Archie miller radio show on now iu radio network

Recommended Posts

Tidbits from tonight's radio show.
Archie Miller says he'll begin tapering practice in the next week or so. Won't go more than hour, 45 minutes on long days. On tight turnarounds, IU won't practice more than 45-60 minutes.
Archie Miller on freshman F Race Thompson, who is redshirting: "Race is about as improved a player as we have on our team." Thompson is spending lots of time with strength coach Clif Marshall. "Race has gotten into the best shape of his life."
Archie Miller says Al Durham and Justin Smith are among the most reenergized IU players coming off the Christmas break.

I like to hear that about Justin Smith. His minutes have really declined but will be a huge asset down the road.

I just hope he can be ok with not playing a lot this year and stick it out. He was our highest rated recruit this year im sure he planned on playing more minutes.

A big part of it is the mindset of the player.  Does he think he deserves more minutes regardless of how he performs in practice or what he is told by the coaching staff or does he understand why he's not seeing more action and knows what he has to do and is working on his deficiencies?   Too many kids are coming out of these AAU programs and think they're NBA ready and destined for stardom.  Not saying that's Justin, but I think it's a mindset too many have.

Archie had positive comments on Clifton Moore from the radio show:

On Clifton Moore: “He’s right there. He hasn’t had a chance yet, but I think it’s inevitable that Clifton’s going to get in Big Ten games as we move forward. He’s gotta stay ready. He works extremely hard in practice and is getting better. He’ll be ready when his number is called just because of how much he cares and what a good teammate he’s been. Right now, we haven’t had to go that direction. We’re probably playing Juwan a little too much, probably need to look at a couple windows where we can get Clifton in, so that when he does have that opportunity where he has to play extended minutes, that he’s prepared for it.”

Nice to hear but that's sorta coach speak .

That was my reaction, too.  Before the Minnesota game he was asked the same question, especially in light of De'Ron's injury.  His response basically made it sound like Clifton was going to get more time, as it was "all hands on deck."  As we all know, Justin got the start, Clifton didn't play.

The fan base is definitely curious about seeing Clifton.  I'm sure if he could help the team, he'd get some playing time.  I'm guessing next time we see foul trouble in the front court, Clifton will come in just to absorb some minutes.  We can all see how he looks then.

I'm halfway between guessing and hoping that the next time we are playing like dog crap he gets "non-mop up" minutes.

Perhaps he gets some minutes against Illinois. We may have a big lead they are freaking terrible.

(Archie) On whether a fourth official should be added to games: “No. I think that’s just one more guy to screw up the game. Without question, we don’t need any more of those guys running around out there.”

LOL

Sure different than Ted Valentine's answer:  "Yes, absolutely.  In fact, I volunteer to be cloned.  We could use more of me."
