I seem to remember that later it was reported or rumored that the AD nixed it.  It seemed implied that it was bad form to poach a signed recruit.  But maybe I interpreted it incorrectly and it had more of your slant about existing players still had those slots.  So we had Josh Newkirk.

Well, back to my original questions: Will Coach Cignetti bring those recruits signed originally with JM and/or transfer portal entries?

Really curious how much money the NIL collectives have raised since the Cignetti announcement… 

Just eyeballing it, it looks like at a minimum around ~200k but could be way higher. Would love to try to get the total NIL figure between $4-5 million

I highly doubt every JMU recruit or even most of them are quality enough to play in the Big Ten, but I could definitely see him bringing a few, and I’m sure he’ll be active recruiting some current players that he thinks can make the jump with him

I also wonder.  But since Indiana is marketing IU football right now....

They may be receiving offers that are slightly bigger than what the average fan would chip in for.

And with those come some special requests...and some may be off that list.

I’ll answer this the best I can.

 Fred Glass signed the last Adidas deal through his buddy and fellow IU alum who is a VP at Adidas. At the time it provided us with the most up front cash and presumably more $ than Nike. At the time it was one of the largest, because at this point a lot of schools were dropping adidas like third period French and Adidas wanted to keep their remaining premier schools (Michigan dropped the contract and moved to Jordan and we should have done the same IMO)

Although it was the most up front cash, fans speculate that it was a short term gain for a long term loss for two reasons

1 : poor apparel sales directly related to Adidas not selling anything the fan base would like to buy - see the daily student article blasting adidas for doing team issue only apparel that the fan base can’t buy. I believe IU gets a royalty for everything sold. And so even if IU got less money up front from Nike, they could get more money from the royalty portion. If you Don’t believe me, go to any Nike schools website and there’s pages on pages of apparel whereas the adidas schools are limited… also Iu isn’t even a tier 1 adidas school (at least in football). So an adidas school like Washington gets these new technology football jerseys etc, and IU gets their bottom tier technology from years ago, which makes it look like a jersey from Walmart. (Also IMO our basketball uniforms don’t fit, they come untucked a lot and kids are rolling their shorts up 1-2)

 

2. Brands play an important role in recruiting and it’s speculated that Adidas hasn’t helped us get top basketball talent.

If you don’t believe me, go to any high school or youth basketball pick up game, it will be 90% Nike gear, and maybe 10% Steph curry/under armour, and maybe 1% Adidas - meaning people are voting with their wallets and Adidas is not what kids want to wear

It has been pointed out by fans who went to the Kansas game that there are serious issues with adidas at IU and our apparel in general, which have given rise to the success of companies like homefield (not a bad thing)

There are a good handful that are and we currently have some commits that got offers from JMU. And if today's JMU team were in the conference they wouldn't be in last place, like us. Coach Cig is known for developing his players so personally, I'll take whoever we can get on the roster from that team.

This is why I'm not worried that he hasn't be a HC at a P5 school before. He learned what it takes from the best in the business. I'm guessing we won't hear that IU practices are like a joke from HS anymore. From the IndyStar article:

“What I learned from (Alabama's) Nick (Saban) was really how to run a ‘gram,” Cignetti said to pff.com. “The organization and leadership standpoint, the way he treated his day in season, the way we practiced, the way recruiting was organized. The way he led staff and players and the way he led the message he crafted. It was sort of a doctoral program on how to be a head coach.”

 That article also talks about he isn't set in his ways and will adjust as needed to get the most from what he has. Some of his teams depended more on defense, others on offense, while others were more balanced. Sometimes the offense was pass heavy, other times run heavy. It's not always the same thing but he makes it what it needs to be in order to win rather than trying to force something that doesn't work.

In my opinion, that's his secret sauce of his winning. If Sorsby sticks around it'll be the best decision he'll ever make for his future. If he doesn't, Coach Cig will develop the next man up that earns the job. Again, just my opinion.

That part about adjusting is partly why I shared. He has a preference but ultimately he adjusts to the personnel he has and tries to put them in the best position.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself but I won't be surprised if IUFB wins at least six games next year. In fact, I kind of expect it to be honest. I won't even be too surprised if we actually have an above .500 record. 

I have them winning all 3 of the non-conference games. And 3 conference games with 2 to 3 toss ups.

There's a caveat though, it also won't surprise me if we just end up being IUFB that we all know and continue to cheer for regardless of how much misery we endure.

I’ll comment more after our transfer portal haul, but with a decent coaching staff this years team had a good chance of finding 6 wins, I definitely think Cignetti has a shot at it.

My thoughts exactly. We weren't too far off to get 6 wins in the grand scheme of things. We actually weren't too far off to get 7.

He was a James Madison commit but 247 lists offers from Boston College, Penn State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest so there was at least some bigger program interest.
