Why do folks think that Vonleh shut it down?

There’s some Mandela Effect going on with Vonleh because I would’ve bet a lot of money that he shut it down that season. And I was even at the BTT game against Illinois where he played. So weird.

Obviously he didn’t, but I do remember something about a foot injury late that season. It must have just been something like Ware, in that he’s hurt and some assume he’ll be done. Funny enough, that team was eerily similar to this one.

Yeah he had a foot injury, missed two games toward the end of the regular season, and then played the last two games.

Talk about a team full of knuckleheads. Vonleh was nice from the times I met him, though.

I believe it was only one game Vonleh sat out, much to the dismay of fans. A lot of fans speculated that he was preserving his draft stock.

Going off memory here, but I think it was an Ohio State home game and Hanner Perea played pretty well, indicating he'd be ready to shoulder more minutes in the future front court when Vonleh left.

Ha.

Ha.

Hanner didn't even start that game. Hartman and Williams started at the 4 and 5. Along with Yogi, Sheehey and maybe Gordon.

Edit: Starters that game were Yogi, Sheehey, Williams, Etheringron, Hollowell

I remember going to watch hanner play aau along with the movement. They actually got beat by a team of small white guys from Wisconsin and a smaller guard who went to whitcha state. Hanner was not impressive. Dunks is all he had. I was stunned he was ranked a five star at the time.

Apparently the door hasn't totally been closed on Davis.  Raby reports Coach Ya watched him last Thursday.

What I like about this coaching staff is their decisiveness when it comes to recruiting. It really gives the impression they know exactly what they're looking for.

2 things: 1) They've missed on kids, but I'm not really sure what situations could be fairly described as indecision. Are you talking about about Braden Smith? They may have gotten him wrong, though they already had Hood-Schifino committed and they were never offering him. Maybe Fland, though indecisiveness feels like an imprecise description of how that went.  Who am I forgetting? 2) Davis de-committed 2 1/2 months ago and has received exactly 1 new offer. It's not his game, so there's obviously something keeping not just Woody, but everyone else at arm's length. If anything, them continuing to keep in touch would indicate that they're trying to figure out a way through whatever it might be.

Exactly - lot of narratives recently
I see this one is pretty straight forward. He would come here in easily if we wanted him. There is some expectations on playing time, comp etc from his side that many don’t feel is warranted. Woody is probably trying to be diligent while also knowing he really doesn’t need to see him much more personally.
Put it this way for all the expert recruiters out there saying Woody is doing it all wrong. Needs guards. Run don’t walk to this kid. Would you take a kid who expects to start day one? You think he is that good? Have you even watched him? The answer is he is a very solid PG but doesn’t move the needle and fans would be very upset if he was the starter next year and not a portal guy. Then the same fans complaining about no guards would be complaining he is the starter. But that is what he is wanting and $.
So, the staff stays at arms length and waits. I think they would take him tomorrow if they thought he would accept his role and not be an issue. Would be willing to compete and grow while they go get an upper class transfer.
Personal opinion but really feels like many fans don’t understand how different things are today.

I believe this is likely the scenario. And I’m perfectly fine with them handling the situation this way.

HOWEVER we are partly in the mess we are in because they projected Galloway and and X to be great guards and didn’t actively recruit better ones effectively because they misevaluated their own talent. They failed, no matter how you want to slice it.

I like that they have high standards on players and try to understand player desires.

They failed in roster construction so epically this season they lose the benefit of the doubt. Who cares about this particular kid?

Just get a roster ready through portal and development that is ready to rock n roll in the fall.

Just to your comment that Woody didn't actively recruit guards, I've heard that IU did really try to get more guards from the portal last spring. One of the major issues was many of the guards were turned off by having X and Trey--two starters--return.

Trilly did allude to this. Guy seems to be pretty plugged in to these sorts of things.

Yes, that my point. It’s Woody’s job to determine if those guys are inadequate. Then recruit over them if need be, He didn’t. They are. He made the mistake of trusting and overevaluating his guys.
Woody’s sales pitch was predetermined that X and Gallo were starters. And THAT changes everything.

Including overevaluating his bench guards to boot. Gunn and Cupps aren’t backup guards are a top 10 team. Unless they play 3 minutes a game.

He fumbled everything with the guards and therefore his recruiting efforts where hamstrung from the get go and his recruiting pitch was never what it should have been.

“Actively recruit better guards effectively”.

My point made above means his misevaluation of All his existing guards lead to a terrible recruiting effort because he already presumed his starters.

Potential recruits are only scared of X and Gallo if the coach gives them a reason to be.

No stud guard was scared of our very mediocre returning guards lol. Be for real here. If Woody couldn’t bring any in then that’s a salesman problem.

Caleb Love is averaging 19 a game on the #8 team in the country. Wouldn’t have wanted Woody to promise him a starting job, though. Heavens no. The guys we have are much better.

Iirc, the problem with love’s recruitment wasn’t that he wanted a starting spot, it was that he wanted full discretion to do what ever he wanted on offense.

He is working out well for Arizona, but just based off his previous year at UNC that would have been a very stupid thing to promise him and a lot of fans would have lost their minds if that happened.

Caleb Love is exactly what this team needs and is missing. There likely wouldn’t be any fire Woodson chatter in that case because the season would look drastically different. But Woodson’s stubbornness got in the way. Sure it would’ve been a gamble. But you won’t hit many home runs if you refuse to swing for the fences.

It's Indiana, we lay down a bunt and wonder why we were thrown out at 1st.
