Paid JUCO kids for years to get where Gonzaga is now. Also tried to drop the “do you know who I am” card after his DUI arrest last year. Theres a lot less good college basketball coaches than there are perfect people in this world. Trying to find both leads to a lot of double-digit losses.

I stand corrected but agree with you.

He wins. Every top 5 coach in the country does some shady stuff. That's just the way it is. It's not up to us to be a moral compass for the program. If kids seem a problem with a coach, they don't need to commit. It's always their decision where and who they play for. Mark Few might be the exception. He seems to be squeaky clean.

It isn't about NCAA rules but breaking laws

You didn’t ask me….but I’ll play anyways
1. Chris Beard (Win right away)
2. Bruce Pearl  (Win right away)
3. Josh Shertz (Win in 2-3 years and builds winning program)
4. Greg Tonagel (Maybe the best coach on this list)
5. Dusty May (50/50 guy. Hire him bc he’s probably the best we can get at this stage in the game)

We’ve got Tonagel on the list so this topic is officially rolling!!! [emoji23]

There is a far cry from being involved in some basketball recruiting dirt and laying hands on a woman. People need to stop acting like they are equivalent.

Might want to add allegedly in there for accuracy. And all charges against him were dropped. I wont give the guy a life sentence for maybe, possibly doing something bad. People make mistakes. He didn't murder someone.

All charges were dropped. If he was convicted of that crime, he'd be in prison.

You are so naive, she was either paid off or to scared to testify. Just because charges were dropped doesn't mean a crime wasn't committed

IU did willfully employ a coach for 20 years after being convicted of assaulting a cop though however.

I agree with all of this other than I actually think he'll walk away. He does not look like he's enjoying this experience, and he certainly doesn't need the money. He wants IU to win and he isn't getting us there.

Monster egos are what they are...

Hah. That's funny.

You win. Let's hire the next up and comer assistant or an average coach who was born in Indiana. We'll be in the exact same spot we are when you guys are screaming for his exit in 2-3 years AGAIN.

If we don't take a risk or be bold, we're ALWAYS going to be beaten by some school that did.

Do you ever pay attention to college basketball besides IU. When was the last hire where a top power 5 conference coach left for another top power 5 conference job.

Did Duke and UNC both act like Blue Bloods when they hired an assistant coach with no HC experience. How about Syracuse or Villanova. UCONN hired a coach from Rhode Island

He’s a basketball coach paid to win games, something he’s extremely good at. Once people realize IU isn’t hiring Beard to become a priest, the type of person he is off the court is irrelevant so long as he does his job. But yes, we are a self-righteous bunch.

We aren't hiring anyone to be a priest... but character still matters... and roughing up a woman is not the type of character I want to see on the IU sidelines... let Ole Miss keep him... sitting at 5-4 in the SEC isn't really setting the basketball world on fire, either...

I don’t know how to unpack this post.  Beard’s behavior not for off than Knight’s? This post makes me sick and is wrong on so many levels.

My man, I'm not justifying anything or anyone in the post. I'm saying people are flawed and we aren't going to find a perfect coach. We also looked past all of Knight's flaws because he won games. Lastly, a point that some are far worse than others, which is another point I was trying to make. No need to go to confession over it; there's no condoning of any behavior.

This board became better for me when I put him on ignore. Unfortunately I can still see his responses when you guys quote him.

I don't reply to him anymore. At this point it seems more like he's trolling than  actually seriously pushing Facial Hair because there's 0% chance he gets hired.

Have to ask where those funds were put together and how the offer was handled. Money has strings attached, always. My guess is that in this case the strings for "taking a long shot on Stevens" were "if you miss, hire this guy".

the story I read (maybe here) was that the "string" on the donor's funds may have been tied to hiring Stevens alone... Get him, here's the cash... if he says "no", give it back... meaning that the alleged $7M figure was ONLY for Stevens and when he said no, the cash was not available for another coach.

This will be the 4th program he’s taken to the tournament in 8 years. That’s one more than IU’s been altogether in the same time frame.
