We were in the gray area for sure if not more during the RMK era. Players might not have gotten money but they got lots of other services for free around town. At least one player's parent got a job they weren't qualified for. So things like that happened. Not handing over money to kids but got services for being an IU player.

I personally don't espouse to the all-or-nothing attitude. That's like saying someone who breaks a speeding law is capable of murder.

I'm not sure what you can do to stop the gray area stuff in college. I had very little info about what was happening around the program, but knew some things definitely didn't pass the eyeball test. I'm also sure that RMK knew it was happening, but as long as it wasn't going through the program, he knew he couldn't stop it (or maybe really didn't care to). I never heard of him giving those boosters any special privileges like other programs do, but like I said, I really had no inside info.

Agreed but it's a far cry from some 'grey' area stuff that is not coach/assistant-coach driven and doesn't involve paying players, etc. to the type of historical dirty-program stuff we've seen from programs like UK (the most sanctioned program ever), Louisville (oh sure, let's have IU setting up strippers for recruits), UNC (decades of fake classes, yeah, count me out), etc. 

The NCAA doesn't care stuff doesn't fly with me either. Cal left not one but two programs behind with forfeited season records, because of NCAA infractions. Of course programs have been banned from NCAA tourney play, etc. The NCAA has largely been a joke, I've been probably one of the most vocal 'haters' on the NCAA, but not because it doesn't care and ignores infractions, it's because it's been an inept, inconsistent association that has basically zero enforcement authority without the cooperation of the school involved. UNC fought tooth and nail despite all kinds of proof of its fake classes for basketball and football players, the NCAA had no actual power to do anything. It did go after Ville, however, etc. IU in contrast to the UNC's of the world self-sanctioned in the face of those silly Sampson 'phone gate' but 'major' infractions, while the NCAA went hard against Sampson because he'd escaped them when they went after Okla. 

In the 'grey' for recruiting etc., with an active compliance program, and being a dirty program are two entirely different things. Count me out of the let's play dirty mantra. We have NIL now, so most of this is irrelevant now anyway (though the lack of consistent NIL regs / requirements across the field is a problem).

Let's get extremely high-quality individuals, and let's pay them within the rules as much as possible.

I'm a major fan of the attitude, personal presentation, and basketball team attitudes of Malik Reneau and Jalen Hood-Schifino, and I'm also a big fan of them getting as much NIL as possible while at IU.

That's "having our cake and eating it too" roster construction at its finest.

True that.

Chucky Hepburn had an outstanding freshman season. But a bigger slight over X? There's an incoming senior on the All B1G team that has not notably produced in three years,

Tyler Wahl is the far bigger surprise to me here. What does he even do? Hepburn is about all they have this year, so I see him going off. He was pretty dang good down the stretch last year when Davis came back to Earth. 
 

The main issue is that there isn’t very much talent in the B1G if Tyler Wahl and Malik Hall are preseason all-conference selections.

In a full-on Bobby Knight repeat, IUBB released a practice video today in which there were exactly five players wearing red jerseys. And in a full-on Bobby Knight repeat, those five are your current IUBB starting lineup. They are:

Miller Kopp

Xavier Johnson

Early season starters aren't that big of deal to me.  I'm more interested in the starters over the last 1/3 of the season.

Barring drastic improvements from last season, we don’t really have anyone else capable of starting at that spot.

Also, if Kopp plays his best he is the perfect compliment for the starters.  If he is guarded to the point you don’t sag off of him, and he hits open shots it will allow others to flourish.  
 

Now, if he tries making the athletic plays or forces he wasn’t at his best last year doing any of that. Maybe he can do it. But last year it almost always went bad when he tried.  
 

assuming JHS starts we need him and X to be a serious threat to make the open 3.  If neither of them are, we will need to get Bates extra minutes, which we will no matter what.  
 

The dream scenario for me is throughout the season Geronimo develops the wings skills we need and he can play the 3 at times and also spell Race at the 4 at times to get him a lot of minutes.

1. Woody seems to be extremely reticent to change his starting lineup. Even when he couldn't hit the broadside of a barn toward the end of last year Parker Stewart remained in the starting lineup.
2. I'm just as interested, or more interested in who finishes games as who starts them.
3. I like Kopp a lot better with JHS in the starting lineup. With two guards on the floor that can break down the defense and draw a defensive rotation, Kopp, who is arguably our best open shooter, should get more and better looks. Last year with Parker and Kopp in the lineup together, we were stagnant and only had X to initiate.
4. If Bates was in with the starters instead of Kopp our second unit would be really light on a guy who can initiate offense. If all goes well, I would expect Bates or Geronimo to finish games and get as many minutes as Kopp, or maybe more minutes.

And, as Wayne said so kindly, if last year's version of Miller freakn' Kopp re-appears, and ever tries to makes plays off of the bounce I will continue to scream "NOOOOOOOOO" at my tv.     :)
