General Coach Candidate News

Apologies if this has already been discussed regarding Dusty May, but all else being equal, if he had no past ties to IU whatsoever, do you think he would still be as high on the candidates list as he appears to be for many?

And for the record, I think he's a great coach who will have an extremely successful career when it's all said and done regardless of where he's coaching. I would love to see him return to IU if Brad doesn't work out - I think he'd crush it.

Just curious how much of that "he's an IU guy" still exists even after this Woodson debacle. Thoughts?

Zero chance he’s on our “possibles” list this season without it unless he was still at a smaller program. I am pretty convinced as it is he isn’t gonna leave UM after one year. If he wasn’t from here I would put the chances at 0% luring him away. And he most likely wouldn’t be that high on any lists here if he wasn’t an alum. There were lots of people who thought he was too green for the job last year, and weren’t interested until he completely flipped UM.

Long winded way of answering and saying: I don’t think he’d be considered/wouldn’t consider it himself if we were interested.

Thanks for explaining the process.  A little odd that you yourself tell outsiders who you are targeting and give a timeline and then two days later tell everyone else to shut up is my point

As he explained, folks that are part of the recruiting pipeline aren’t “outsiders.”

My guess is people didn't listen.

I must have missed it but what was the talk about Ballo being lost? Did the joke just go over my head or did something happen?

Sounds like he left the team for a few days.

That's the problem with how this whole thing is constructed. The concept of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) is NOT pay for play... it was set up to compensate the players for use of their name, their image and their likeness... in theory, to allow them to be paid for their inclusion in video games, to be able to endorse local businesses and products, etc... but as it's currently implemented, it has become pay for play.

So, rather than being paid a few bucks to hawk Billy Bob's Bargain Emporium, Johnny Athlete gets paid $1M to come play basketball at Indiana (or Duke, or Kentucky, etc)...

The revenue sharing is coming and as I understand it, it will be used to compensate all players as equitably as possible, based on the distribution across the various sports... so, everyone on the basketball team will get the same sized slice of pie... and the football players will get the same sized slice of pie, but the size of their slice of pie will be different (bigger or smaller) that the water polo team get.

Unfortunately, the genie is out of the bottle, and the whole thing is a pay for play situation not unlike the Kansas and UCLA and Kentucky and Duke payouts of days gone by, except this payout is above the table instead of under it. And the bottom line is there appears to be no accountability from the players, nor is there any discernible rhyme or reason for who gets what kind of payout (Leal and Gallo being paid to defense Woodson, for example).

We also have to assume that whoever the next coach is, his way of distributing NIL will be much different that his predecessor... and I suppose, with the current structure, that will be within his perview to do.

Have you seen that everyone within the same sport will get the same amount? Either from the NCAA/courts or IU? Everything else you said lines up with what I have seen and as I understand it but I don't recall seeing that it would be divided evenly by the team.

That would certainly be the most equitable way of dividing the money but I'm not sure that's how it's going to be. I thought it was going to be similar to the way coach controlled NIL is right now - they get a bucket to divide as they see fit. In a way, this makes as much sense as distributing it equally. The starting QB will have a much larger impact than the DB who is 10th on the depth chart and hasn't played a single snap.

The elimination of walk-ons is part of the way to more fairly compensate the players low on the depth charts, I'm not sure they'll all get the same amount of rev share.

Of course, it could be there and I just missed it.

Like many of you - I've been around for every coaching change after RMK (and sadly refreshed boards since then - first time was IIBF and Indy Star boards mostly) but this one feels real important. Like generational anchor important.

Us RMK fans are getting long in the tooth - less and less fans remember even that 1991 team. We haven't had a coach since that's created a legacy. Crean a bit, I guess, but it was still too up and down and he needed a deeper run then sweet 16 to insure that imho. But the point being is - this feels like our time to make or break this brand to a certain degree. Very dramatic I know.

I'm sure I felt this way the last 3 hires - but this time just seems heavier - do you all feel that way? I guess in the NIL age you don't have to wait 3 or 4 years to evaluate so you can 'fail fast' but can we afford to do that again? SD has got to be feeling this.

No.  I think then most people would assume he'd stick with Michigan.  The only thing that could make him leave is "going home."  Otherwise, what's the point.

Great post. I was in college when the Kelvin debacle cratered the team. Many of us have basically mostly only known IU as a mediocre program. But we still believe in what it can and should be. It’s hard to imagine that lasts many more classes of students if this continues. Kids matriculating today haven’t had many reasons to cheer for IU basketball as kids.
