Kenpom- 100

Adjusted defense-102

Adjusted offense-100

For a 3rd year coach with our cumulative talent, that is strikingly bad.

It’s like worst or second worst of any major conference bad. I’m going from memory but only Creans first two rebuild teams being much worse than that.

Other than former player and he deserves 4 years, there’s not a lot to point to in the “bring him back” category.

Pretty sure that ship sailed when they hired him; it's so stupid it bears repeating, they hired a guy that hadn't been a HC in nearly 10 years because he played here 40 years ago. No serious program even gives him any consideration.
Correct

All the schools you mentioned are, in fact, Blue Bloods that all had tremendous momentum/consistent winning. This will probably upset you but IU isn't. No one outside Indiana cares about our banners, especially 18 year old recruits. Just bc we have 5 banners hanging does not cement our status as a Blue Blood.
UNC, Duke and Cuse hired from within and it worked for them (not really Cuse) and honestly, I'd rather see Jordan Hulls in charge over Mike Woodson. Nova is 11-10 and went to the NIT last year. UCONN is killing it - can't deny that. We've tried an IU guy and it's failed. We don't have the momentum they all had. The only time we did was before we fired Crean and we hired Archie freaking Miller. Momentum is how you build something and keep the recruits coming consistently. You can't keep swinging, missing and hiring a new guy every 2-3 years. You just can't.
Time to ditch the losing mentality and get a proven winner. Had hope for Woody and it looked good for a minute but the truth is he was never it.
And yet we went out and hired a guy from those banners era thinking it somehow mattered. Other than quinn and his buddies nobody really cares Woodson played at iu 40 years ago. Kids certainly do not.

Yep, you search out the previous generation of winners, you find the best programs at bending the rules in their favor. The saying “if you aren’t cheating, you aren’t trying” applies to college football/basketball as much or more than anywhere else.

That’s what makes Brad Stevens, Matt Painter currently and a few others so impressive.

I'm with you in general. Stevens was a king in my eyes...I bet he LOVED coaching against Mike Davis. Mark Few sure seems clean as well. But seriously, who knows? None of us. That said, let's not forget Painter cheated on his wife with a former Purdue cheerleader leading to divorce. There is no perfect coach, I'm telling you. We all think we know but we don't.  I don't know if I want to play the odds for 3 upstanding coaches and 25 who know how to win. Define our boundary and let's hire someone to win within those fences.

11 other major conference teams worse then that

Just looked it up. We in front of Michigan by a hair but behind Rutgers by a smidge (all 3 teams are terrible). A rebuilding year for ND and whatever is going on at Arkansas, otherwise it’s the dregs of college basketball.  I actually can’t believe there’s 3 B12 teams worse.

Mizzou and Ok St. hope for better and I’d argue a couple seasons this bad gets you fired there, but ideally IU has higher standards.  Georgetown and Lville are currently broken programs, along with the perpetually awful Depaul, Cal and Oregon St.

Kenpom isn’t the end all, be all but it should be embarrassing to be this bad.

Also, it’s not like we lost a star shooter and can’t score a lick and come in at 145ortg but have a scrappy 55drtg to hang our hat on. No, we’re thoroughly bad at both ends.

Louisville won’t make the same mistake twice and make a PC hire. You can count on that. They won’t be down for long. They have an administration that gives a sh*t.

It tend to believe this. They’ve missed a bunch lately but I think they hit it big this time.

The possibility of UM, OSU, Louisville, UCLA, maybe Indiana (probably not) being open the same season Is wild.

Read the story if you like, but it's his last paragraph that sums it up.

My message to Mike Woodson? It’s time to look in the mirror and actually do what you are saying — get to work and get them over the hump. No more excuses. Don’t put it on the players; it’s on you.

He also calls out the lack of accountability. If the staff doesn't hold the senior leaders accountable, there won't be any between players.

Of course, even though they're seniors they are not leaders.

It’s probably a good argument for making a move now IF there’s a candidate at a lower level you really love. Because if that guy jumps to one of those jobs and succeeds, you’re likely not pulling him away in a year or two.

I mean, your “fact” has been confirmed by nothing more than internet rumors. Even if it is true, Mike Woodson as their #2 option wasn’t a winning mentality and frankly doesn’t even make sense. How do you pivot from offering Brad Stevens $7 million to hiring Mike Woodson?

And even if they want to win, they only want to win by their rules, rules which are nearly impossible to win under in college basketball and which require a top-tier coach. Yet top-tier coaches won’t come here because they can go to other schools where they won’t be forced to win with one hand tied behind their back.

In the era of NIL and free agency, what the hell is tying a hand behind their back?

The defense has gotten worse each year under Woodson too.

The only way Woodson should even be considered to be coming back is if he:

a) locks down Maliek, MM, McNeeley, and possibly Queen.

b) Has a real plan to hit the portal and fill in the missing roster needs, especially at guard.

c) Has a real plan to stack up some 2025 recruits to build a base from.

If any one of those are questionable, he should be let go.  Period.

I agree with this.

And I would add:

d) has a real plan to address lingering issues from the last year or two (defensive scheme, offensive scheme, blocking out, free throws, etc.) some of that is a function of talent but not all IMO.

Better talent still playing poorly isn’t a full enough fix.

You left off "have a reasonable coaching philosophy" and "find a way to implement it".

Screw it... he won't be able to pull any of that off, so just can his butt today.
