General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

Football is by far the biggest college sport and drives the financial results for the entire athletic dept.  Basketball barely moves the needle despite IU really liking basketball.  The football hire and how they perform is a very big deal for IU.
Nobody gave a crap about football til now. The stadium was half full most games.

Some are willing to take a risk on a guy who could turn out to be the next Billy G. That’s not worth the risk either.  Tons of other coaches like Byington, Wade, etc. that could kill it here also.

We’re trying to find the next Billy Gillespie???

Further…besides all the other red flags of someone with no experience taking over a program such as IUBB is the likelihood that McCollum takes a significant step back next year…as he is losing the majority of his players. I’m curious to see how he navigates the portal building a new team. How will he rebuild? We have no idea because there is nothing to refer back to with McCollum…another reason why he doesn’t need to be coaching here.

Losing the majority of his players?

-MO Valley player of the year Bennett Stirtz - JR

-2nd and 3rd leading scorers will both be gone

-4th leading scorer Tavion Banks - JR

-5th leading scorer Cam Manyawu - SO

-6th leading scorer Isaia Howard - FR

-7th leading scorer Kael Combs - SO

So, of the top 7 scorers...two will be out of eligibility. Your questions are good ones but it's not accurate to say the majority of his players will be done.

I don't know how he would recruit high-end players. I don't know how he would deal with agents/handlers/player circles/etc. I don't know how much his preferred tempo would increase with better athletes and personnel...I just know that I really like watching basketball and I watch a lot of it and I DO know that I really enjoy watching Drake play and watching Ben McCollum coach.

Archie couldn't handle the pressure. Sounds like ever may didn't want it. There are so many more things to this job then just getting it cause you won at division two. And this isn't a take your time rebuild. People aren't going to be patient after the last two hires. He would need to win right away. Has he dealt with high level agents?

I would have loved to read the opinions on Cignetti before he was hired.

its comparing Apples to Oranges IMO. I didn't follow it closely and don't invest the time and energy into Football as fan (mostly because I coach HS football and we have players who get recruited by D1, D2, or NAIA Schools so my time is focused on following their careers/ watching their games).

But I do remember my initial reaction was happy they hired a sitting Head Coach rather than an upstart Coordinator (like they did with last 2 football hires ......hhhhhmmmmm)

Haha! Actually, it was my team's choice today and they decided on Mesh. Good little spot.

Well done. Indy guy! Used to sell to them a long time ago. Good food

I want to win right away, but I won't mind if we hire a good coach that builds the program up the right way and it takes 2 or 3 seasons to do that.

You’re missing the point.  It’s the only college sport that really matters and IU needs to be decent at it or else our athletic dept will struggle to compete financially with the rest of the conference.

There is more to IU athletics than just winning bball games.

OK. Let me be more specific. 3/5 or 60% of their starting lineup will be gone next year. That's a lot of production and minutes to replace. At this time... He would be a bad hire when we have so many other viable candidates.

If you hire Beard, yes.  Pressure sucks.  Gillespie crumbled under it due to his dependencies on alcohol.  Indiana and Kentucky jobs are hard on people.  Not worth the risk.  That’s all I meant.

Point is the bbal program is in no position anymore to be taking a risk on an unproven first year d1 coach. Sure it's possible he works out but he could also flame out in a major way. There are plenty of names with proven track records who will most likely work out.

That's kind of deceptive; the 6th and 7th leading scorers for Drake are backup guards that average less than 4 ppg and less than 15 minutes per game.

Drake has four players that average over 20 minutes per game. Three of them will be out of eligibility.

If McCollum ends up the coach at IU  anyone in the stands that wears a white dress shirt and red tie to match him  should get tossed automatically.   It was dumb when Maryland fans did it a couple years back and the Drake fans look dumb doing it now

People did this with Sampson didn't they?  Blue shirt red tie?
