Fire Coach Woodson Thread
SamIam and 17 others reacted to BGleas for a post in a topic
I think whether Woodson deserves another year is irrelevant. I think he probably does "deserve it", but that's not the question the AD should be asking. I think most agree a roster overhaul, to a certain degree, is needed or at least happening this offseason. Many others feel like a system overhaul is needed as well. The only question that matters is if the powers that be think Mike Woodson is the guy to successfully oversee and execute those overhauls. If you think he is then you give him one more year that he may "deserve". If you don't think he is the guy for that then you have to make the move this offseason. I personally don't think he is the guy and now is the time. -

If IU was actually serious, making the tourney would be absolute bare minimum expectations and the play in game would be a disappointment; it definitely wouldn't warrant a raise. Instead it's viewed as a big accomplishment and gets a pay raise. I'll say it again, take away the name Mike Woodson and not a single person would like this hire. -

I've seen a lot of "we can't fire Woody in year 3 because you can't just keep firing coaching every 3 years... Where's the stability"..... Stability comes from having built a strong foundation in the program. A program with a strong foundation can plug a new coach like Kevin Ollie and he can win a National Championship, fire him, and a new coach comes in and wins another national championship. Same with UNC. How do you build a strong foundation without a practice schedule? Tom Crean could have coached at IU for 40 years and regardless of when he leaves its a "total rebuild" for the next coach. When Archie was hired he had to rebuild the way IU schedules and budgets for non-conference games. That's just 1 of 100's of things that are the makeup of a program. We have cracks in the foundation of the program as a whole, we're a losing program/business and it permeates every aspect at which we operate. Thats why its always a rebuild for indiana, we haven't had a coach to make the necessary program changes or an AD to hold anyone accountable for foundational stability. Do we expect mike woodson to care about the smallest details and take full ownership and build out a program and then communicate his vision on what he's changing to the fanbase? No. We need a coach who wants total control and ownership of the program and runs it like the CEO. Whatever coach can come in point out what we're doing wrong and be a control freak to fix it and build a solid foundation is the one I want. -

I respectfully disagree. Cupps is the prototypical 4 year, don't do much for 2 years, Wisconsin type of player that many claim they want in order to build a foundation. In a perfect world X would have somehow consistently been the X of his 7-8 game run during one solitary season, while we would have also added quality portal guards that dictated Cupps only playing 5 minutes a game this year. He is a freshman, that was not slated to be an instant star, that is a victim of the roster construction. -

You should have "added pieces" last summer when you had a chance to save your job, coach. -

I'm an old fan who has seen three nattys, and I can tell you -- this post royally pisses me off. Blaming older fans for the shape the program is in now? You don't have the slightest f--king clue what "old fans" think. Who the hell do you think you are? -

In my gazillion decades of watching college basketball I’ve never seen a player taken care of by the officials like Edey. He bodies someone or hits them on the arm… no problem. Anyone bodies Edey? Immediate foul. -

Ok, watched the end of the UCLA @ Cal game... and in the post game show, they showed highlights of Washington State @ Oregon ... for the sake of everything holy in basketball, can we make Oregon's entry into the B1G conditional on getting rid of that gawd-awful basketball floor? Not only is it incredibly ugly, it's darn near impossible to see the court markings with all of that crap painted on the floor. -

Yeah double digit losses stink but all of this snowballs from bad decisions before the season even started. Sometimes a program just has a bad year all around in every aspect. As you said it’s irrelevant if he deserves it or not if they think he can fix it he is going to be here next year regardless if I or others feel he should or shouldn’t be here. Painter in year 8 at Purdue went 16-18(8-10) with a 37 point home loss to IU and a 28 point loss at the Hall. Lost to Bucknell and Eastern Michigan. 10 double digit losses in the season. Even good college coaches have bad years -

Because IU is low hanging fruit right now and they can say half truths without doing any research on the matter. Archie was recruiting Smith and if he hadn’t gotten fired I’m guessing he would be a Hoosier. But he did get fired. Smith committed to purdue in April 29th of 2021 Woodson was hired March 29 of 2021 https://www.insidethehall.com/2020/07/01/hes-grown-up-quickly-how-braden-smith-is-changing-the-culture-of-westfield-high-school-basketball/ the narrative IU and Woodson passed on Smith is lazy but easy to spin. IU was recruiting him they just happened to fire the staff that was recruiting him -

With our history, we'll add 6 front-court players. Probably run a 5 center line-up -

Think I just discovered the problem. There's more than one hump ... -
6 pointsCupps had a wide open corner 3 but instead dribbled into the middle of the court and shot an 18 foot 2, which he missed, while drifting to his left side. I don’t get it.

Guys, sure Woodson is showing why he hadn't been a head coach in 10 years but if we fire a coach no one else wanted to begin with we'll look like a bunch of meanies. That's more important obviously. -

It’s not that hard, is it? Every year, make a list of the top 5 players in IN, IL, OH. Goal to get 2-3 commits from that group. Supplement with a kid or two from the national scene. If you can’t recruit your neighborhood, what makes you think you can recruit the nation? How about the announcers trolling IU for not offering smith. -

I think he’ll want to keep Malik as the #1 option next season, which isn’t good. Liam may help but not all freshman are impact players. You can see how raw McKenzie still is. The NIL money will have to seriously talk if Indiana wants to upgrade because it won’t be the coaches that get kids to join this dumpster fire. -

IU hired a guy who had no business getting the job but the administration (and a portion of the fanbase) will gaslight us into thinking we’re the problem. Mike Woodson 100% needs to go. Embarrassments like tonight do so much more damage to the program than firing a crappy coach “too soon” ever could do. -
