If you lose to Rutgers this week and subsequently go 1-fer in conference this year after 0-fer last year, the buyout starts looking smaller and smaller to the AD. I wouldn’t put money on it, but 2-10 > 3-9 (1-17 B1G) is as bad of a 2-year stretch the program has had in…20 years? That’s fireable. With a little help and some creative accounting, it could be doable.

Unless CTA somehow turns it around, his contract is gonna set this program back for years (set it back from what, I'm not exactly sure).

But the earliest he can be fired and we wouldn't owe him the remainder of his contract would be after the 2024 season. That's this season, plus two more.

And even then, we'd owe him about $7.5M. Is that doable? I'm not sure. We had to get donors to pony up for Archie's buyout, which I believe was about $10M. Do our fat-cat boosters care enough about football? Again, I'm not sure. I know COVID helped empty our piggy bank; I would have no  idea if we'd be in a better financial position three years from now or not.

I guess there's always the possibility if things get even worse than they are now (which would be winless seasons, I suppose), Allen would agree to a lesser buyout -- although if I were him, I wouldn't!

I wanna like Dolson, but he showed horribly poor judgment with that extension.

Here is the real question, if IU is willing to throw some real money at a top coach, would they stay and build the program, or just wait for the first chance to jump up the ladder? CTA was worth the risk when he was hired because he seemed like a guy that was committed to the University, he had a connection, so it was more than just another coaching job to him. Unfortunately, the program just isn't taking the next step, we are somewhat competitive, our defense is pretty decent at times, but we are not considerably better, if we are better at all than when he was hired!

If you get lucky and hire some up and coming young coach, he's not going to stay. You have two choices, throw some serious money at a top proven winner and lock him in for 5-7 years (I think IU is too cheap to go this route) or keep CTA and try to improve the staff around him...IU needs better recruiting and better talent assessment. Finally, CTA has had some bad luck with injuries....if Penix could have stayed healthy IU would be much better and been able to recruit better players! Just my opinion, but I don't hate Allen and I am not convinced Indiana is willing to do what it takes to do much better!

Bring back Gerry DiNardo?

This thing going to hell does make me wonder what type of coach succeeds here. Allen is similar to Hep who was similar to Mallory. Maybe we go to a more established/qualified version of Allen when the time comes? I have no clue who fits that description.

A young guy uses the job as a springboard and you probably aren’t getting a successful/established older guy unless Dolson decides to fund the program. This stinks.

Established successful coaches go to OSU, ND usually, Michigan, LSU, Clemson, Bama etc etc etc…Not IU.  Though I suppose Mark Cuban type money could buy about anything.  Realistically, just asking T. Allen to play 500 ball including non conference schedule.  That would be better than any sustained time in IU football history.

And with the transfer portal, anyone capable of  changing that mentality can just flee this sinking ship in the offseason. If you’re Dasan McCullough, why would you stick around next year when  a whole host of legitimate programs would take you?

Sadly, every time Dasan makes a play I wonder where he will be next year, I hope at IU ibut I wouldn’t bet on it.

Whenever they hire a new coach, they can’t have a fear about the guy “leaving us for something better if he succeeds.” In IU’s storied football history, hoe many times has that happened? People gushed and gushed about how great CTA is because he wouldn’t leave IU if he succeeded, but then the AD gave him a monstrous buyout anyway. Hire the best coach you can find. If he leaves, he leaves.

And for the love of god. whatever you do, don’t hire the guy down the hall with no head coaching experience beyond the high school level.

Sam Wyche left IU to take the Bengals' HC job.  We then hired Mallory.

You don't want Gerry Faust 2.0?

Gerry was just over .500 at ND.  We need a coach that can go .500.

How about Jason Candle of Toledo?

I never really liked the "he might leave for somewhere better argument".  1) because that means the program had some success to try and build off. 2) if no one better wants him there's probably a reason.

If Indiana wants to flip IUFB and IUBB they are going to have to spend with the big boys. IUFB, that mountain is too tall to climb. IUBB it isn’t. 2 or 3 kids a year consistently, flips a program. Football it’s 15-20 a year. Plus nothing else to sell except playing time. Although North Carolina has turned themselves respectable.

I guess, a good counter to this is Purdue this year? Idk. They aren’t that good but they are better enough to win the games we can’t. I suppose that level of success is achievable?

Purdue's 2 losses are to ranked teams.  The Boilers have a football team that I wish we had.
