TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

The thing that bugs me with his Canada incident is there is "getting upset" and "completely losing control".  Marshall looked to have completely lost it in that video.  As far as his coaching, I agree with you.  The guy wins.  The deciding factor is how much of a loose cannon is Marshall.  Is he a Class A d*ck or just a Class C?

If that is the only time he has done anything like that, that doesn't equate to how he normally is a coach. We all make mistakes. If he has done this before or sense, then it's a problem. IMO

I believe Tuesday was supposedly the day that IU and Donovan's agent had a meeting together, so they are saying that even though that meeting didn't completely go as planned (if it indeed happened), the Donovan camp is still interested.

Wait. Be kind rewind.

Not condoning Marshall's action, but have any of you read the background as to "why" he went off?  Or did you just watch the video?  Wasn't Wilson fired because of forcing players to play hurt?  Or humiliating them in the locker room?  And even more serious accusations?

As far as the Marshall moment of crazy, did any of you read this article about it?

Never, and still don't, believe the whole "timing" issue. If Billy D wants back into the college game, now is a great time to grab the IU job - where basketball is king. Fred will wait as long as he possibly can (without losing out on other top candidates) for Billy.

If the meeting happened, and we don't have much to confirm that, my question would be what kind of 'timing'?  As in he's only had 2 years in the NBA?  Not much we can do there.  As in he doesn't want to join the team until his season is finished?  Glass can get over it, because Donovan can assemble a staff and they can recruit until he joins the team.

If he wouldn't want to start assembling a staff until his season was finished, that would be trickier.

I'm not quite sure I'm buying the whole we had talks with BD thing.

Me neither Treesh.  If IU has already made the decision to part ways with Crean, keeping this ambiguous Donovan talk alive helps too many people.  1. It helps IU in their coaching search in general, by leveraging Donovan's "interest" in the job during negotiations with other potential candidates.  2. It gives the fan base the idea that Glass and his cohorts really shot for the moon this time, but couldn't get a commitment out of the notoriously wishy-washy Thunder Coach.  "The pull from our great program was really strong, but you know how Billy is, he just couldn't commit."  type thing.  3. It doesn't hurt these boards any in the short term.  Though, if all of this Donovan stuff is proven wrong (which is virtually impossible since no one is going to ask the Thunder coach next October if he was pursued by Indiana) it could hurt the credibility of the boards in the long run.

It seems like a low risk high reward thing to put out this 'information' on Donovan, even if there have only been a few quick phone calls between parties.

Well, which is it 0708? Is it a "no go" or a "still interest"? Somebody is covering their butt.

Wait. Be kind rewind.

There was talk on another site that there was supposed to be a meeting this week with IU and Donovan's representative, which led to a lot of people wondering how that would end up going if it indeed did happen. Then someone, can't remember who, posted that the meeting happened and that Donovan was a "no go". Today however, we saw a Mile from a different site say "0708 wanted to pass this along: "tho talks did not go well on Tuesday, there is still interest on the part of the Donovan camp."....so I mean there are different people who are debating on whether that meeting even existed to begin with, but if it indeed did, that is what was said about it.

I feel like there are 2 scenarios:

1. Glass put the feelers out to BD and his camp, maybe even met in person. Glass was told BD is indeed interested but is 100% focused on the OKC Thunder right now (after all, they're still in season and will be in the playoffs) and won't discuss further until their season is over. That's where this "timing" issue arose.

2. BD flat out said no, not ready to return to college just yet.

I'm hoping for #1

So saw a post on another site mention that, guys like Cal, Roy, Coach K, and Self all win at a high level, but they also do it with a team full of McD AA's.  They win despite their inefficiencies as a coach.   When you compare what Stevens did at Butler and what Marshall has done at WSU, one would see that those guys have coached their collective butts off to take lesser quality players, WSU has likely no future NBA guys on this years team and yet here Marshall is still just winning again.  4 out of last 5 seasons with 30 wins.  6 straight NCAA appearances.  Everyone likes to rail on him being in a lesser conference, hence it being easier.  Phoooey, that means 2-3 teams tops make it out of the MVC yearly.  Sometimes, just 1.  Where as the BIG can have a mediocre 7th placed team get in.  His teams dominate that conference.  They don't just win by 5 pts a lot of times.  They've got many games with 15-20 point wins.  If it's that easy to win, why aren't others dominating?   His age does not scare me.  He's 54.  By comparison Coach K is 70, Roy W is 66, and Jim Boeheim is 72.   He's got 10-15 years left in the tank minimum.  Go with Archie we might just be Crean 2.0.  Then we've wasted another 6 years+ to get there.  I'd rather go with the proven track record of solid D and team fundamentals over 1 year flash in the pan Elite 8 run any day.

I've never understood the "but he is a mid major coach" argument. Bob Knight was a mid major coach. As was Coach K and a few others. I shared an article a few days back which showed how many elite coaches came from mid majors or were assistance coaches. This doesn't mean we should go after just any mid major coach or not try to get one of these elite coaches.
We shouldn't go after mid major coaches like Groce or others who suddenly got hot in the NCAA Tournament for 1 yr. If we go after one , it should be ones like Marshall who has had long term success. IMO, the long term success can transfer to a school like IU.

We do not need a "top guy."  We do not need a name.   We do not need a guy who's got a pedigree.  We need a basketball coach who fits.  Who recruits kids with high basketball IQ instead of just kids with ball skills.  We need kids who will buy into defense (let's face it, Butler went to two straight title games under Brad Stevens because they were top 3 defensive teams both years.  The first season, no team scored more than 61 points against them ALL SEASON until Duke scored 62 in the final) and the communication that goes with it.  See: Ronald Nored, Kelsey Barlow.  Neither close to the athlete Blackmon or Newkirk are; but both understood positioning, hands in passing lanes, and simple effort.

We need kids who will make good decisions with the ball and value each possession.  We need kids who buy into what the coach says and not (like Blackmon) refuse to go into the huddle during a timeout.  We need a mix of kids who are good with the ball and kids who know how to play without it.  We need big men who have good post footwork and don't need to shoot 3's.

A coach who can get those things done, along with x's and o's and all the PR stuff will win at Indiana.  It does not have to be Billy Donovan.   I don't follow anything closely enough to tell you who that guy is, but Sampson and Crean were both "names" who had been to a recent final four and had "pedigree."  Indiana needs to get this hire right; not worry about whose name is on the list.

Sounds like Keatts.

we have two very good bigs on our team as in bryant and davis. a couple good three point shooters probably one of the best in college when hes open. all we have to do is feed the bigs inside and that opens up the 3 point line or set some screens/set plays to get james open. once they over guard the 3 point line then that opens up the dribble drive. its not that hard to understand....except for crean. he just wants/or lets his guys to dribble the ball around and throw up a prayer or drive and get blocked or turn the ball over. damn we need a change!
