It’s a great question. I honestly don’t know what my answer is. I think we are just a not very good team. It’s been evident in every win, and more so the in big losses. Sometimes not very good teams get up for big games at home. I think it’s far more likely that our not very good team got up for a big home game on Saturday than it is that we showed promise of the team we can be on Saturday. We’ll probably get up for some other big games at home this season. But I don’t see this team having the ability to build a tournament resume from here on out.  I really hope I’m wrong.

Except for X, they’re 18-20 year old kids.  They do what kids do — up and down emotionally.  These guys clearly play down to their competition.  Thus, they come out flat.  Need to develop that killer crush em, take no prisoners, instinct.

I don't think any of us on the normal thinking end are saying give Woodson a lifetime contract. But he signed a 6-year deal to bridge us to the next coach. We're not halfway through it, he's done everything we have asked him to do and still, you have "fans" wanting him fired.

I think we found out with the football job, that Dolson had a list, knew what he was looking for, and went after it. I'm sure it's the same with basketball.

8-3 Go Hoosiers

I agree. I don’t think most fans are truly looking for IU to cut ties with Woody right away. What I believe to be true is that fans are concerned that we are headed back in the wrong direction and that if he is not able to right the ship, this whole bridge process will have been for not and we will be handing off the program to the next coach in the same fashion it was left for Archie and then for Woody.

we need to hand it off when we are winning/making the tourney every year and many fans are concerned we will not this year and that next year could be even worse

I'm sure some fans do think that and if that ends up being the case you all will come back to tell everyone that you were correct just like with Archie.

I personally am nowhere near there right now. I think are people making assumptions about this season and next without letting it play out. If people want our new coach to be Dusty, Lewis or Micah they will all still be there if this ship does go down.

Also, do we need another buyout? I know most people love to spend other people's money but we don't have an ATM in the athletic office.

Rant:  I preferred the rant thread when the rants focused on things outside of basketball.  This might as well be a game thread.

In fairness last night provided much to rant about.

I'll try changing the subject with a moderate rant. I think people lose about 10% of their IQ every day starting a week before Christmas. The way they drive, alternating between racing around or creeping along. Then wander the stores drenched in sweat with a wild look of desperation in their eyes. I love Christmas, but CALM THE FRICK DOWN. It's all gonna be ok, but seems some people need to be slapped back to their senses.

Do they play down to the competition or are they just closer to these mid major teams than we'd like to think? 2 big OOC games away from home we got destroyed like a mid major would.

We’re pretty much saying the same thing. Except you and I both know the last couple years on a contract are limbo-land and never get played out. There will be talk of  “how can you recruit without an extension.” That’s not IU-specific, it is everywhere (and there is some truth to it).   Even if we want him to coach at till year 6, they’ll have to come up with some sort of extension and plan moving forward.

So really you’re talking about future planning in years 3-5. Granted, we are just entering into that phase. But that’s specifically what I’ve been discussing.  We don’t normally have these discussions because we bring in a guy in his 30-50’s and hope he’ll be here a decade-plus. We’ll see what Dolson is made of the next few years.

Fwiw, I’ve said from the beginning that if Woody comes in and gets us back to the tourney consistently and recruits well, that would be a success to me. A lot of that is predicted on where we were and his age—he was always going to be a bridge the gap guy.

As a team, it seems to be the latter. It shouldn't be that way but they aren't playing well as a team. Right now the team is less than the sum of its parts, which is frustrating.

I'm just wondering what (if any) Woodson's exit strategy is. Is he thinking of getting it decent shape over the next year or two then retiring, is he thinking he'll be coaching for another 10 years, or is he not planning anything and thinks he'll coach until he's tired of it and/or gets fired?

Ideally, it would be getting the program into good shape then stepping down but I don't know if ego would allow that.

Just means that they are no where near a top 3 seed quality team.  UConn and Auburn are projected 2 and 3 seeds so I would say yes IU is closer to the mid major teams than they are those top teams.    IU hasn’t really played an average tournament quality team yet.    Mid major teams are closer to average high major teams especially with the extra COVID year.   I believe Morehead started 4 or 5 guys in their 5th year of college

Not fired but if things start going downhill he should step aside before it gets to ugly. He has to make the tourney this year period. Missing it would be a big step backwards.

Would be real nice to secure DQ and a big time PG. so even if we are down this year we can see that his recruiting strategy is paying off.

This and an actual shooting guard.  I will say this that we do this and retain Mgbako it could be our first time in like forever that we have  a team that has quality and depth with no gaping holes.  This year to me is about development. I want Cupps to be able to shoot a jumper by the end of the year.  Also need Banks to get more comfortable and in control of his actions.

More ranting. Hey Cop, why are you hiding behind a bush at the bottom of the long hill, so you can pull people over going 45 in 35 mph zone at the bottom of the freaking hill? You think that's policing?? Guess what Cop, you're a municipal revenue raiser, congratulations on your promotion.

People need to realize program building takes time. Every time you fire and hire somebody new the process starts over again. We're not Kansas, UNC, or Kentucky and that's just reality, even if we like to compare ourselves to them. The program was gutted, then gutted again. The thing this program needs more than anything is stability and a foundation. It's hard. I understand fans are impatient but a coaching carousel only delays good fortune. No matter who the coach is, it takes time to build a base and to get stuff really rolling, and I know people don't want to hear it but again it's reality. Here's a few examples of coaches, all who have been called sure fire winners in this thread, brought in to build programs before they started to get things rolling. Will Woody ever win a national championship? Hell I don't know, but he's gotta have the time to be able to do it. We need to get old and stay old and we can't do that by giving up on coaches, giving up on sophomores and giving up on teams in December.
