Michigan’s transfer policies relevant to this recruitment (and Terrence Shannon, etc.) are explained here: https://mgoblog.com/content/exit-he-arrived-caleb-love

Best to not besmirch the student here, I think. And no, not a bad look for IU to take credits UM doesn’t take.

Only someone who is more concerned about IU's athletic performance than their academic reputation would say this.

If you're going to back and forth with me, DO NOT quote and attribute posts to me that I did not post!

I'm going to attribute that to 'an unfortunate mis-placed cut and paste' from you, but that is some weak stuff.

I'm sure IU is checking in on him. But if he wants the ball in his hands all the time then we will pass. But if he wants to fit into what we're doing then I could see us taking a chance. I'm not sure if he is a good fit or not but I'll let the staff make that decision.

I turn 47 tomorrow so I'm accepting free beer all weekend long if anyone wants to donate. Lots of watching golf, enjoying the outdoors, and just chillin'

Those are my concerns too!  IU needs a shooting guard but not one who must have the ball in his hands but I will trust what CMW and staff will decide on this one

Here's where the **** up is; how in the world did Michigan Basketball take his commitment without first confirming with the university that it would be a seamless academic transfer process? Maybe I'm overstating it, but that seems to be a complete clown show by UM Basketball staff.

There's also this; I'm reading in multiple places that UM will not issue a UM degree to anyone who has more than half of their college credit hours from another institution. If that's the case, Love would have needed to give up at least one year of college credits from UNC to allow for the transfer. If he was close to graduation that would be a pretty tough pill to swallow.

Love went to a really good academic-oriented high school; it was not a sports factory high school and he graduated from there with honors. I would expect that he's a fine student.

You make some good points with Caleb. Imo, I think there’s more to the story…I have no idea what, but something just isn’t adding up.

Im with Stuhoo on this. Real tough to play the academic superiority card, but then be so disorganized that you consistently trip over this stuff. Big, nationally embarrassing headlines time after time. Feels like some quick emails to the right departments would have given a clear green or red and avoided it.

Also… I’m happy with my IU degree and all, but have no problem admitting that IU is a step or 3 below Michigan. UM simply is a prestigious academic institution. I don’t think it’s any kind of knock if IU can admit someone that UM doesn’t. As others have mentioned Live was in good academic standing at UNC, there are no red flags here.

Do I want Love on the team? UNC fans were happy to see him go. We’re already dealing with a lot of ins, a lot of ours, a lot of what have yous. So what’s one more?! Heck yes get him here if Woody wants him.

Also have a super soft birthday, guys! Pitter patter!

I think the bigger issue here is this is 2 years in a row where UM basketball program has screwed the pooch on a transfer. This will be a deterrent for future portal guys and will also be used as a negative recruiting angle from opposing recruiters. Bad on UMBB to essentially waste what would be a good opportunity for player at another school because you hadn't done your due diligence. Took them a month? How many other opportunities have come and gone for CL since then?

Don't forget about Papa Kante. Committed to Michigan, signed his LOI in November of 2022 and then decommitted in April of 23... Because of admissions. 6-10 center that was 103rd in the 247Sports Composite. Took an official to Georgia Tech two days ago.

This is the second year in a row this has happened. The dynamics and the order of events are the same:

  1. Juwan Howard and staff recruits a player and establishes serious interest.
  2. Player confirms that he is approved by Michigan admissions as a student in good standing and commits.
  3. Admissions' confirmation is not the same as credits transferring - each academic department hasn't weighed in as to whether they'll accept the credits.
  4. Player finds out that while they are admitted, many of their college credits will not transfer.
  5. Player de-commits.

How so?

That is my assessment, everyone seems to blame Davis for UNC's underperformance, but I think that Love has tanked a couple talented teams because he's selfish. 2 seasons ago UNC scuffled through most of the schedule, then he got hot at the end of the year and took them to NC game. This past year they return to underperforming with a talented team, and miss the NCAA's. All the while Love continues hoisting shots (15 per game this past season) despite being a career 36% FG shooter and 31.7% 3pt shooter. So I guess it is Davis' fault, he shoulda benched Love. He seems like a punk to me and I don't like anything about him.

I guess best case scenario Love is a crappy, crappy shooter (that still took 7.5 3's a game) but has enough talent to get hot and win a game for you--when he's not losing them. Worst case? his selfish play and attitude derail a talented young team and ruin the season.

He's Tamar Bates with a quicker first step. Don't believe me? Their per 40mins are pretty close.

TL/DR summary: everyone remembers he got UNC to the NC game. No one recalls that he's often below average the other 2.5 seasons

His stats tell a story: he isn’t efficient and he’s a ball hog. Why would we want a ball hog who isn’t good at shooting?

I think it would be a mistake to bring him in based off of what we’ve seen from his prior 3 years in college basketball. That’s not a small sample size. We know what he does on the basketball court in college.
