Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Let me off the hook for what? I was very practical and level-headed this summer in saying that Woodson deserved a 4th season and wasn't going to join the mob just yet while readily acknowledging he was now on the clock. I wasn't ready to dance on any graves before Thanksgiving. IU put together a nice little run a few weeks back but could not handle any kind of sustained success. The energy level and effort reflected the last two games signals that the players have quit on their coach. For that, a change is not only needed, but warranted.

It's as simple as that. I didn't buy into the mid-season rumors that Bruce Pearl was leaving Auburn and I didn't take Woodson's comments on senior day at a personal level.

You were wrong about what this team would do this year, so people are going to rib you a bit since you were very confident in your assessment. In hindsight, do you still think Woody should have gotten this 4th year? What you’re perceiving as practical and level-headed, some may call missing the forest for the trees. In any case, glad to have everybody aboard the Goodbye Woody train. Look forward to supporting the next coach.

Yes I absolutely believe Woodson deserved a 4th season even with hindsight. Firing a coach, especially an alum, after 3 years is terrible optics, considering Archie had just gotten 4 years. Now had Woodson finished with multiple losing seasons, no tournaments, etc it would have been a tougher conversation but you're getting 4 years at IU unless you have a Sampson level scandal.

He didn't mention anything about race in his article

Not in that article no.  He said in a previous article he did not trust the fan bases intentions (the ones calling for Woodson to be fired).

Ferguson has to be like 85 years old at this point, right?  How much influence can he have?

He knows all the influential people at IU and also the state government.  Cook is obviously our biggest donor and he is woven into that company/family.  Unfortunately, he has a lot of influence.  He and Quinn are a nightmare combo.

Mack fell pretty hard at Louisville, pretty fast. 16 mths. after a 24-7 season and number 1 ranking he was canned.

Still wild how fast that crumbled.

The whole extortion thing with his assistant coach was weird and I'm sure that played a part. But I do think Mack is one of the few coaches with the personality, the demeanor, and the ego to handle a job with this kind of noise.

“players quit on their coach”

”a program with this kind of noise”

Always using language to subtly shift the onus away from Woodson and to either the players or fanbase. Just awful stuff.

Meanwhile we’re approaching a quarter century without seeing an E8. Crean and Archie, Woodson all received ample time to build a foundation and somewhat consistent winner.
Surely UK has more “noise” than us and you definitely never would have thought last season that Pope could handle that noise.

You use noise like Woody uses the term hump.

Does it really matter. Some come to the right decision slower than others and we are not all going to agree on things. We are all on the same train now.

Good days ahead for Hoosier fans.

Pope is 20 games into his tenure, let's not put him in the Hall of Fame quite just yet.

But yes, you need more than X's and O's to win at this job, clearly.

Son is a FR at Notre Dame, Dad is an IU grad, and Brad grew up dreaming of and replicating IUBB games in his driveway. It's a done deal, what better way to honor your family than to win a championship for your home state with your son on the team and dad proud in the stands

I used to read comics as a kid, And even then I always thought Lucy pulling the football was the dumbest trope.

Now I get it…

Gotcha, at least you’re consistent.

Question: do you think we’d be better or worse this season with Dusty coaching? If we had made that change last offseason, do you think anyone on January 16 2025 would be talking about how IU did Woodson dirty and coaches would be wise to stay away?

I hear you however IU has lost the seat at the upper tier table.   IU just needs to work on getting a good coach that gets them in the conversation of competing for the top of the B1G and making second weekend tournament runs.    Worrying about finding a coach that is going win it all quickly or within the first couple of years isn’t likely to happen.  Find a great college basketball lifer that brings back pride and gives fans a chance to watch their team in the second week of the tourney and compete for B1G titles then worry about getting the seat back at the table with the true contenders later.   IU has to grind now just like any other program fighting to get to the top

I, as an impatient fan, don’t love this strategy. But it is valid and maybe even desirable. It’s kind of what ND football had to do with Kelly to get where they are now. It took a while and several steps to turn that ship around.
