our resources and prestige means we get to skip past all the hard work and expect instant success. Delayed gratification is a huge part of fanhood IMO. Everyone wants year 1 to be a good year and it makes sense that missing on some top prospects early triggers IU fans who are full of PTSD after 20 years lol.

That seems like a fan issue more than anything else.  Don’t need to win the offseason, you need to win the season.  Get to a mindset of the results will be on the floor.  Tom Coverdale and Jared Odle were two of the more important players from our 2002 team and I take it that wouldn’t have the were back moment.  We need to get back to building teams instead of gathering potential.

Lol you guys are funny. We got the stay calm everything is fine crowed and the were doomed crowed! I hate to say it but being a fan of this program now for over 40 years now is definitely the time to panic! If it looks bad is most definitely is! Hopefully that changes and we will be fine but I will believe otherwise until something positive happens to this program and actually ends up being a good thing! Possible the negative reaction to coach bailing after 1 year is having a negative impact?

Okay I'm ready for action:

When, where, to whom, and how should I panic?

We beat Purdue and won at MSU which is probably one of the better wins of the year. We were 2nd right behind WVU as the most egregious tourney snubs.

WVU basically had a nearly identical year to us last year by the numbers, with the caveat they had worse injury luck. Nobody will be happy with that type of season, nor should they be.
