some folks think

1. the on-court product is frustrating,

2. The coach is the problem,

3. Only a proven coach can fix us, but

4. IU won’t hire a proven coach.

If that’s the case I don’t know why they remain a fan let alone spend any time being grumpy on a message board.

that's an easy one... it's easier to b**** about something than anything else, for some.

I can't believe Jay Wright would even be contacted.

@Chris007 mentioned he was previously contacted and iu mentioned some large figures … but he just simply wasn’t interested at all.

And I think this is the ideal time to hire an up-and-coming coach at IU.

It's a great time for IU to create the GM/Player personnel structure in the athletic department, and a new, younger coach would probably be more apt to be receptive to using that than an older, more established coach.

This is the perfect opportunity for Dolson to create a completely 21st century basketball program at IU - the complete opposite of what Woody had.

Exactly! And I think that is what he will do.

MARCH 12TH 10:30EST: The board is talking themselves into Ben McCollum.

Frankly, I could be talked into it if Brad Stevens and Jay Wright say no. However, I assume Jay Wright would've accepted already and announced if that were the case.

Nothing will be announced until season is over.  I’m certain, part of Woodys force out, he wanted nothing released until season is over so everyone can focus on the season.   Announcing a new coach in Feb or now would’ve just been a major distraction for the team.

You didn't used to be such a downer on the possibilities....still don't see the sunshine..

We aren't the drunk at 2AM at the bar pouncing around finding our female drunk equal lol .... we haven't offered this job to 10 people. Sorry just don't believe that, I find it farfetched to think BillyD, Bennett, or Jay Wright were ever remotely options.

The last hire that would be considered "great" was Roy Williams. He went from Kansas to UNC. I do understand Williams' link to UNC, but still the move was surprising.

I guess Self would've been considered outstanding as well, because he led a B1G team to the final four before going to Kansas.

It doesn't seem like those type of hirings occur much anymore.

If you see a "big time" coach move, like Cal to Arkansas, there's usually a reason, like the coach has kind of worn out their welcome at their previous school.

EDIT: I'm sure that I'm missing some. I was just pointing out that these types of moves just don't seem to happen much at all anymore.

Weber was the coach at UI when they went to the final 4 not Self

I would argue that the strategy you mentioned to start may work better than what IU has done the last 2 hiring cycles...they should go flash that $11 million per year to more than one person.

Why would it change based on the candidate? Like, is a donor giving $5M to NIL if the hire is Stevens, $1M if it's Cronin and $500K if it's McCollum?

That seems weird. I get giving different amounts for the salary, but giving to NIL seems like you either want to support the program or you don't.

You wouldn’t pay the same price for a Pinto as you would for a Ferrari, but you still need a car, lol.

Wright was burnt out and didn't want to deal with the NIL and constant transfer issues that college coaches are faced with now.  I don't see why he would come back and deal with all of that now unless he really misses coaching.

I am just guessing, but I would think the small donors are going to provide no matter what.  The larger ones I would expect tie their donation amount to a particulate recruit, transfer, or current enthusiasm level around the program.  I thought it was reported that the NIL this past year was specifically tied to Woodson as coach.

Ben seems like the coach you land at Wisconsin or Iowa and you regret it because they'll play a style of basketball for the next 15 years and they'll be good here and there with some runs in March.

It's just not a sexy hire, could be a great hire, could blow up like Archie. If it is indeed a mid-major coach, we'll officially know the Indiana job is simply just not good anymore.

Easy to feel that way and certainly true to a degree, but as othes have mentioned, Loserville and pUKe just went through this a year ago and pulled in guys clearly down their list. As much as I detest Kentucky, they have cache...and that got them Mark Pope. The dynamics of college basketball have shifted so dramatically in the last 5yrs it's hard to say what the new normal is. There are tons of variables at play and timing is huge. IU almost certainly could have gotten May last year, but dropped the ball, so now have to live with the current landscape of who's available and willing.
