The thing with Collins and Archie(who I'm extremely high on) is you don't hire them based on what they've done now, you hire them based on the potential they've shown. That's why Donovan is my number 1 but I don't think Collins would be a bad hire and I'd be ecstatic over Archie. Like JS though the risk of hiring on potential is that in a few years we have egg on our face for hiring them. We'll just have to wait and see.

I'd take Archie Miller over Collins.  For some reason I'm just not that high on Collins, though I do agree he's an improvement (low standard though).

Ok, so then why do you think that?

Don't give me age, looks or attitude as a reason for not wanting him because looks and attitude are the dumbest reasons for not wanting him.  Age within limits but he still has 10-15 years coaching (assuming his health is fine, I don't have stats to say it is or isn't but assuming its fine).  Donovan is only 2 years younger than Marshall.  The only thing unknown about Marshall is how he would do at a power conference school in the tourney but his past record shows success in Tourneys with "like" teams which lets be real, a power 5 school is a "like" team in the NCAA, not the mid major teams.  Just look a the past 32 winners and really I could keep going.  All of them from power conferences.

  1. Villanova
  2. Duke
  3. Uconn
  4. Louisville
  5. Kentucky
  6. Uconn
  7. Duke
  8. UNC
  9. Kansas
  10. Florida
  11. Florida
  12. UNC
  13. UConn
  14. Syracuse
  15. Maryland
  16. Duke
  17. Michigan State
  18. Uconn
  19. Kentucky
  20. Arizona
  21. Kentucky
  22. UCLA
  23. Arkansas
  24. UNC
  25. Duke
  26. Duke
  27. UNLV
  28. Michigan
  29. Kansas
  30. Indiana
  31. Louisvlle
  32. Villanova

That's a fair question, and I really don't have any stats or numbers to back up my opinion. It's just my opinion.  Maybe it's just my bias because I want a bigger "name".  For all I know, Marshall could get hired and do great at IU.

I agree with you on the age and looks part, but if attitude is a question mark, then that should be closely looked at.

I dunno... slap some cymbals in his hands, and you've got some instant entertainment (even has the Candy Stripes!):

Put a suit on the monkey with a blue checkered shirt and you would have Crean.

CTC has been criticized for his inability recruit this area effectively, and rightfully so. But I don't think we are ever going back to the days when an IU coach will "lockdown" the state. AAU gives kids too much national exposure for that to happen. What we should expect is  coach who can hold his own and get his share.

The problem is that coaching, while extremely important, isn't the whole battle. You have to have a plan for how you are going to build the program. Aside from Crean's on court decisions, I think his helter skelter approach in this aspect has really done him in. The constant oversigning and offering 15 kids for 3 schollys just looked like he really had no plan at all. He may have been a great ambassador for the program, but it really seemed that he had no clue on how to sustain success. This is where we have to depend on Glass in the interview process, which is a bit concerning...

And that's a fair answer. I just don't get the hate for Marshall and want to understand why, when he has been as successful if not more successful than other names mentioned.

And don't get me wrong, I respect that that it is your opinion. I mean after all if no one had opinions this would be a boring world.

Opinions though are formed based on something and I just ask that every one keep their opinions open and watch these guys coach and see if that's what you want to see at IU. If it is great and say that's why. We may not always agree on the style of play and that's fine. But if your unsure why, then give them another chance to form that opinion.

Just like when I watched Shaka at VCU, I knew I didn't want him because his success is Gimmick related.

I watched Archie and his teams style of play reminds me of Crean with defense and I don't prefer that style. He runs the stupid weave/ dribble drive crap that Crean runs which I hate. I would still take him over Crean based on the defense alone, but again not over other names. There is more risk and not sure there is more reward over the other names.

I have watched Marshall and I do like his teams style of play. Combine that with his history and stats and that's where I'm at.

Having said all that give me Donovan and put all this to rest! I think we can mostly all agree with that.

Count me in on the young coach train. If we can't get Donovan or Bennett then I want youth. We would get 10-15 years out of guys like Archie Miller or Chris Collins before they're the same age as Marshall is right now. Both of them played high-level college basketball so they have that feel for the game that someone like Crean lacks.

That is fair, and maybe attitude was the complete wrong word to use, but the attitude I was talking about is his demeanor on the court.  I don't care if he is a little intense on the sideline at the refs or his team, we need more of that in my opinion.  What we don't need is over clapping, coddling, and whining and I don't see any of that with Marshall.  Now before I get blasted about whining, I am talking about the Izzo, Webber, Groce (even Thomas Bryant), etc, type of whining.  I am not referring to arguing obvious calls and talking with officials when your team is getting screwed because the officials are terrible these days and seem to be getting worse.  But Izzo, Webber and Groce seem to whine about every single call that doesn't go their way and I have not seen this from Marshall.

Speaking in terms of how you took what I meant as attitude, yes, obviously he needs to treat people respectfully and needs to represent the University in a respectful way.  I haven't heard of any issues involving him and off the court issues.  And the school where he is at, seems pretty happy with him and wants to keep him (great salary for a small school) so I don't see any glaring issues there.

That's kind of where I'm at with Archie,  Collins, and Marshall.  I like the possibility of Archie but worry about his style being to close to Creans. His offense is scary similar.. I like Collins and Marshall on the X and Os, but Collins has little head coaching experience and Marshall creeps me out a little.

Honestly though any of the three may do a great job here.

Pretty sure the people behind Crimson Quarry are known Crean fans. I wouldn't read much into that
