I've thought for a while he's been a bit overrated as a recruiter.  I'd say good but not great.

Problem is to cover up his coaching flaws he needs to recruit at a Duke type level and he can't.

That sums it up. Give him UK roster and he would do fairly well. Maybe not as well as Cal but he'd be a regular winner against the likes of Northwestern and Penn State. I think. [emoji85].

And he'd be able to schedule tougher in the non-con since the conference schedule would even it out.

Tell you what I'll give you 100 dollars every time Kansas, UNC, Duke and UK hire a guy with a resume like Creans.

UK hired Gillespie (sp?) and Tubby. Duke hasn't hired a coach since becoming a blue blood, UCLA has hired a few similar to Crean.

Edit: I'm late to the party as I see my post has already been discussed, just catching up.

One other thing on that point we were tied for second and now we are 3rd which doesn't seem like a big drop but at the time third place was 2 championships. It was us and UK then a couple of programs with 2 with us winning more recently

Now we share 3rd with 2 schools who have won it more recently one have won 5 in that span.

And we have Uconn nipping at our heels having won 4 in that span.

I think we tend to get a little blinded.  He throws out offers to a slew of 5-star kids and we see our name mentioned with an offer and we look at the highlight clips and think Oh Boy when in reality, the biggest share of those kids don't really care about an IU offer other than to add it to their collection.  We think he's doing a good job of recruiting because of all the offers he makes to the elite players.

A few knocks on Crean's recruiting since that's where we seem to be in the reasons Crean isn't right for Indiana

- too many offers too little impact
- too much money spent not enough ROE
- recruiting athletes with low bball IQ and the inability to teach it
- recruiting a collection of talent (AAU All Stars) not building teams
- consistently missing a huge piece (a big, shooters, point)
- over signing and needing to push players out

My ah-ha moment with crean, was the beginning of his 3rd season. I thought from the get-go something was just not right with his offense, but chalked it up to the talent he had the first two years.  I use to bring this up on the old scout site and would routinely get crucified for it.  I think most were still in the honeymoon phase with him.  You know, he pulled us from the abyss when nobody else would do it.  That wore off of me very early.  I gave him the benefit of the doubt and really wanted him to be in charge for 25+ years to come.  I didn't want to go through a rebuild again, after all the hell we had been through.  As soon as all the talk started entering the preseason #1 season, about going undefeated and so on, and losing the way we did to the 'Cuse, I was done.  I was ready to cut ties and do what Ohio State football did!  Go get the guy you want and start winning BIGTIME!  Well, how many years later and we are still dealing with the same STUFF!

I feel like I'm in purgatory and can't get to heaven or hell!  So close to both at different times, but just kinda stuck in the middle!

And you were one of my few allies there.  I still love you for it.

His offense hasn't changed.  We're just watching different guys dribble.  Verdell Jones was a turnover machine, then Yogi was for a couple of seasons, now Newkirk is.   Groundhog day's in 2 days, but we've lived it for almost a decade.  We're absolutely in basketball purgatory.....and I'm not sure the powers that be want to get out.   PM me sometime.

I was going to mention you in that last post, but didn't.  I didn't know if you would remember me from back then or not.

Of course I do.  I remember who was decent, and who the good guys were.  (the ones who just wanted to talk IU sports and didn't have an agenda)  And I remember the self-righteous jackasses, too.  A couple in particular, and not much has changed.

I think you and I were right there together. No one wanted to believe what we were saying. I wish the old site was around so I could see some of my old posts. I feel like I've been saying the same thing since season 1.

I'll admit my first inkling of Creans true nature was the Nebraska game Zellers first year.

The Syracuse loss which showed that nobody on our side even knew how to break a zone despite Syracuse always using a zone and having a week to prepare was my last straw.

I gladly would trade last years BTT if it meant we had already moved on.

How Yogis second and third years weren't enough is beyond me.

He definitely showed more than his share of WTF moments before I was done.  Like the Butler game with the walk-on beating us on a last second layup.

Omg I had repressed that. I only remembered the Illinois game.
