IUBB vs. Illinois - Thurs., 1/3 @ 7:00

Recommended Posts

It felt more like sitting at a bar watching the game with friends and fans. I knew there would be complaints about bad plays from posters but those same posters would also recognize and post about good sets or a defensive stop. There are several posters now who will post how terrible a play is by player X then completely ignore the fact that he turned around and made an incredible play to make up for it.

People will take a stance on a player; (example) Green is a terrible ball handler and decision maker. Green goes down the court and makes an incredible pass for a Smith dunk. Crickets. Green makes a boneheaded play where he turns it over or takes a terrible shot and there are immediately 10 posts calling him out with a “told you so” tone. It gets to be laughable.

Yeah agreed. Like Skip with his Lebron hatred. That’s what people know now with those types of shows.

I think you see what you want to see. Imo there are 4 or 5 posters that post repetitive drivel and heck some of you probably see me as one of those.

I think the threads are a pretty good reflection of Expectations vs Outcomes.

And it’s pretty simple.

We’ve had 1 beautiful game where we played above expectations and that thread was just fine obviously.

We play poorly and win against Northwestern, Penn State, UC Davis.

We play ok/decent and win vs Butler but way tougher than expected. I think that thread demonstrated the frustration/jubilation better than any game.

I was proud of some of our play during the Louisville game but they aren’t that good and we had to sneak out a home win there.

Our record is phenomenal and our potential is strong. But our overall play hasn’t been very good or consistent especially in the first half of games.

Expectations vs Outcomes per game.

Granted though, there are still a few that are just completely unreasonable. But there are some of those on the other side too, they just don’t post as much in the game threads.

Honestly if I felt this was the case this wouldn’t be the board for me. Every single person on here has expectations on this team. But come on man. Some have went so over the top miserable people don’t want to be here during games or after games. If you feel I am making that up go look at my likes on my initial comment. People are getting tired of the vocal minority. The ones that say this is a piss poor team. Our team sucks. Every post. Like seriously, it sucks the lifeblood out of the board. People can be negative and add something. Hell I used to go at it with Alford and Mike but at least they held a discussion. That’s what this is about. Discussion. Not agreeing or providing hot takes. Not making everyone on here miserable because their feelings of being an IU fan aren’t up to their expectations.

I agree that the game threads have been pretty doom and gloom despite our record. However I don’t think our play matches our record.

I’m happy as a lark because it’s about the bottom line.

But I’m also worried that we aren’t nearly as good as our record indicates because we haven’t played well even against the lesser teams.

We surely don’t suck though.

My assessment so far.

Offense 4/10
Defense 8.5/10

We are winning games with defense and smart plays down the stretch. Or coaching.

We do have some terrible trends that are continuing.

Slow starts. Turnovers. Terrible 3 point shooting as a team. Offensive flow has been plain ugly at times.

I get that, but it was still bad. Even early in the second half when we took the lead you could hear a pin drop.

Were you there? I was and it was not raucous like other times I have been but it was not dead in the hall. When we were closing the gap in the fiat half the crowd was into each possession. When we had the multiple shot clock violations on Illinois the crowd was loud while we were on D. When they started to come back in the second half the crowd was loud.

Not the loudest I have heard but certainly never thought man this crowd needs to get involved.

Yeah and I hate that it bothers me like it does. But game threads used to be a bunch of dudes enjoying the game together. Not possible anymore. Maybe I am too much of a homer to handle that much negativity on something I care about that much. I just don’t get what is enjoyable about some that only post negatives. There isn’t anything that is all rainbow or sunshine, but nothing is this negative either. Someone overly happy would annoy me equally. Because it’s fake and nobody wants to hear all positives the same.

I could handle the negative posts, if they did positive posts also.

I haven't looked at the numbers, but I could swear I heard the play by play guy say rank was one of the top offensive teams in the B1G. I could have heard wrong, but if that is true then our offense is better than 4/10.

Thanks for putting our TOs in perspective. I don't like to see 15 TOs, but when seeing that list, I'm not upset about it.

We’re top ten in 2 point shots I believe thanks to Juwan and Romeo  Threes and Frees are holding us back badly.

And that’s where this team has potential..

Durham, Phinisee, Morgan, Smith, Green, and Fitzner are not “bad” shooters but they take some bad shots. If they take only open 3s the rest of the season our 36% from deep would go up a bit. Ditto from the line. Last night wasn’t bad (25-35) from the line but could be better if we get the right players to the line consistently.

I have no idea what’s up with Romeo’s shooting from the line but I’d guess more than half his FT misses are short after swishing his first FT. Maybe he’s not trusting his shot enough.

This may sound absurd but I could envision this team shooting better from outside as the season goes along. I feel confident Al, Rob, and Morgan are going to hit open threes more often than not.

Exactly. There are some that only seem to post when something negative happens, but rarely if not ever post when something negative happens.

You get that in every sports group/page online. It irritates me too, I tend to call them on it.

The negativity sucks, okay great. So do the guys that point out our flaws now while we are winning get credit for understanding them when we go on a losing streak because of those same flaws, or is it just still negatively?

I understand we have injuries and we are a work in process, but I don’t see anything wrong with talking about the holes in our game. Archie has talked about the exact same things that are bothering many on here and if he doesn’t a media reporter reminds him. Looking at my crystal ball I see a bumpy road ahead, but I sure would love to be wrong.

On offense, yes.

On defense he is consistently a net-positive, and one of the players that consistently causes the opponent to turn the ball over.

I would submit between his own turnovers and bad shots, he gives away at least as many possessions as he takes back.  I think if Archie had another option, he'd use it.  I'm shocked he's not recruiting more guards and shooters.

Just my opinion but there are some on here that only show up, and post their thoughts, when the team isn’t playing well. That’s while winning or losing. That’s just something I have no desire in reading, especially in a game thread.

There are a few that will only post positive comments at anytime regardless of how the team is playing. That’s annoying too but less so than the always negative no matter what so I can say I told you so.

I’m not calling anyone out but anyone who visits the board frequently can probably name those type of posters.

“Back in the day” it seemed someone would post something negative and then stats, info, or trends would be looked into and discussed. We’d eventually get around to possible ways to fix that problem or what we’d like to see change. Now, we have “hot takes” and posters disappearing after posting negatives all game until the team turns it around.

I loved going back and forth with JSHoosier, not just to see his avatar every other post, because we had some good discussions that looked into stats and trends that made us both do a bit of research. I can’t recall the last time I actually dug into stats to discuss on here because... I look at the poster and immediately know they’re not really looking to discuss a topic but rather to post their “hot take.” It’s old and I’d rather just enjoy the games.

Furthermore, look at the prediction league to see what posters are close to having a beat on this team. It’s telling when posters are predicting scores that won’t be remotely close. I get that some think/hope this team is better than they are but that’s not reality. This is a grind it out team that’s not going to really bury in team in the Big Ten to include a not really good Ill team at home.
