I do remember that story well. I think her name was Lacey. It did seem that Payne was special to her and that was a cool story on its own. Sad that this all devalues that in a way.

Could be off on my timeline but I was always under the belief the relationship/work at the hospital came after the rape as a PR stunt to improve his name and reputation

Wow. Sad! He did seem to positively impact that girls life and family so I take some solace in that.

Izzo isn't going to be fired unless some kind of direct link can be found. "He said that he said that she said" isn't going to be enough to jolt the entire foundation of the athletic department. And IMO, it shouldn't be.

I know what's going on, I have the utmost respect for the investigation, but branching out and trying to put the tentacles into everyone in the athletic department is just too much IMO. My he said-she said remark was not about the authenticity of the problem but rather who did and did not know about it and when.

when MSU played at IU, there was this man yelling stuff at Izzo as he was walking to the locker room for halftime.  He was standing on ground level near the walkways towards the locker rooms, just yelling aggressively right in Izzo's face.   Izzo even looked back at the guy as he was walking away with his 2 police escorts.     Did anyone else see that?

Izzo could be a casualty of public pressure more so than actually doing something wrong. If the people smell blood and this continues he may walk away from it.

IU has a real opportunity to regain a spot as the one of the top few teams in the league. Obviously improving is the most important factor, but the other teams make a huge difference too. 

We know Purdue will flame out in the tourney, lose all those seniors and return to their natural state of mediocrity for 3-5yrs. It will take Painter that long to build another Monster in his lab and recruit another crew of try-hards that can improve just enough to over-achieve by their 5th year. Rinse and repeat. 

Wisconsin appears to be on a downward trend and it's about time. I hate them.

Northwestern woke up after last year and realized they always will be Northwestern. 

Ohio State concerns me, but remains to be seen if Holtman can recruit and win with his own players.

The final piece is for Michigan St to go away too. Izzo is that entire program. I'd love to see him and his Indiana talent poaching ride off into the sunset.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Izzo is the entire MSU program.  They went to the Final Four with Forddy Anderson, had an Elite 8 and title run with Jud Heathcote, and won at least a share of the BT title with a couple of other coaches.  They've had their most sustained success with Izzo, but they had some success with other coaches.

He is a directly enabler of the growth in sexual assault on college campuses, athletics, and specifically MSU athletics.

Furthermore, an abundance of caution should be throw in the favor of the victims, not the accused. In our current situation, the perpetrators and enablers are reaping all of the support while victims’ stories of assault are reduced to hearsay. This is not our normal justice system; this is an institution that operates in its own quasi-jurisdiction. The leverage of those in power over those without creates an overwhelmingly unfair situation for victims. In these cases, I really believe it is far more important and valuable to side with the victims till the accused are proven innocent. The cost of possibly allowing rape culture and sexual assault to continue to be swept under the rug is too great, versus the cost of one individual’s reputation being questioned or tarnished.

I know we are talking about 18-22 year old men in most of these cases but there is a way to prevent from being accused of wrongdoing... never put yourself in that position! It's easy enough to mingle with the ladies on a college campus without alcohol or drugs being involved. I'm sure it's even easier when you're a basketball player. The best way to go about it is being aware of your surroundings and not doing something stupid.

I know some of these players have had things taken care of since they were middle/high school like grades and other wrongdoings. It's a culture that needs fixed at several levels. I believe what Izzo has done is to turn a blind eye to it. Appling and Payne weren't punished when they should have been. What message does that send to them and the rest of the team? It's okay as long as you win games..

It's not even close to being that simple. Girl gets mad because you won't return her calls? Boom, false accusation. The only solution would be to avoid all contact with the opposite sex, and even then you're not completely safe.

Pretty sure false rape accusations are somewhere around 10 percent. So that means Izzo let his players committ like 15 rapes with little to no consequence. Not really that much better

So we just sacrifice the falsely accused in the name of social justice? Women aren't always the innocent damsel in distress. They can make rape allegations up, they can lie, etc. They shouldn't automatically be believed. Here's s story from a year ago. 

"Police say Nikki Yovino, 18, confessed to making up rape allegations against college football players to gain the sympathy of a prospective boyfriend. The players were later cut from the team, had their scholarships stripped and were forced into leaving the school."
