IU Basketball News and Notes

The Big Ten sold their media rights such that some games are on Peacock.  They did this to maximize revenue to the conference.  So really it's mostly on the B1G and the schools since they made the decision.  It's annoying for fans, but in return, IU gets more revenue, which notably helps us compete vs. schools in other conferences.

That's modern college sports for ya...

It's a double-edge sword.

We don't want the games on another streaming service we have to pay for, but the conference and the institutions (non-profit entities except for two BIG schools, not corporations) need the money to pay players, update facilities, etc. etc.

We keep feeding a model that many (the conference, institutions, fans, players) don't particularly like and don't really think is sustainable. Yet the conferences and their schools, along with other governing bodies like the NCAA, refuse to consider other models.

Definitely understand. I do appreciate that the revenue generated from these deals will allow us to be more competitive in the ever increasing arms race. Just annoyed that this means the choice of paying for a service that I would otherwise have no use for vs missing more games than I usually would.

I might have to break down and get Peacock for the winter just because of this reason.  (If the discount shows up in the next few weeks, by all means, let us know.)  The only plus might be the Winter Olympics that start in early February that should be on Peacock if any are Olympic fans.

I guess I am the old man but I do miss the days where you knew you were playing on Thursday and Saturday or Sunday. Also you knew the majority of the games were going to be on channel 4 with the great camera angles.

LOL...I'm likely about the same age as you.

It could be worse, they could be on B1G+ which is more expensive while also being vastly inferior to peacock. B1G+ might be the worst deal in streaming TV.

Yeah thats one I absolutely refuse to buy. My stubborn @$$ cant handle paying for such a garbage product.

Not all change are for the good. A lot of people cut the cord to save the money but all that did was make it easier for the sports leagues to expand their coverage. So people actually didn't really save money by cutting the cord because now you have to pay for each streaming service.

So you think it is better not being able to watch your favorite team if you don't want to pay for all of these streaming services.

I say it every year...Peacock games are the some of the highest quality broadcasts we get all season.

At least the first year I thought Peacock sucked. The home game vs Purdue kept freezing up and I was sometimes 5 or more minutes behind the game action

Right now, there is a HBO Max and Disney deal for the 2 at much cheaper than they are separate.  You have to think there will be some combo deals sooner or later just because people are sick and tired of getting all the streamers which they will subscribe and unsubscribe every couple of months to save cash.  I think we pay for 2 while my step kids will each pay for one.  These things are expensive anymore.

There are also other ways to save on streaming services. T-Mobile pays for AppleTV+ and 1/2 of my Netflix subscription. I have the Disney/Hulu/HBO bundle you mentioned (now about $33/month). I get Peacock at $20/year with the Black Friday deal they have every year, and even if you miss that there are plenty of times were I see it on sale for $25/year. I subscribe to 247 which gets me access to premium peegs.com content also saving about $3/month on Paramount+ (the main reason I subscribe).

In addition, some other things include streamer subscriptions to draw in customers. I think Walmart+ offers Paramount+. Some credit cards I think might also include subscriptions to various services. I believe other other major phone companies offer subscriptions as part of some of their plans, not just T-Mobile.

I have seen some articles stating that some of the streaming companies are in talks to make more bundles, so I believe you are correct in saying that there will be more of those in the future.

Around Black Friday last year I hopped on the Peacock deal of $19.99 for an entire year. I did it for a few basketball games but felt even better when some football was thrown in and my wife actually likes some of their shows.
Like everyone else I’m getting tired of 50 different steaming options but $19 for a year has been a good deal.

If you have xfinity internet they have a bundle deal. I have so many of these stupid subscriptions, that I swore I’d never get…

Also I’m pretty sure the peacock deal they switch the dates every year. I got it the first year and then missed it last year because I signed up to watch a football game. So you’ll have to pay attention.
