Fire Coach Woodson Thread

It’s absolutely crazy that he would even have a buyout. I get why there are buyouts but no one was going to try poach Woody. If I was a big donor that was a part of getting rid of Archie and ended up with Woody, I would be pressing charges and file a civil suit against the university.

That does seem perplexing!  Why have a buyout that nobody wanted?  Chalk that up as another stupid and boneheaded move on the administration.

I agree the thought of someone “buying out” Woody to another program is ridiculous.

But without the benefit of having read a lot of these contracts, my guess is that they act more as liquidated damages clauses making the cost of firing a coach so prohibitive that they essentially guarantee a certain amount of time, but then giving the university an out after a certain period. It’s likely the reason these things are always renegotiated well before they are up in strict terms of years.

That doesn’t alleviate the stupidity of last year’s raise and extension, though. That was Dolson guaranteeing Woody 4 (or maybe 5) years. One of the many reasons I find it hard to believe he would be gone in a couple weeks.

If that is true, that is pretty bad. Definitely makes a bad impression on our program if that happened.
It happened! It was well documented in this thread! We were a no show

I would hope some of the folks fuming are in the administration. Recruiting is the lifeblood of a program, unless they know 100% they won't be back they should've been there. Completely inexcusable if there's any chance of the staff being back.

I am sure Woodson wanted a buyout so he wasn’t fired at random.  Look at how it might help save him this year.

True. But as his lack of effort continues to permeate this program I would hope at least a few of the administrative powers are in the "no amount of money" territory. No-showing on the recruiting trail, especially given the current state of things, is egregious.

Million in nil, multiple 5 stars, and not even close to making the tournament with a pretty much barren recruiting pipeline for the future and an unwillingness to add to it and the fact that there’s even a chance we don’t do anything about this is just sad. Another match with IU irrelevancy.

Also if you’re anti Pearl because he’s “too dirty” that’s fine but don’t say you want a proven college winner or have any sort of desire to be elite again because all those guys are “dirty” too.

Nothing like doubling down on your stupidity with extension and increased buy out.  Woody should give half to TJD since he is the reason we made the tournament the past two years.

It sounds like the classic HR putting an employee on a PIP. Rarely does the PIP work to the advantage of the employee.

Because I don't know would you put a coach on PIP with 4 games left and then fire him? Doesn't seem like much time to improve. Not sure I understand the whole thing

That was my flimsy analogy to suggest that maybe Woodson is already a dead man walking.  I've seen several times over the years if an employee is placed on a PIP, then their fate is doomed and that it's merely a documentation tool to CYA.  Just spit-balling that maybe Dolson is doing the same thing.  Covering bases.

You are correct. Buyouts essentially act as a way to guarantee a coach time and also act as a pre-negotiated severance package. I think that it is interesting that Bruce Pearl actually has two buyout clauses in his contract. One is a coach's buyout that acts like an opt out and the other is a university buyout that acts like a guarantee of time and a severance package. The coach's buyout is much lower than the university buyout, which is why there was initially confusion on the buyout total for BP. Why would you negotiate a lower buyout for your opt out if you intended for your contract to act as a lifetime contract?

Back to coaching stuff, sorry for distracting thread.

The thing that confuses with the coach situation is that multiple people (Rabjohns, Trilly, etc.) have said Pearl would be interested in the IU job. So it shouldn’t be a conversation, just go get the guy because it creates a better winning environment and he is a coach that would win a lot at IU

I think we're working through that. But it can be done right now with both of us still having games to play.

Agreed.  The buyout just seemed to guarantee arrogance and laziness.

Woody's post game interviews are going to even more interesting these next 4 games. Pretty soon he will be reading from note cards when interviewed and only answering questions from certain reporters but not everyone.

It will be interesting if anything changes good or bad if he is feeling the pressure. But I don't think it changes anything with him being the coach or not next year

Hey guys, long time reader. First time poster. Use to read all the time but got away from it, but thought the misery we are in as IU fans, what better time then now to start.

it truly seems like there is just too much smoke around the situation for Woody not to be let go. I am on Trilly’s discord and I took his post as Dolson laying out to Woody the situation and figuring out the best way to let Woody go, but maybe I am being too optimistic that that is what happened.

Welcome aboard.  Hope you enjoy the calm, well-reasoned, thoughtful insight that btb offers  lol      Glad to have you join and hope you become a frequent poster.

Forgive me if it's already been mentioned, but what is BP's current buyout? I read 17M as of April 1 2023 but didn't know if there were any additional details on that.

Believe it is actually around 8 - 8.5million
