Conwell starts no matter what imho

That's fine, but others were acting like we could get Tucker, Perkins, and Conwell.  That's just not going to happen in a world were all three of these kids will require solid minutes to come to IU.

Promises all depend on need and player.   Also very easy to tell a player what you envision their role being with it not being a lie if it doesn’t work out.   And some coaches (Self) will flat out lie about it to get guys in.  Remember in Bates’ case that he Decommitted after Shaka Smart was fired at Texas and wanted to play for an African American coach.

All that is true but what I said is true also. Certain players ask for promises. Mgbako wanted a promise he would be a starter. When you have to recruit in the spring to get certain players you make promises. As you said Self lies. Some coaches won't promise to be a starter but will promise 20-25 minutes a game. These things do happen. Unfortunately our coach makes them more than others

Tucker is a wing.  Most wings can play the small forward or the shooting guard role.  He's now a Hoosier.

Committed: IU basketball lands national top-20 class of 2024 5-star wing Bryson Tucker – The Daily Hoosier

Lots to like in that article.

Just wish, in a perfect world, that his range extended beyond the elbow. Hopefully we can get a guy capable of opening things up (or maybe the plan is to go with a 4 in 1 out offense…LOL)

That is what I assumed but from what I was reading I thought the implication was that we only landed high level guys by guaranteeing them a starting spot.
I’ll admit my interpretation of the post might be incorrect.

That is not correct but we have made promises. But hopefully we're paying enough we don't need to pay and promise

For all of you who are upset that IU's money resources are allowing us to "buy a team:"

LOTS OF TEAMS HAVE LOTS OF MONEY and to a certain extent, most every P5 team is now bought and paid.

100%. The only way to compete is to have financial support these days. This kid was smart! He waited until the spring to commit to hold out for the highest dollar amount possible. Now, Indiana, needing a big splash and some positive news offers this kid money others wouldn't. Good for this kid.

I don’t know that he makes them more than others, just keeps them more than others.

That’s interesting, but a bummer.

Like I said in a previous post I just didn’t know if that was the case. I assumed there were strong “you really fill a need we have” type of comments but am not a fan of “you will definitely start if you come here”.

His first option just got shut  down by the NBA. Really had nothing to do with being smart just unlucky his original plan got shut down

He knew this a long time ago. It's been speculated since last spring that the G-League team would no longer be a thing.

Per 24/7 Storr has committed to Illinois already.

Pharrell Payne from Minnesota is in the portal.

1) that guy is a beast  2) I detest what "college" basketball has become.

You totally glossed over my first point about Tucker.  BTW, Tamar Bates was a high ranked incoming freshman at IU and he wasn’t a starter and he was here two years.

...who very specifically said he liked the fact that he wasn't promised anything from Woody, that if he'd have to earn playing time.

Tucker really didn't wait.  Initially, Tucker had agreed to play for the Ignite in the G league.  The NBA announced recently that they were not continuing the Ignite, so Tucker had to scramble and find a home.  Fortunately, for us and Tucker there was a mutual need, and we have a large NIL pool.

Makes sense.  He wants that alpha Terrence Shannon role.
