General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

Has nothing to do with “love” of Woody. Called being logical and seeing where gaps are and what causes that. it is all guards and has been. I see guards pass up wide open 3p shots all the time. Let even 2 of those fly per game and they are fine on 3p attempts. This is why a different roster would make a difference. You asked, I answered.

If we are being real, you cant stand him, have your mind made up and creates confirmation bias.

Has nothing to do with Love or dislike of a coach. The W/Ls determine that. How the team looks on the court.

When the objective is to win B1Gs and compete for national titles and your team is 100th best in the country all you can do is look in mirror and realize you’ve been a failure thus far.

As far as recruiting Davis being some turning point or saving grace is laughable to me. He does seem like a good enough guard but expecting a player like him to come into the B1G and make any difference as a freshman is laughable. If he’s willing to be a building block, sure.

Indiana’s approach is always backwards. Grab the kid from Harvard, grab some other older guard that has demonstrated the ability to do it at the college level. It’s like our coaching searches. Grab the guy that shows he can do it at the level you desire.

Woody, to me, is a likeable guy. I want nothing but for him to kill it. But we have 3 years of evidence to indicate what we will get. Is he going to change his philosophies? Recruit better players? Get them over the hump?

Agree, I think one could argue Woody's most talented team he will have at IU was last years team with TJD and JHS.
It think the biggest coaching concern with Woody is his in-game management which we can all agree has been pretty poor. To me this is very concerning and doesn't appear that he has any thoughts of changing it as he continues to do it every game. You can't be a poor in game coach and expect to go on deep runs in the tournament unless you have Duke or UK talent.
Last year was his high water mark. He will never have a duo like that again imo.

We have to remember the administration thought he was doing such a good job that they gave him a million-dollar raise last summer. So that might be some of his reluctance to change. He's thinking I just got a raise for doing what I was doing, why change now?

I have no expectation of them firing Woodson absent something extreme like literally not winning another game. I just think not firing him is wasting a season and putting off the inevitable. IU knew going into this that he wasn’t a long-term option. He turns 66 in two months. If he was 46 then sure, maybe give him more time to figure it out. Time isn’t something on Woodson’s side. Not all 60+ year olds are old. Coach Cig turns 63 this June and I don’t think there’s a person out there concerned about his energy/hunger. It’s dripping off him. Woodson, though? Well…

If he was hired as a “bridge guy,” move on before he burns down the bridge. Another year like this one would do exactly that. Another year like this one and we’ll be in a much worse spot when it comes to hiring a new coach. He could land a good spring class/portal class, but I have serious doubts based off last spring.

100% my thoughts as well but IU always does things the hard way and wastes more time. Crean and archie both should have been gone several years earlier. And now we will rinse and repeat once again.

Only ones I can think of are Roy Williams from Kansas to UNC and Self from Illinois to Kansas.

Both happened in the same year and have pretty odd extenuating circumstances which don’t remotely apply to us. Roy is pretty obvious.

When Roy left, he left an open spot at a true blue blood, being run by the most competent basketball administrations in the country, that was—at that very moment—a championship level team. Kansas had just come off of FF runs and was still loaded with 5-stars. It was a blue blood, championship, turn key operation for Self on Day 1. It was truly a case of Self leaving very good for a guaranteed shot at greatness.  There wasn’t even baggage from the old legendary coach because he left for home.

Indiana offers none of that. In fact, almost no job openings in college basketball ever offer anything like that.

How do you give someone a million-dollar raise for doing a good job, then less than a year later fire them for not doing a good job and give them a 12 million-dollar buyout? If that is the case someone else would need to be fired also.

We play like the 80's of Hakeem and Sampson in the game together for the Houston Rockets

When Houston was at its best it was 94 and 95 and that team hit a lot of 3's as well

I respectfully disagree Chris...... I can't image Coach is ANYWAY "peddling" or complacent with his coaching.

Tony Bennett went from Washington St to Virginia

Those are probably the types of hires IU could make from other major programs.

Target a young coach with a short record at a school with very little resources. We could conceivably pull Shrewsberry or maybe even a Collins out of NW because NW is such a low ceiling job.

You have to really love the upside of that coach paired with the resources of Indiana because fans and alumni are going to be nonplussed.

I had a booster from NW Indiana tell me the other day that we should go out and get a proven winner like Chris Collins. I kind of felt bad when I started laughing, then realized he was serious.

Giving him the raise was a stupid decision in a long line of stupid IU decisions. It’s not like we should’ve been worried about another program poaching him. He got blown out in the round of 64 and then got blown out in the round of 32 the following raise. That certainly didn’t warrant giving him a top-3 salary in the conference.

In any event, no reason to compound that mistake by making another one and keeping him around.

I know people hate him but if it had to be an IU guy, Alford was the only guy ready to step into the job.  Is that the best hire?  Probably not, but if you are restricting yourself to only Indiana guys he was #1 and whoever was below him was a distant 2nd.

I don’t hate him. I just didnt think hiring him was the best IU could do after firing Archie.

You are right though. If it had to be an IU guy, Alford was the only choice. He has been in college for decades. Never had consistent success but has won at numerous programs.

At this point, I don’t think the IU job has any shine left to it with guys who can win to the level of our expectations. If we are hell bent on keeping it within the family, then hire Alford. Just make this Woodson experiment end.

I know he’s not won much but I think he’s done a great job at Northwestern. Hasn’t he finished 2nd in the B1G before? I don’t think IU has had a single coach outside of Knight or Sampson that can do that. People underestimate just how hard it is to win at NW.

IU and Northwestern tied for 2nd last year

Winning anything at Northwestern should probably be bonus points.    They have only been to 2 tournaments in their history and he was the coach that got them into the tourney.   Not saying IU should even remotely go after him but winning at Northwestern cannot be easy

Exactly where was he going to go. Nobody else was going to come and steal him from us. Talk about stupid.
