Too many anti IU roots posters on here. Must be from PU not wanting to show up Painter.
Sad.

Quite the opposite actually. We love IU so much we are willing to scream as loud as we have to In order to save ourselves from the it has to be an IU guy thought process.

As Demo said (his point #3) if there were an IU guy who didn’t require you to stretch your criterion beyond recognition, he’d already have the job. But there isn’t.

I have to say the "studied under a master line" rings hollow to me.  How many of RMK's assistants at IU ever did anything as head coaches?

Back in 2016 RMK was ranked 2nd for this very thing

https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2654360-ranking-the-best-coaching-trees-in-college-basketball-history.amp.html

Now you may not recognize some of the names but he also had his peak 20 years ago. Still, his coaching tree was one of the best.

Maybe we should just hire Chris Beard instead. Oh wait...

NFL and college teams hire top assistants all the time. Michigan State has been the best program in the Big Ten for 20 years. Dane Fife helped build the MSU culture - including recruiting. Let's duplicate that here. He was at IU during Knights firing and instead of transferring helped lead us to the national title game. I actually think Fife would be a great hire for any Big Ten team.

I have no idea if Fife is the best candidate but I made the same point. The NFL goes with the assistant coach to HC route all the time. Sometimes they even skip the OC or DC assistants and hire special teams assistants like Harbaugh.

I would try to get an established P5 guy first but we may have to build our own guy here.  Fife has been ranked one of the top HC prospects the last couple years. If the P5 guys are not good fits I prefer Fife with Lewis and a older coach and a strong player development program. Spend money on proven assistants and if Fife is a great leader he should be considered.

Mostly a given that it's Brian Dutcher's to have.

Just sayin he can be a B1G head coach, just isn't the right time for IU to hire him. Assistant sure.

This is why I'm not totally opposed to Beilein. Hire JB, bring Fife, and Michael Lewis if you can and let one of them have the job in 4-5 years when John retires. We could do worse.

I would absolutely root like hell for either Fife or Lewis and hope that we found our basketball Tom Allen.

Though I think Fife would be a good hire for them....Minnesota is looking for guys who have ties to the state. Article in the Star Tribune yesterday about a former Timberwolves coach who is interested. Fife has ties to our state. He already recruits in Indiana. The notion that blue blood programs only hire other established experienced "can't miss" coaches is just not correct. UCLA just hired from Cincinnati and before that from New Mexico. Fife is a unique situation for Indiana....the top assistant for the league's best program who just happens to be an IU grad.

I've heard that a lot and I would personally would love it for Fife to be a coach in waiting type of thing, but wouldn't that be a lateral move, if not a step backward, for him going from Michigan St and possible coach in waiting there to IU? IU probably has the history over Michigan St, but in terms of the last 20 years I don't think it's a stretch to say Michigan St would be the better job based on the short term history

How do you know it’s not the right time? I don’t think it is personally but I also wouldn’t be completely against Fife or Lewis. Until I met with someone and saw their plan, saw their X’s and O’s, and saw how they could win at IU I wouldn’t write off anyone. IU is different than most but so is the B1G as a whole. AD’s should always look and see the options and if options 1-4 don’t work then go get a guy that would do anything for IU to be good again.

We can’t afford to hire an unproven assistant and hope that they can turn things around. We haven’t played in a tournament game since 2016. We need a coach with proven success at the P5 level. Otherwise, there’s a good chance we’re back four years from now looking for a new coach again.

Regardless the new coach us to fit IU and if he doesn’t then IU will be doing this again within a few years too because that guy will flame out or bolt to another job.

Since our last three hires have all been to an elite eight or better, and each flamed out in wondrous and unique ways, that logic just does not hold with me.

There are better options that we should be able to get. If we can't, sure, go ahead and hire Fife and let it ride. He shouldn't be plan A is all I'm saying.
