OK IU fans - what was CTC's epiphany, his serendipity moment, his paradigm shift?  He is a changed man from his sideline appearance and actions, to his game management, to his team practice management.  What caused it?  Who caused it?

Definitely the fans' booing this year. Good job everyone!

A set of sore hands mid season, he had to take a break from clapping and really think about what this team could do.

Blackmon got hurt, and he needed to make a couple of changes.

1)  Shorter, lighter practices to protect the health of his team.    Minimizing risk for injury and also limiting tired legs.  Shorter bench means need fresher legs.

2)  Defense becomes a focus.  Losing a shooter (at the time) means we can't as easily out-score people.  Forced a little different style.

And if he hasn't seen the obvious and absolute positive affects, he's a complete blind moron.

Honest question? Do u guys think the Blackmon injury helped us? Sadly I think it did. I hope the kid comes back next year but he did not care about defense at all. I mean it was awful ( am I wrong here?). It's very hard to play team defense when u have to shift to cover Blackmons man. I hope he learns some valuable lessons and picks up his defensive game next year.

Notice how he hasn't worn a tie all season. I think he used to tie his ties too tight and it was preventing much needed oxygen from getting to his brain so he could coach clearly! /s

Seriously though, I think it was a mixture of feeling his seat get hot and the JBJ injury. I think he started the season knowing that he had to change something but couldn't figure out what, then Blackmon got hurt it sort of clicked. He's been more laid back, lets them rest more, made smarter decisions. It feels like he's thinking smart, not over thinking or letting emotions control his decisions.

Related, I think watching this season from the side can help JBJ too. He's seeing this improved defense and how it helps push our offense to a higher level. I know he's lived his whole life around the game and should already know that defense is important, but this could be the different perspective that he needs for it to finally crystalize in his brain. I have no proof/news/insight or anything, just my hope/thought.

I think it was when he hired the strength coach to be the head cheerleader during games.  It meant he was able to spend less time yelling and clapping, and more time on managing the game.  Note:  THIS IS ENTIRELY TOUNGE IN CHEEK!  but I really don't like the antics of the strength guy.

I actually think there might be a little something to this.  I'm not saying it's the reason he's been coaching better but he seems to balance Crean out.  Crean seems to be a coach that can wind his players up pretty tight but the S/C coach seems like he is always pumped, minus being sick @Ill.  He looks like the guy to back Crean in what he says while also making sure the team is pumped up and loose.

you never watched jbj in high school did you? His dad let them just run offense however they felt and no defense to be seen. He just tried to out score the other team and no discipline at all

I don't think there's any question.

I like Tom the man, Tom the coach leaves a little to be desired. This may be his best performance as a coach, evaluating the beginning of the season through the B1G schedule. However, if he can't get into the field of 8 this year, I believe it is time to try someone new. I expect IU to compete for the B1G title every year so while it was a nice accomplishment, it does not define a great year at IU. He has to be able to build teams that can compete late into the NCAA and S16s are nothing to brag about at IU. We want the goods.

I think the real problem is both him and Troy together. You can scheme around 1 defensive liability but not 2

That's a pretty astute observation.  Never thought of it that way, but it makes some sense.   Although I think Troy, in spurts, is very capable.  He did well in stretches against Uthoff last night.
