NW made JHS toss a lob off the backboard? They guarded those FTs extremely well in the first half? They made Gallo throw that pass over Race's head when they weren't near him? They made TJD dribble off his leg when the defender was on the other side of him? (and then giggle about another TO, where have we seen that before..?)

Life on the road in the Big 1.o is difficult, that much more when they're not at the bottom half of the league. You control what you can control (i.e. not tossing it all over the gym, hitting your free throws, making sure your opponent isn't WIDE OPEN)

Paraphrasing here - you know you'll get open looks against Indiana because they have their weak side defender on the nail (this has been something we've done all season and it's bit us several times because our guards and small wings struggle to keep the better guards in the league in front of us.)

Give me a break you pick and choose plays but the bad reffing was a constant. First half and second bad.

Bad refereeing has been a constant but it’s been noticeably worse in recent years and 2023 is no exception. NCAA needs to do something…far too many times the refs determine the outcome and there’s no doubt this was one of those games. NW got away with practically everything. An even whistle and we win this game by ten plus points.

I'm almost certain it's a conference decision and not an NCAA decision in league play. They are getting exactly what they've designed the system to be. Hopefully we'll hear something about how the Big 1.o led the nation in attendance for the eleventy billionth time in a row soon.

And when the shoe didn't drop in 8 of the last 9 games, was it worth waiting for it?

Seems pretty silly to watch something that you are so negative about.  Sounds like a miserable point of view.

I was posting lol at least for the games I was able to watch. A few I wasn’t able too.

Step 1. Invent “facts”

Step 2.

Step 3. Act irrationally superior

What can the team or even the fans do to control that?

Accepting it doesn’t help at all. Maybe try writing the big ten. I work for the ACC and quite honestly I’m getting tired of being laughed at as a conference. Rightfully so because time and time again we see this crap and come tournament time real refs destroy all of our teams for actual fouls.

Fine write the league.  But literally the refs for this season are already determined. Nothing about bad refs excuses not trying.

ACC is a much weaker conf than the Big Ten. Do you guys blame your refs for that too?

Honestly by people just saying we control what we can control… you’re kind permitting this bad officiating  to happen again. I agree like in the Penn State game that was all on us but this one is so egregiously bad that it really did determine the outcome.

We layeth the turds consistently in the first half as we did against PSU.

Butts in the seats and eyes on the television will continue this bad officiating. I somehow don't hear anyone mentioning the calls we got though? That quick makeup call, oof. TJD's block, yea buddy!

I’m an IU undergrad and graduate. But let’s be honest with ourselves. They win more national championships.

Our bad play in the first half was pretty constant yea?

Just like the first game against NW if we play a full 40 with effort and concentration we win, probably rather easily. I get it these are young people but when you play a full 38 minutes like we did in the first game and a full half like we did in this game you're not controlling what you can control. I guess I'm picking and choosing similar to the team with their effort and concentration?

They received four free throws.  Bench technicals are Class A technicals unless it was for something like being outside of the coach's box, in which case it is a Class B.  Unsportsmanlike conduct technicals on the bench, like vulgariy or whatever, are Class A.  So the correct number of free throws (4) were shot.

Hummel specifically said it was a class A on woody and a class b on the bench. That was literally seconds after the other ref explained it to him.

Penn State was different. We didn’t try that game and deserved what came to us.  This one the Northwestern players were playing hack a TJD and nothing got called. Completely stymied any chance in this game.

So after a breath I actually feel more confident in this team after tonight. They suuuuuucckkkkkkeeeeddd in the 1st half but didn't quit. Past years this is an 18+ point loss. We're not winning the conference title but nights like tonight show you something. We fought like hell to have a chance at the end and that was with bad officiating and bad play (at times) in thw 2nd half. Win Saturday and this will be an after thought, much like Maryland/Purdue. Next week will be brutal though.

That’s never getting called in any conf in any league in that scenario. Never. Honestly the def foul isn’t either…you have to be tougher there.

Refs been swallowing their whistle in that situation since there were peach baskets hanging.

How do you be tougher when a guy barrels into you at speed with a lowered shoulder?

You're right, the team gave full effort in that first half. Every NW shot was a circus shot they just got lucky and they just absolutely mauled us the entire first half without us getting a call. They brought out that big fan that effected our FTs. Couldn't believe when they brought their managers on the court to help defend us too! Wicked crazy to see them defend so well. That football player coming out of the stands to tackle TJD was sick! Amazing we got called for a foul every time we got within 5' of them. We haven't fouled all season and this game was exactly the opposite!

We you play with the effort and concentration we did in the first half on the road in the Big 1.o you leave it up to others to decide the game. We didn't control what we could control in the first half.

Yeah, definitely a tough stretch where IU played two on the road, go home for one, and then two on the road again.  Obviously everyone plays ten home, ten road, just a strange breakdown for IU's schedule.  Having all of our double plays against the teams that have a winning record in conference this year is just a strange quirk that the unbalanced schedule can produce.  That said, it does provide more opportunities to

In terms of seeding in the conference tournament, IU will actually be better off if Northwestern continues to win because getting into multiple team ties with Northwestern involved likely pushes IU to the bottom of that group.

It’s not always about effort man sometimes you get hosed. More often than not it’s about effort but this is exception to a norm. It was by far the worst reffed game I’ve seen this season. I gotta wake up at 5 so I’m going to bed.
