General Coach Candidate News

This is probably a stupid question, but if IU is interested in Dusty May, what is the process? Do they have to ask Michigan for permission to talk to him, is May free to just meet and discuss job openings without informing anyone, or is there an unwritten code of ethics that schools normally follow? Just curious if there is a procedure.

Unlike the professional leagues, I don't think there are any NCAA or Conference rules about seeking out coaches or coaches seeking out opportunities.  However, I suspect most preliminary work is done on a clandestine basis via agents.  Any agent worth anything, is on the phone to Scott trying to get his guy on "the list," if only to get an increase from his current school.  If you're a guy like May, you really want to find out if you're 1 or 2, or 3-5 -- so you know how serious to approach you extension at Michigan.  If you're a lesser know guy out of left field, you let him know there is interest and sell your guy.  Scott is doing the reverse.  Looking down his list and calling agents saying "what if?"

I feel very confident that any name being thrown around right now are pure guesses, so I wouldn't get too worked up over anything. This process is going to take a while. As I mentioned earlier, I don't believe we will know who the new coach is until the national media breaks the story. I remember when everyone was made to believe Lon Kruger was going to be our coach at one point. Sampson came out of nowhere. Crean came out of nowhere. This will likely be the same thing. This is just my opinion. Like I said, I've not heard a single name of who we are targeting.

Give the mods a break. We’re running low on ideas of how to keep traffic up around here. I’m not gonna throw anyone under the bus, but the Turgeon idea was @Stromboli’s.

Are you ******* serious?

and for once, the word ******* shouldn’t be censored.

I’m just a lurker here but I will say Turgeon fits with at least two other Dolson attempted hires: Fitzgerald in football and Matta in basketball.

I would much rather risk a young and unproven coach than go this route but I do think there’s evidence that this is a route that appeals to Dolson.

Thad Matta was 10 times the coach Mark Turgeon was.  He's lost his fastball now, but you can't even compare the 2.

I agree! I would have been happy with Matta as the post-Archie hire, though it seems it wouldn’t have worked out. I have no info either. I’m just saying that sometimes I worry Dolson overrates longevity and experience.

There’s no defending the idea of hiring Pat Fitzgerald for instance.

You having a legit back and forth humoring this dude has been killing me today. This has been high comedy. Our random new guy a day with hot takes streak is at like five if you’re scoring at home.

I’m just picturing Dolson & Harper sitting in their office saying who should we throw at them now? I got one Mark Turgeon haha

Tom Crean, who most definitely would know:

”The number one requirement for (being the head coach at) a place like Indiana is that you better have been (figuratively) punched in the mouth many times in your life… and I’m not talking about dealing with a three game losing streak.”
