Class of '66 Old Fart

IUBB @ Michigan - 1/6/19 @ 4:30 ET

Recommended Posts

Positives:

7 turnovers.  +3 rebounding.  Fans complained for years about our inability to get the ball into the post.  We went there relentlessly in the second half today.  Hung in a game where we outmanned on the road against a top 5 team that was lights out in the first 10 minutes.

Negatives:

Still need a third scorer. Bench scoring is nonexistent.  Slow start.

Food for thought:  Michigan played very well at home and won by 11.  They had 3.....3.....turnovers.  I would argue they should have had a few more (couple of charge calls not made as well as a couple of travels) but overall I thought the refs were okay today -- nothing out of the ordinary on the road.

I really hate to lose, can’t stand it. But I agree with you. I’m satisfied, we could’ve mailed it in early. Still without a 1/3 of our rotation, starting PG, on the road vs a top 5, AND JuMo and Romeo pickup 2 quickies. We were so close a few times late and just couldn’t knock down that 3 and pickup that charge call on the other end.
I’m not blaming the refs for our loss but man they sucked today. Yes, I know UM was called for 2 more fouls in this game. But it was the ones they called or didn’t call that really got me

This is correct. I'm not blaming them either- Michigan is better than IU, plain and simple, but that doesn't mean the refs weren't really bad. As you mentioned, WHEN you make a call (or don't) is almost as big as what you call.

It’s the 8th game in a row we started slowly but you should not bring it up as many posters are disappointed to read such negative comments.  Instead, please note how nice our uniforms look in HD and that Tom Garls tie makes his eyes shimmer.

Truth hurts.  Our offense is bad early in games.  There's no other way to say that.  Our offense is generally kinda' stagnant for stretches in most games, and Archie isn't recruiting shooters.   That baffles me because that's his missing piece.

The rest is just funny.

This game was about coaching, in game adjustments, and personnel management.

Coach really sacked it up putting both Romeo and Juwan back in the game. It was the right call with limited options. The injuries cost us any chance of legitimately winning the game. We need both Rob and Deron back ASAP.

That is a fair assessment- although I thought the officiating was poor.

I'm as critical as anyone but here are the bullet points:

- Go into game without Davis or Phinisee (not to mention Thompson, Forrester or Hunter)
- Best 2 players with 2 fouls each before the 1st media timeout
- Down double digits early and close to being blown out
- Playing in the #2 ranked team's gym
- Lose by 11 and actually win the 2nd half
- I'm ok with this but need to get Rob back for Maryland

P.S. only 5 turnovers I believe

Jerome Hunter, Damezi Anderson, and Robert Phinissee are all good shooters.  One is hurt and out for the season, one is shooting 45% from the three but is on concussion protocol, and the third is having problems getting on the court because of reasons other than his ability to shoot.  I'm not sure where the 'Archie isn't recruiting shooters' is coming from.  And I'd say Durham's leap in his perimeter game has been incredible.

I was thinking about that earlier today.

Thrilled to get TJD.  Will be very happy if we get KB but that being said we really, really need to also add a shooter.  It would be hard to overstate how much better TJD, KB and Smith, and our entire offense, could be if we had a legit perimeter threat.

Jerome is supposed to be a shooter to be fair

I don't think he recruited Hunter to be a shooter.  Damezi is fine against Jacksonville.  There's a reason he didn't play against Michigan.  He's not the answer.....   Phinisee is a point guard.   He's not the answer, either.  Those guys can all shoot, but they aren't the shooters this offense needs.  Neither is Morgan, for example.  He can make the shot, but he's not someone for whom a defense has to account or game plan against out there.  I'm not talking about guys who will make 25 three-pointers in a season. I'm talking about players who can make 70.

It's not negative comments I'm offended by. Heck, I yell at the TV when I see bone headed plays. My problem is there are some posters that post negative comments rarely if ever, will post anything when the players make a good plays.

If you told me before the game that we’d have only seven turnovers, outrebound Michigan, and Devonte would have 0 turnovers I’d say we’d leave Ann Arbor with a victory. We were without our critical starting point guard, our biggest guy and an offensive threat down low, and the two best players dealt with foul trouble from the beginning, and we still outscored them for 30 minutes.

The loss obviously sucks and there are certainly areas of need for this team but at full strength (with Rob and DD back) this team should compete til the very end over a top 4 Big Ten finish.

Down five scholly players on the road against a very good team. At UM is quite literally the toughest game on the conference schedule.

Not the worst loss.

BTW; Romeo is rapidly improving. He’s the three point shooter that’s starting to arrive. The other three point shooter that this team needs? DGreen, who will be playing alongside Rob plenty.

We good.

He didn’t recruit a great shooter to be a shooter?  Hmm if so maybe Archie ain’t the guy.

And Rob being a PG has what to do with it?  Having Yogi as our primary shooter worked pretty well in 2016.

Outside shooting has become such a detriment to this team. Hard to keep a defense honest and not packing it in if we can't knock down anything from outside. We have got to look for a shooter to come in next year even if it means letting someone know that there may be no PT available for them going forward beyond this season. I hate seeing this done, but we can't wait until the 20'21 class to find someone.

I think all concerned thought they were getting another Nick Z this year in a grad.
Unfortunately that has not worked out so well.

In the college game I’m not all that high on recruiting bigs like Fitzner to shoot 3s. I like my 7 footers banging inside and getting the rebound. Give me a guard like Z any day of the week. Archie obviously recruited Anderson to shoot but unfortunately he is not good at defense. At least not yet.
