General Coach Candidate News

Given many programs seem to be adopting the GM model now, has it been clear that Brad was being considered for the HC role? Or is it possible he’s being considered for the GM role?

Was curious on that as well.  Steven's a GM, bring in a young coach like a McCollum paid at a lower rate.  That to me is more plausible than Steven's stepping down as GM to coach college.

Looks like they’re retooling with an alumni GM too.

Enjoy it UNC… this seems like IU-like behavior.

One of my people down here was all pissed the other day because Roy came out in staunch support and they all thought for sure he’d get the Woody treatment and one more season. An extension? Oof

Let's assume that Stevens is the next coach for a bit.  Is anyone here worried about the expectations and if he can really live up to them.  He has been out of the college scene for several years now. Will the fan base give him enough time to get things right or will he need to produce in year 1.

I've thought about this, and to be honest I just keep coming back to the fact that Brad Stevens is an exceptional coach, still has loads of connections throughout the country (and especially Indiana), has the respect and admiration of HS and AAU coaches everywhere, and will have no trouble assembling a high-caliber staff and pursuing top talent. There's simply no reason he would fail here.

Sure, some might have unreasonable expectations. But I think if Stevens has us top-4 in the conference regularly and rarely misses the tourney and makes a reasonably deep run every few years, most folks will be very happy with that. IMO that's about the best you can expect from any potential candidate.

Could be mistaken but think it’ll still be dirt cheap to fire him next year. Giving their alum a 4th year too with more resources. They’ll probably end up looking smarter than us lol

Not saying a whole lot recently.  With Basketball anyway.

Hubert Davis extension just announced.  So one less elite school we won't have to worry about this off-season.

This is great news.  I've been shadily rooting for UNC wins lately just for this reason.

I don’t think so.

Personally, while I’d love to be wrong, I’m assuming Brad and Dusty are a hard no. Otz and Drew in the next tier probably and I also think the odds it’s either of them are very, very low. To be honest, starting to wonder if the eventual hire is even somebody we’re talking about much at this point. Doubting it’s any of McCasland, McDermott, Buzz, Cronin, Pitino Jr etc. Probably not McCollum, Calhoun, or Byington all in their first years at schools. DeVries is too but maybe we can take him from WVU? Hard pressed to pick an individual favorite right now at the end of February.

I do like DeVries... but hope Dolson doesn't fall that far... I did find his contract details online... buyout is just under $1.1M.

Quote

DeVries, who made approximately $650,000 a year at Drake, will now make $2.8 million his first year, then $100,000 extra each year for the next four years.

In addition, West Virginia will pay DeVries’ buyout at Drake and if West Virginia finishes in top 6 of Big 12 over DeVries’ first 2 seasons, he gets an automatic 1-year extension. If West Virginia were to fire DeVries before the end of the deal, the university would owe him 75% of the remaining compensation as a buyout. If DeVries were to leave early, he would owe school 37.5% of the remaining compensation as a buyout.

I think we are 99.9% aligned on our view of the situation. Only slight difference I have here is that I really don’t think retiring Mike midseason in any way says something about Dolson’s preparedness for the search. I don’t think he necessarily had to have a good idea about if Dusty or Brad would say yes before deciding on Mike. IMO that was purely damage control and stopping a bad situation from becoming worse. That said, I’d sure hope with basically a year to plan, Dolson knows what he’s doing…

And hoping "Dolson has his guy" is fact and not just hope.
