how close are you to being onboard?

Personally, I've never been a fan of Crean.  I honestly didn't like the hire when we made it and he was our 3rd/ 4th option from what I've been told.  He had Dwayne Wade, Got his Final Four and that pretty much sums him up.

Given the position we were in, he has turned out to be an INCREDIBLE hire for Indiana.  Now that the rebuilding efforts are over, it's time for Indiana to keep winning.  We just don't seem to be doing that right now.

Therefore, I'm NOT on the Fire Tom Crean train yet because I don't think he deserves to be fired for what he's done at IU.  I view Indiana Basketball for what it is... not elite.   Hate to say it, but back to back Sweet 16s might not be that low of a bar like we originally thought.  It's been 27 years since we've won a championship.   This is rambling, and I don't really know where my head is at right now. lol

Who were the first couple options? Just out of curiosity.

I agree with all of this.

Depending on how next year turns out, I'm not scheduled to board the train until next March or April.

I don't think it's right to fire him this year, just one year removed from a second consecutive Sweet 16 (which hasn't been done since the 90s I believe) and a Big Ten regular season title.

Why am I starting to want to compare Crean with Romo.  Our team plays well/leads most of the game, then he/we somehow figure out a way to screw up AGAIN.

I'm hoping... HOPING, that he will prove me wrong and pull a Tom Coughlin by coming back off a season where people start to wonder if he should be fired with a title year, but I'm really beginning to doubt it...

Hey, some familiar faces here :). What's up?

So, I've historically been a bit of a Crean defender. That has been changing as this season has developed. There are a lot of things I haven't liked this year, and some of them are philosophical.

So, I'm starting to board the train. If we completely collapse down the stretch here and Vonleh leaves, then I'm fully on board. I think if Vonleh stays (which he'd be crazy to do since we never pass to him) then you have to give Crean next year with Yogi, NV and JB2. It would be a really good team and, and he can compete with that team. There's never a good time, but you'd be forcing NV to leave and JB2 to ask for a release.

Tony Bennett was the first option.  I heard recently, don't know if it's true or not, that Crean wasn't an option at all until Izzo called the athletic department.

It's been 27 years since we won a title, yes, but we still saw more success in Bob Knight's last 10 years here than Tom Crean has seen in his 15 year head coaching career.

RMK's last 10 IU years:  2 conference titles, 4 Sweet 16s, 2 Elite 8s, 1 Final Four, assembled the 2002 team when he started recruiting again

Crean in 15 years:  2 conference titles, 3 Sweet 16s, 1 Elite 8, 1 Final Four

Mike Davis was a moron, and Samsung was a good in game coach that couldn't run a program.  One of those two actually has a career record very similar to Crean's.

I honestly don't know if you can compare Knight to any current coach.  It was an entirely different game back then.  Coaches like Knight wouldn't be able to handle the demanding schedule of recruiting now a days.  I have some GREAT recruiting stories about Knight that I'll have to share another day.

Great to see you here BGleas, always great to see some long time posters!

Wow. So this is where people went to.

Sign me up on the fire Tom Crean train. Sure, he might deserve more time based on last year, but I don't see things improving to the point where we are always a contender. No reason to prolong the misery. Get rid of him and try the next guy.

Why I am off the Crean train:

*poor x&o’s

*momentum killing substitutions

*does not learn from mistakes

Why I am not yet on the fire Crean train:

*he may not be the right guy anymore, but he still deserves our respect

*he is a good recruiter and runs a great program off the court

*why get fired up about something that isn’t going to happen anytime soon

Why it isn’t going to happen anytime soon:

*Glass is not going to fire Crean this year, nor next for that matter

*No other program is going to lure Crean away

*Crean is not going to resign

What I’m going to do about it:

*dream about what James, Noah and Yogi might accomplish next year

*not dream or scream about the unrealistic prospect of Stevens or Smart at IU next year

*admire what Coach Miller is doing with the Women’s team…2-3 years away from being special!

All of your dreams might be crushed if Noah packs up and leaves for the NBA
