lol iirc you are a school teacher, high school and/or jr high school.  I may be remembering this wrong, but if I am remembering it correctly, you graded that paper so much like a high school and/or junior high school teacher, red pen and all.  that was hilarious.  no offense at all intended for anybody involved in the discussion, just got a great laugh reading that.  too funny.  thx.

You are glossing over guys like Bud Mackey though, who were convicted several times for serious crimes.  I think you remember that several guys Sampson recruited who verballed, some of whom played for IU, were more involved in the organized business end of drugs and other things than the typical college student buying a little weed.  Think about how great those IU jerseys must have been for business.

I really don’t care what happened then. He’s been the best coach we’ve had the past two decades and all we had to do was deny, deny, deny like everyone else.

Kelvin Sampson was, BY FAR, the worst coach in the history of IU basketball.

There is more to life than objective wins and losses, and he brought in a group of kids that in no way represented the University, the State, and the fan base.

I understand that everyone just wants to win. How we get there is where the difference lies. This is not about being right or wrong, it's about how we get there. I don't want anything to do with the Sampson, or anyone like him, method. I won't support or follow a one and done factory. Maybe it can't be done without 'playing the game' these days. I don't care for the NBA and I hate that college basketball keeps getting closer and closer to that model. I respect that others see it differently. My wife constantly tells me, "It's not all about you"!

Didn’t one of Crean’s guys run over a teammate with a car? Didn’t another one lock a teammate out of his own room so he could smoke a fatty causing him to transfer? If Sampson was BY FAR the worst, then Crean wouldn’t be far behind.

Fwiw, the word on the Holt/Davis situation was that the official story wasn't what was reported, but yeah, Crean definitely was not recruiting choir boys either.

And didn’t another coach punch people, kick people, choke people, verbally attack people?

Apparently Mike Davis is our best coach

If you hire the right coach, it can work. It's worked plenty of places, even here. Kelvin Sampson inherited a team that was probably less talented on paper than the previous year, but won more games with it. The reason we have fans who think new coach = rebuild is because we've hired coaches like Tom Crean and Archie Miller that made us rebuild.

To be fair, I think some of those guys that transferred in under Sampson would not have allowed to do so under the current administration.  That's partly on our administration and partly on where Sampson left the program.

Not sure what you are talking about in terms of that, but it's amazing to think that Emmitt Holt is STILL playing college ball at Providence.  First started playing at IU in 2014, transferred in 2015, sat out a year, had a pretty good year in 2016-7 (12 points and 5 1/2 boards per game at Providence), missed all of 2017-8 with an abdominal blockage that almost killed him (he lost 50 pounds in just two months), played in only 6 games in 2018-9.  He's now a senior at Providence six years after his freshman year at IU and is a part time starter for the Friars, averaging 6 1/2 points and 4 boards per game.

But what would actually change? Offense would still suck.

Yeah....I guess I'm not getting the Frank Martin love.  I get that he got South Carolina to the final four....which is the only time in the eight years he's been there that they've made the tournament.  He's been at Kansas State and South Carolina for thirtteen years and made it past the first game in the tourney twice.

If we are looking for someone to have sustained success in terms of tournament appearances year after year and tourney runs on a semi-regular basis, there isn't anything in Martin's history that says he'll do that.  He's a good coach, but he's really not the kind of guy we are looking for.

For the record, after Crean was hired and before Sampson was hired, the guy I wanted was Greg McDermott.  McDermott has had a very good run at Creighton....but I can't ignore that the same year that Sampson was hired at IU, McDermott was hired by Iowa State and he flopped miserably there.  There aren't many fool-proof, slam dunk guarantee dynasty hires in D1 basketball.  And even fewer that the timeline and money is going to match up.  It's why the people who talk about Brad Stephens aren't getting it.

Oh hell no. Davis quit on his own team so even Crean ranks ahead of him post Knight. Plus, the FireMikeDavis web sight got me started on the misery sharing with other fans/graduates that I still feel today. Hopefully, it ends today with the General back in his house.

I live in Columbia, SC and Martin is as good as anyone IU has had since Knight. If Archie doesn’t make it I would give Beard the blank check over Martin though.
