How many of those guys had accomplished what McCollum has done. I don't care what division you are coaching, winning 4 championships is great. If you are a winner you can win anywhere

Then why haven't more championship High School, NAIA, D3, and D2 coaches gone on to win more D1 championships?

Regarding #4,  Eddies great and certainly recognizable, won’t argue his status in the top 5.

But these guys are just as recognizable off the top of my head.  That’s an easy 10:

Jerry Garcia

Stevie Ray Vaughn

Slowhand

Duane Allman

Trey Anastasio

Jimi Hendrix

Kirk Hammett

Angus Young

Billy Gibbons

David Gilmour

All this list, plus the additions, proves is that we grew up in an awesome generation of music.  The young kids are missing out.

Oh, and even Angus says he was the second best guitarist in AC/DC.  Malcom was the boss

I've been trying to talk myself into supporting Will Wade as an option.  The fact that he paid (or at least tried to pay) players gave him a sleaze factor that I haven't been able to shake.  Wade definitely can coach, and he has the personality to succeed at IU.

Looking back, a lot of the major schools were cheating in some capacity.  Adidas was paying players to attend Kansas and Louisville.  Nike was paying players to attend Kentucky, Duke, and North Carolina.  Pitino, Self, Calipari, Williams, and Coach K may have insulated themselves from those conversations, but I will never believe that they weren't aware.

As a society, most of us believe people should get second chances.  Knight brought in some assistants that needed second chances.  IU gave Sampson a second chance and that bit us in the rear.  Sampson's third act is going well.

My guess is that Wade would win big at IU.  His show cause penalty ends June 21, 2025.  Would IU consider hiring Wade when his season ends and suspending him until that date?  I doubt it, but Wade will get another P5 job somewhere.  Probably ASU.

Wade will get a job but very likely not until next year. No one wants to assume the show cause penalties.

Honest question to the group:

who fits the bill of:

- will run to the portal not from it

-create a culture that is uniquely Indiana basketball

share names that fit the criteria Scott shared

I’m less concerned with “run to the portal.” Some coaches that haven’t needed to do that previously would and could do that at IU.

I found it fascinating that we are looking at a guy who can create a culture, and who has supreme self-confidence.

To me? That makes Collins, Drew, Devries less likely, and makes Wade and McCollum more likely than one might have thought.

That's still not evidence of reduced risk. It's a single, anecdotal point of data.

I agree. There just isn't much precedent either way. How that translates is certainly a risk.

What about Beard would be uniquely Indiana? The man has never lived here or coached in Indiana. He's built the same culture at Texas Tech, Texas, and Ole Miss.

There isn’t a “uniquely Indiana” culture. The Indiana culture was really just Bob Knight culture. The past 25 years have shown that IU is just another school without Knight. So, if you want to bring back that culture, bring back a coach with a Bob Knight mentality.

Not saying that’s the perfect move to make, but that’s Beard.

I didn't think collectives were allowed to talk to recruits until the player signs with your team.

There are no rules.  Technically they aren’t supposed to be linked at all.  Remember it’s supposed to be a marketing deal, not pay for play.

We’ve talked about Collins a bit, but I would like to add we should bring his defensive assistant, Lowery, if it’s him.

Listen…with regard to McCollum…if you have your first 8-9 coaching candidates say no (which won’t happen) then call him…but he shouldn’t be on anyone’s top 5

I’m taking a Chris Collins or even a Brad Brownell before I’m taking a McCollum.

Those schools situations are different. UK, UNC, Duke all hired former successful players. Syracuse and Villanova hired coaches that were hand picked to be the next coach from their legendary predecessor coaches where they were loyal assistants to them. McCollum isn’t a former player of Indiana nor was or will he be hand picked by Bob Knight (RIP).

UL hired Pat Kelcey who was a gamble. So far so good…but Kelcey had far more experience at D1 than McCollum.

All I am saying that those top power 4 coaches are more than likely not leaving their current job. I just think all of these rumors are going to get some of you upset because we probably are not going to get a top coach from a power conference.

Stevens very, very doubtful

May No

TJO doubtful

Drew doubtful

Wright No

Bennett No

Few very, very doubtful

After this who do you really think that a realistic candidate. Like I have said I would take my chances in McCollum over Beard
