Fire Coach Woodson Thread

But don't forget that both TJD and Race were headed out the door when Archie was fired. Woodson and staff convinced them to come back. Both improved their games afterwards.

We stopped crediting Crean with the individual work ethic of certain players.  No reason Woodson should get to take credit.

Left to his own devices without NIL, I’m not sure Mike Woodson would be able to recruit effectively enough to even field a team.

They wanna talk to Mike Woodson then they have to come to Mike Woodson*

But it appears that, at least on some levels, they've settled for trading the long-term death spiral of the basketball program for some (yet to be determined) level of success with football.

I think football will become the number one sport at iu no question. I think the kings boosters buddies are just fine winning 20 games and maybe winning one in the ncaa. They want access to the king. I fear we are stuck with the king until the king says he is done. Patrick Ewing is a worse coach then the king and he got 6 years. Former players are hard to fire.

One aspect in our (fans that want consistently good basketball) favor is his age. He'll be 67 in March.

And both are inside players.

How many guards has Woodson “developed “?

TJD himself has repeatedly credited Woody , while TJD was at IU and after, with developing him while never mentioning Archie so this is one of the few things in which I would give Woody credit.

TJD & Ware got better, Ballo is looking better etc. but the unfortunate thing is that all three of those guys are “5’s” and there happens to be 4 additional spots, which have not thrived, on the floor.

Yea of all my gripes for Woody developing big men isn’t one of them. All of them have gotten better. Now an argument for Malik’s defense and fouling being still atrocious in year three can be made, but his antiquated defense is responsible for a lot of that and causing guys already out position being switched down. Better teams exploit this constantly putting MR on a 3 or MM on 2. Offensively Woody has gotten a lot out of guys. Ware was considered a bust of a 5* before IU and completely rehabilitated how NBA types viewed him and as a result got drafted.

I think winning  20 games and getting a win in the tourney is the worst case scenario for the program.

I have never wanted IU to lose, in anything, but this year I hope the team makes it to the Elite 8/FF (not holding my breath) or doesn’t make the tourney at all.
Missing the tourney would hopefully lead to Woody being fired while an Elite 8 would give him the “Mike Woodson came and did the job” excuse to retire. In either case he would be gone.

But….win 20 and one game in the tourney and he might get another year.

Oh I'm convinced he will be brought back if he wins 20 games and gets in. His donor buddies would pony up again. I give him almost no chance of an elite 8. The ncaa tourney is usually a guards game which the king does not thrive in at all.

His donor buddies could buy him he Globetrotters and it wouldn't matter, he'd still underachieve.

Yep,

Thats why I said that 20 wins and one tourney victory is the worst possible outcome.

That was the first year of NIL.  We paid them, which wasn't everything, but it helped.

Yep highly doubt they stayed without Nil. Nil is the best thing that ever happened to Woodson

He's got 2 years left on his contract after this. With the transfer portal and players not being tied down to certain places like they once were, it's no longer important to have a coach under contract for a long time. But letting him get into the final two years, especially at his age, indicates uncertainty about how much longer he plans to coach, or if we even want him here. So we'd probably need to address that by either extending or "firing" him. After what we've witnessed with football, I think it would be almost impossible for Dolson to justify an extension without a pretty remarkable tournament run.

TJD wasn't going anyway else. The NBA didn't want him at that point and he wasn't going to make more money elsewhere.

Sure, congrats on keeping TDJ, but the other options weren't great for him.

Regarding Race, he seems like a nice person and I totally appreciate the effort he displayed on the court; however, IU would have been better served if Woodson didn't try to play them together. Race could have backed up TJD or transferred to Minnesota. Either would have been preferable to how Woodson rolled them out together. Race is a great example of the folly of Woodson--trying to make Race into something he wasn't foe wo years instead of adjusting to the modern game.

Deaf ears. I've tried to make this point before a few times but it falls on deaf ears around here. I just don't see how they keep him without an extension and to get that extension there has to be a good reason to give it. The 20 wins and squeaking into the tournament isn't that.

That is probably news to TJD as he has often, and consistently, stated he was leaving IU  but the meeting with Woody and his father  changed his mind.

As far as him getting cash…..he would have received the same amount at a Kansas/SEC type of school.

In regards to Race. Agree on all points.
