TOM CREAN FIRED

Greg Marshall looks too much like Crean for me. That's probably the worst reason not to want a coach, but oh well. I would prefer Holtmann over him tbh.

Having him here in the Valley the last however many years, I'm just not sold on the dude.

If Billy did come, it wouldn't be till after the Thunder's season is over, right? I don't wanna wait that long!!!!!!!

He could still announce he's coming here after his season is over and start putting his staff together and they can recruit for him till he's done.

Stephanie White announced mid season when she left the Indiana Fever for the Vanderbilt job.

I think people underestimate how difficult the tournament can be to win a title. You need to have great players, great coaching, great chemistry, all clicking at the right time. There's no recipe to throw together and out pops a title. What I want is consistency. If you are consistently making the tournament and winning some games you out yourself in a position to make that title run. I tank that's what we all want. Obviously the number one goal is a title, but it's much more difficult to win one when you're not consistent. I don't know if it's fair, for lack of a better term, to pass on a coach just because they didn't win it all.

I love the back and forth this board brings, everyone brings valid points to both sides of the topic. I found it interesting to blindly look at some tourney finishes of some coaches for the last 5 seasons and then look who they belonged to. There's always more to the story than just the finish. Apologize ahead of time for the long post. But here's an example:

Coach A:
15/16 - Rd 32
14/15 - S16
13/14 - Rd 32
12/13 - FF
11/12 - Rd 64

Coach B:
15/16 - Rd 64
14/15 - S16
13/14 - NIT
12/13 - None
11/12 - Rd 32

Coach C:
15/16 - S16
14/15 - E8
13/14 - Rd 32
12/13 - Rd 32
11/12 - Rd 32

Coach D:
15/16 - Rd 64
14/15 - E8
13/14 - E8
12/13 - S16
11/12 NIT

Coach E:
15/16 - Rd 64
14/15 - FF
13/14 - E8
12/13 - S16
11/12 - S16

Coach F:
15/16 - S16
14/15 - Champ
13/14 - Rd 64
12/13 - E8
11/12 - Rd 64

Coach G:
15/16 - S16
14/15 - Rd 64
13/14 - None
12/13 - S16
11/12 - S16

Coach H:
15/16 - Runner Up
14/15 - S16
13/14 - Rd 32
12/13 - Rd 32
11/12 - E8

Coach I:
15/16 - Rd 64
14/15 - Rd 32
13/14 - E8
12/13 - none
11/12 NIT

Coach A - Marshall
Coach B - Bob Huggins
Coach C - Mark Few
Coach D - Sean Miller
Coach E - Izzo
Coach F - Coach K
Coach G - Crean
Coach H - Roy Williams
Coach I - Archie Miller

Now that I've typed all that out I don't really know what my point was but I didn't want to delete it. Obviously we all have our opinions as to why these coaches did or didn't do better this year or the next. Sorry for the long post, I'll retire for a couple days.

lol I literally just did that on the post comparing salary to tourney success. Typed it out, had no point and then posted it anyway lol.

Everyone's thoughts on Quin Snyder and what he has done with the Utah Jazz.......know he was fired by Mizzou, but that when they were still in the Big 12.

I like him quite a bit. If they end up going with a younger, less experienced coach, then I wouldn't be opposed. But he definitely wouldn't be my first choice.

I like him as well!! I dont think he will mind if we dont reach out. He will end up at Duke as long as he keeps winning. Daddy is the AD. He is a very good coach too. Lost Egbunu and is still humming along when every media guy said UK has the SEC in the bag. I would like to see him a few more years but I can tell by watching them he will be a really good one.

Nicely said. I agree with everything. We can talk about the competition and it is a factor to throw out but we have no real clue of what each would do. I think Marshall is a step above Crean I honestly just dont know how much, but at this point a new face is a breath of fresh air regardless and I would not mind Marshall one bit. Personally I would just make a couple calls before him. For some reason I think he goes to Illinois. Not over us but I can see it opening before and him taking it not knowing our situation if it even came down to it. Who knows neither may not even be candidates for the administration. Funnest part about it is not knowing and having convos about this guy and that guy.

I hear ya definitely the funniest part. Also the most exiting IMO. I'm really looking forward to seeing how our "coaching candidates" do in the tournament. Especially Holtmann, who's just hitting his stride with Butler. I currently have Holtmann as my #3 behind Marshall and Miller. However, if Holtmann gets Butler to the Sweet 16 or further, I think he deserves to be our #1. Such a run would not be a fluke. It would follow the path of progression Holtmann has shown the past couple seasons. That team has been awesome this season.

Collins, Marshall, Miller, Wojo, Holtmann, Prohm... lets see if any of these guys can put an exclamation point on their résumé!

I dont like Holtman honestly not sure why I just think he is the Greg Marshall type. Stays where he is comfortable for awhile and rack up the wins. Just dont see him at a big time school. Probably wrong though. Your list is a lot of guys who are interesting. I have my own list of coaches I like not necessarily for IU but some. I want to see how Chris Beard if they make it, Andy Enfield, Chris Mack, Ed Cooley just cause I like him plus Holt but never want him here, Mike White who is a star on the rise and Tim Jankovich do. I see most of them becoming big names. I am also excited to see Collins but just like Beard nothing is really expected out of schools like their at so I wont take the tourney as their bad coaches of they fall flat. Beard has some work to do to make it but I wanna see him in the NIT too. I think they could win it.

He has been at Butler only a few years. Was at Gardner Webb before that. His overall record isn't great. At Butler he is a .700 coach. Gardner Webb was a struggle. He improved in his third year and became a Butler Assistant. I like his X and O game, but really want to see him make a run in the tournament.

I'm not thrilled about all the guys on my list. But they are all there because they are younger, with a good résumé, and have built their programs to either make their first serious runs this March, or make a run which serves as evidence to their body of work. Each I could see as being a fit for IU.

I like Beard but I consider him a unique case given RMK. Beard isn't coming to IU because of RMK and I don't think he's quite there yet, regardless. Cooley is a Providence native and I don't think he's done enough yet.

Enfield is another guy I should add to my list. The guy is a winner and he's built that USC team. Can he make a big step in the PAC 12 and NCAA tournaments? If so, that would prove as justification of his third year building the program and he should be considered. Jankovich is another winner. Weak conference and he's older, but I'm interested to see what he can do in the tournament. He has very strong assistant coaching experience. I hope SMU matches up against Cincy in the AAC conference finals. Jankovich might end up being a legitimate candidate for Mizzou or LSU.

I don't care for Mack at all. Xavier has been a huge disappointment. Hopefully Butler dashes their tournament hopes this Sunday. Don't see a reason why IU would ever take Mack over Holtmann. L'Ville or UK maybe, but Mack shouldn't be a fit for us.
