I keep hearing that our defense is subpar. Examples given are the first teams inability at times to stop second team and even managers from scoring. So while it was nice to see the clips of us scoring I have to admit to wondering how we will do vs tough D. I am hopeful that our D can be tough because the coaches will demand effort on that side of the ball. That, for me, seems to be the backbone of how much success we can have.

I totally agree that defense is a big question mark based on early reports. I also think for the team to have success, our defensive efficiency has to be at a certain level. But, I think in this era of basketball especially, if you have to pick one or the other to be better at... I'd pick offense every time. That's why I'm excited to watch this team in year 1. Need to see the team grow throughout the course of the season on both sides of the ball and I'll be over the moon about the future of IUBB.

CBS polled 100 college coaches who made the best off season hire.

McCollum lead in votes, then Will Wade, then Sean Miller.  They made up 68% of the votes.

next 3. Ryan Odom-Virginia, Buzz Williams, Niko Medved.

others receiving multiple votes. Kevin Willard, Ross Hodge, and Alex Jensen.

Wild to me.  Even as a “realist” this one is shocking.

time will tell and time will tell soon.

McCollum wasn’t even their first choice?

Well remember that Archie Miller hire was well praised and called a home run hire.

I guess that true.  Hard to really know. Parrish and Norlander polled 100 college coaches.  Could argue that all 100 are biased against DeVries and Indiana.  Maybe. Odds are he was just overlooked for whatever reason.  Previous success?  Current roster? Projected success?  I have no idea their reasoning.  I’d personally say DeVries belongs in the top 3-5 based on previous success.

It’s partly because Devries is pretty invisible to the media and has never really been a social coaching community guy.

I don’t know why I respond to you, but I do.  Archie was praised by Media.  And maybe coaches alike.  Media miss a lot. Understood. Archie was overrated, but also Archie was hamstrung with resources.  No clear mission but to recruit local players because much of the fanbase gets in a tizzy when we don’t have enough Indiana Kids. The kids he got weren’t good enough and neither was he.  Most probably assumed he’d be able to cheat like Sean did at Arizona and have similar success. I did. But then again, Indiana wasn’t gonna have that at that time. (Thank Adidas for Romeo). Relationship has fizzled since. IF Archie had Woodson’s last 2 years advantages?  Maybe?

Also, this is a coaches poll, not media.  See my post above.

Iowas fans and message boards had DeVries as their top choice and was convinced he was going to Iowa.   Iowas premium boards Rabby had DeVries has their top choice on their hot board 1.0.   Then DeVries told them no thanks so they moved on to their next choice.   I’m sure it will all work out for them in the long run however DeVries was their top choice and definitely iowas keyboard warriors on message boards first choice

Maybe. McCollum is the new media darling.  Is that why he won the college coaches poll?  Because they are listening to media?  That’s pretty lame if coaches are relying on the media for their opinion, but that could be the case.

Overlooked coach that grinded in D2 with crazy success for as long as he did.  Coaches poll dream when one of their own grinders gets a chance at a major program

Yeah, could be.  What do keyboard warriors really know?   Makes sense to me DeVries would at least be on par with McCollum on a search.  That’s additionally why the college coaches poll results are shocking.

Really hope we are good enough to put some respect back on Indiana’s name soon. We’ve drifted ever so far.

I know you like to look at things through the pessimistic side of things and will see what you want to see. I was just saying these polls are worthless

I guess. All the new coaches have grinded their entire career.  They didn’t poll D2 coaches.

Not entirely worthless.  It’s a definitive glimpse behind the scenes on what people (college coaches) think.  Does that impact winning. Not necessarily. But also not worthless.  PR and momentum is a thing.  To ignore it’s not is missing part of the equation.

He's going to be the next Bo Ryan or the next Ray Harper.  I'm very happy with DeVries but I probably would've rolled the dice on McCollum.

Heard from more than a few reports that when he’s out on the trail, Devries keeps to himself and doesn’t chop it up with his peers.
