Most Obscure IUBB Scholarship Player

Recommended Posts

Don Noort. I know that I am not the first to submit his name but I feel the need reinforce the sentiment.

Remember a game where he was the recipient of a long fast break outlet pass under the bucket with no defender within 10 feet of him and rather than go up and lay it in he felt the need to pump fake his invisible defender and by the time he went up to lay it in his real defender had arrived on the scene and swatted his shot.

A kegger party at my Walnut Knolls apartment in play here too but want to stay on topic.

I’ve been saving this one. There are lots of “one year or less and gone” players in this thread. But it’s hard to be a truly obscure true Hoosier if you were not a Hoosier for very long.

But there’s one obscure IU player who was on scholarship all four years, never redshirted, and in 130 Indiana games over those four years played a total of 223 minutes. That’s a four year average of about 1.75 minutes per game.

The only four year guy with significantly lower court time is Vanilla Prilla, and he was a folk hero and arguably far less obscure.

You’d think the guy I’m talking about would have played more! His numbers were 55% fg, 52% 3pt, 82% ft.

The most “present” yet obscure player?

Mike Miday

I thought about him, too. Deserves special recognition for being the 1st guy I remember to transfer because he flat out said he didn’t like RMK yelling at him.

Phelps Darby, Ernest Strange, Jay Fitzgerald, Alvah Rucker, Charles Unnewehr, and/or these others:

Indiana University Basketball Encyclopedia - Jason Hiner - Google Books

Scroll one page down for the picture and caption.  I looked in the first 30 or so years of Indiana University basketball and nowhere did it say anything about scholarship players.  A great read about the beginnings of IU and B1G basketball.

Just think of the times, trials, travels, wars, teaching a new game...

Yeah - Miday didn’t last 4 years. He’s the one who came to practice with long hair a Knight told him to go get a haircut before he could come back. Miday retorted that Jesus had long hair. Knight escorted Miday to Royer pool and told him if he could walk across the pool he could keep his long hair. LOL

Went to a game with a friend that Oliphant/Patterson and L&N played at Owen Valley. Owen Valley had a really good team, the gym was absolutely stuffed and the atmosphere was one of the best I’ve ever been part of. Owen Valley won it by a couple after Patterson missed a shot to tie it.
