Cheaney40 Posted April 16, 2018 Posted April 16, 2018 Not sure if there's a thread for this or not...I couldn't find one. Anyone else watched this 30 for 30 yet? Thoughts? Sent from my XT1650 using BtownBanners mobile app Quote

moyemayhem Posted April 16, 2018 Posted April 16, 2018 It looks like you have to subscribe to ESPN+ to see it, which likely means almost no one will see it. AZ Hoosier, Tom White and chicagoHOOSIER 2 1 Quote

I missed it Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners It was never on regular cable. ESPN decided to put it on the new ESPN+ channel -- meaning you have to pay for it. I've read a review on it, saying it was as much about the reporter who uncovered the tape of Knight and Reid as anything. FYIW, I just found the review. Here it is ... https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/reviewing-espns-the-last-days-of-knight-and-how-to-watch-for-free/ Quote
iuhoosierfan90 Posted April 16, 2018 Posted April 16, 2018 ESPN+ is offering a free trial so you can sign up and watch it at no cost to you if you decide to cancel your subscription. I'm anxiously waiting for the 30 for 30 on MSU and Baylor to come out (this is completely tongue in cheek). I agree with the review that it was mostly about the reporter. It was one sided at best as none of Bobby's supporters were on camera (maybe there weren't any, I don't know) My question is who was the person in Ohio who sent the tape to the reporter? He said it showed up around 2000 (tape was from the 1997 season) and postmarked from Ohio... Any thoughts on who was connected to IU in 1997 and would have had access to the tape and was then in Ohio a few years later? Quote

I wanted others input ... My initial thought was Dakich ...he was in Bowling Green from 97-07 and with his lack of respect for Bobby's shenanigans, I just assumed it was him moyemayhem and mdn82 2 Quote

HoosierFan1994 Posted April 16, 2018 Posted April 16, 2018 I watched it because of the free trial. I was really young when Coach Knight was fired so this was a good history lesson. It really did just show one side of it but it really painted a bad picture for how IU was in the late 90's. Kind of surprised ESPN did this since Knight worked for them. That being said Coach Knight is one of the greatest coaches ever. He is just a questionable human being. I think the "what's up Knight" was clearly set up by the University but they had plenty of stuff to fire him before that. I just hope Archie can lead IU into another great generation of success. It has been way too long. Quote

I walked away from it feeling pretty bad for Neil Reed. Here's a kid that idolized Indiana basketball and after the hand around the throat incident (and others), he flat out says to Coach Knight "Indiana isn't what it used to be" and walks out of the room ... that's ballsy! But it's disappointing that his love for IU and Knight was ruined because of all of this jonz44, Tom White, Iugradman and 4 others 6 1 Quote
Popular Post Double Down Posted April 16, 2018 Popular Post Posted April 16, 2018 Great thoughts everyone. I was on campus throughout this entire saga. Had some good friends close to the program. I graduated in Knight's last year. I think they did a really good job telling the story as they saw it. It is really a personal challenge to reconcile Bobby the basketball genius, with Bobby the human being. I actually thought the documentary was really thoughtful in saying that they went into the story with the intent of showing "kids these days are just a little too soft for RMK." But when they investigated further, there was way more to the story and it was pretty awful stuff. Bobby is a true bully. When his teams weren't winning, he became an even bigger bully. He used fear and intimidation with everyone around him. The sign of a true narcissist is someone who can't take any challenge at all to their "omniscience". I really really felt for Neil Reed. I was glad they told his story completely. Not just the stuff while he was playing there, but that RMK was petty enough to take a completely unnecessary and cheap shot at Neil and his dad long after he left the program, playing for a team that would never be any threat to IU. But what I thought was incredibly damning was that Jason Collier and Luke Recker BOTH refused to open their mouths when they could have. Many ex players gave anonymous statements. It was implied that these guys were terrified that Knight was going to ruin them publicly. Once you are outside of Bobby's control, he will do anything to try and ruin you. Perhaps even wishing you dead on ESPN radio. It sucks reconciling this. His teams played the best basketball I've ever watched. When Knight isn't being a bully, listening to him talk about basketball is like listening to Picasso talk about painting, or Marvin Gaye about writing music and singing. You just feel like sitting down, leaning forward and listening for hours and hours. It must be similar to the way Penn State fans have to reconcile JoePa in their minds. Obviously different situations, but rooting for a guy that you lionized for years, only to find out their flaws as they were exposed years later. For the record, I'd take Bobby Knight over JoePa any day of the week and twice on Sunday over what went down at PSU (like that even had to be said!). I've moved on from Knight. I know he'll never come back and I'm not even sure I want him back. But I'll look back fondly on the days when that tough old crank had guys playing some unbelievable basketball. Me thinks we might just have the best of both worlds moving forward with Archie, but time will tell on that one. mdn82, Skidmarks, Lebowski and 17 others 20 Quote
AKHoosier Posted April 16, 2018 Posted April 16, 2018 I always felt ESPN could have done a wonderful 30 for 30 on IU basketball under Knight, it's a shame they only focused on that single incident. Deserthoozier, WayneFleekHoosier, Iugradman and 2 others 4 1 Quote

He clearly outlived his welcome in Bloomington, and was his own worst enemy. At this point, he's just an angry, bitter man. Archie is our guy now... Iugradman, Lebowski, mdn82 and 1 other 4 Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I watched this last night. It was interesting enough. Pretty much helps to paint the picture why Indiana didn't want their next coach to be the face/power of the university. I was a student on campus during these events and was happy that IU was moving on from Knight, until I realized how poorly it was handled, OVER and OVER!!! Sampson, if he could have kept things clean-ish would have had Indiana as a true perennial Blue Blood powerhouse and would probably still be our coach. I enjoyed the 2002 title run so much. It's primarily what made me as diehard as a fan as I am. Luke Recker.......don't get me started. I loved watching him play. I dated a girl he used to "date", or so she said (LOL). He was a phenomenal talent. Hated seeing him leave. UGH! IUsafety, Iugradman and schoosier 3 Quote

He dumped her in a flash. yeah, I can see that. I've heard they were broken up before the accident but who knows for sure. either way, its hard to indict Recker on this. Most college relationships don't make it under the best of circumstances. The accident wasn't Recker's fault. Its really just a painful, awful situation. It would have been storybook for Recker to rekindle/maintain things but its hard to call him a loathsome human because of it. and maybe he is........but didn't know if you knew more than I did.
